iCarrier iPod Tower 06/22/2005 01:57 AM

icarrier.jpgThe iPod is a very special thing. It deserves a massive set of speakers with sub-woofer and remote and you shouldn't, quite obviously just hook your iPod up to your stereo receiver and maybe get one of those less expansive iPod remote control things. Therefore, we will say very little about the iCarrier and let you all just bask in its phallic glory.

King's new Dark Tower novel

King's new Dark Tower novel 06/19/2004 01:25 AM
Today I finished Song of Susannah, the next-to-last volume in Stephen King's Dark Tower series, books that King started as a teenager and that he claims will end his career -- he's vowed that the final volume in the series will also be his last book.

I believe him. He's doing the thing that Asimov and Heinlein did at the ends of their careers, tying in the loose ends of all his old work and name-checking and referencing all the writers who influenced him.

But unlike bad end-of-career novels like Heinlein's Cat Who Walks Through Walls, Song of Susannah is a sharp and tight book, a comparatively slim book of only 400 or so pages. I raced through it in just a couple sittings, devouring the yarn at speed and wanting at once for it to be over and for it never to end.

For King's Dark Tower quest is an astonishing series of novels, rich and wide and deep, drunk on prose and on the best characterization of King's creer. There's plenty King's written that I haven't cared for, but I'd crawl on glass to get my hands on the final installment of the series.

This volume in the story is about itself as much as it is about the characters and their quest. King's theories on writing are very sound, and this story is as much about how we read and understand and use stories as it is a story in and of itself.

But it's never preachy and it's never dull. King's story, which has all the hallmarks of cliche, manages to be both startingly original and utterly sane and crazy. Link

Tec USB Speaker Tower, Cube

Tec USB Speaker Tower, Cube 03/29/2005 04:22 AM

usb_tower.jpg imageA Japanese company called Tec has introduced a number of interesting products, and the first two we'll be covering are the "USB Speaker Tower W" and "USB Speaker Cube W." The former is a spiffy looking USB speaker/tower thingy with — get ready — integrated light. Something like this would look quite nice on a desk, presuming it actually puts out enough light.

The "USB Speaker Cube W" is a cube-shaped USB speaker (not subwoofer) with an integrated 4-port USB hub. On the front of the unit are various dials and buttons for controlling volume, bass and treble.

Tec's USB Speaker Tower W will run 4,500 yen, and Speaker Cube 6,825 yen.

Just Put A Cellular Tower In The Plane

Just Put A Cellular Tower In The Plane 04/21/2004 03:53 PM
In something of a followup to a post from a few weeks ago, Guy Kewney is going through every reason given for banning mobile phones on planes and explaining why it doesn't have to be true. The real issue isn't one of danger (as has been pointed out many times before), but that each phone would be contacting so many cellular towers on the ground it would cause problems for the carriers. The simple solution (mentioned in that earlier article) is to place a modified mobile cellular tower on the plane that directs all communication down in a more appropriate manner. Having found such a local tower, the phones won't broadcast out to all the other towers on the ground. Still, some are worried about the danger issue, and Kewney systematically points out why all their arguments don't make sense. Of course, none of this addresses the annoy ance issue - but perhaps we'll have airlines that advertise "no phoning" planes or zones and we'll basically be back to where we are now.

Chicago's Sears Tower to Go Wireless

Chicago's Sears Tower to Go Wireless 01/22/2004 02:13 AM
InnerWireless plans to support wireless access throughout the Sears Tower, even in the elevators: The company will build a network that will offer Wi-Fi networks or cellular networks throughout tenant offices if they want it. But it must first make deals with the cellular operators to extend their coverage in the building. InnerWireless sounds a lot like RadioFrame, a Craig McCaw company that's been around for ages. RadioFrame sells a box that can be deployed in offices that users can essentially slide radios for any kind of network into. The platform can offer Wi-Fi and cellular coverage from a single device. A few years back the Sears Tower was having trouble keeping full of tenants. This may be one effort to draw tenants in. It seems that more office buildings are making themselves Wi-Fi-ready, which may be a major selling point for companies that don't have the IT staff to build their own wireless networks. Also, in this case, cellular coverage in the elevators is probably a bonus because the building is so huge it probably takes forever to get in and out of....

Tokyo's Nakagin capsule tower

Tokyo's Nakagin capsule tower 12/22/2004 01:30 AM
Xeni Jardin: BoingBoing reader Juergen says,
In Japan we don't only have capsule hotels. No -- we also have capsule buildings. At the outskirts of the posh Ginza district stands the now almost forgotten Nakagin Capsule Tower, the world's first capsule architecture built for actual use.

Built from 1970 and opened in 1972 the Nakagin Capsule Tower was a innovative masterpiece by architect Kisho Kurokawa. Kurokawa developed the technology to install the 2.3m x 3.8m x 2.1m sized capsule units into a concrete core with only 4 high-tension bolts, making the units detachable and replaceable. The capsules were designed to accommodate the individual as either an apartment or studio space, and by connecting units they could also accommodate a family. Complete with appliances and furniture, from audio system to telephone, the capsule interior was pre-assembled in a factory off-site and then hoisted by crane and fastened to the concrete core shaft. Today the Nakagin Capsule Tower is in rather bad condition and most capsules are rented out as mini-offices for a monthly fee of about 70,000yen each.
