Waiters Use Customer's Card While He's
Still In The Restaurant
06/11/2004 12:55 PMThere have been plenty of stories about waiters stealing credit card
numbers with skimmer devices, but over in Shanghai, a pair of waiters
couldn't even go through that much trouble. After picking up one
diner's credit card, they immediately went next door and
orde
red $3,000 worth of mobile phones. This set off a bit of a
well-placed alarm with the credit card company - who called him up to
verify the purchase. The waiters were quickly arrested. The article
has the understatement of the week: "The pair never intended to be
waiters for long." No! Really?

Wi-Fi Card for Smart Phones
12/05/2003 01:54 PM SyChip is coming out with software that will support its WLAN card in
smart phones: The capability will let smart phone users access data
services over the WLAN and make voice calls using voice over the WLAN.
Initially, customers will have to download drivers to the smart phones
but analysts say that eventually the capability should be built into
the phone. Analysts are also concerned about the battery life on smart
phones that are using WLANs....

Wireless Touchscreens Cut Waiters
02/10/2004 02:40 AMEugene, Oregon, restauranteur invests $15,000 in wireless ordering
system to cut jobs: It's a sad reality, but as this fellow notes, his
biggest cost is labor, and a touchscreen wireless ordering system
reduces errors, increases table turns, and improves an individual
waitron's efficiency, thus allowing the owner to ultimately have fewer
staff....

03/31/2005 08:57 AMThe ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason
for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by
Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of
its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell

citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are

03/06/2004 01:57 AM
Every couple of years Microsoft wraps a marketing label around all the
major initiatives in the company. In 2000, the label was .NET; in
2003, Longhorn. As developers and IT managers ponder what the
"Longhorn wave" might mean to them, InfoWorld decided to assess the
current .NET wave. Its goals were many and ambitious. At the core of
.NET, the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and its associated Framework
(class library) would usher Microsoft developers into the world of
managed code, whose benefits were already well-known to their Java
counterparts. In parallel, Web services would become the pivotal
integration technology, and XML the lingua franca of data
representation. These were, and still are, the central themes. Don
Box, architect of Longhorn's Indigo communication subsystem, put it
plainly on his weblog: "We're betting that the future is managed code
and XML." [Full story at InfoWorld.com

This story, which began
thirty weblog items ago, is (at least for me) a compelling
demonstration of weblog/journalism synergy. I first tried this
approach in 1996, for a
BYTE cover
story. In the pre-blog era, NNTP newsgroups were the venue, but
it's the same principle. When you're dealing with an evergreen topic,
and you're not worried about getting scooped by the competition, why
not go ahead and outline your ideas in advance? The ensuing
conversation will clarify them, and put you in touch with people who
can share interest and expertise that you otherwise wouldn't have been
able to find.

04/03/2005 07:49 PMAbu Ghraib. Al Qaeda is
now
officially in Iraq. This is classic Al Qaeda:
Gua
rdian. The attack started at 7pm when a car bomb rammed
one corner of the complex, followed by rocket-propelled grenades,
mortars and small-arms fire. It appeared to be a feint because when
guards scrambled to respond a second car bomb blew up at an opposite
corner, again followed by a hail of bullets and bombs.
Let's hope that they don't attempt an assault like this on major
infrastructure. The damage to high value equipment (special high
capacity turbines and pumps) would be catastrophic.
