“Does prize money make for good technology policy?…The idea of prize money as sound space policy received a surprising boost from Washington a few weeks ago when the President’s Commission on Implementation of U.S. Space Exploration Policy officially endorsed the idea. In a 60-page report, the panel made weighty recommendations that included an internal overhaul of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as well as the privatization of much of NASA’s unmanned space program. And,…

Build your own X-Prize Rocket!

Build your own X-Prize Rocket! 05/17/2004 07:27 PM
BoingBoing reader Stefan Jones says,
Model rocket supplier Estes Industries got hammered by the failure of a line of licensed "The Phantom Menace" models. They're starting to appeal to those of us who geek out on real-life rockets again, with eight models based on entries in the X-Prize suborbital rocket competition. The variety of approaches is astonishing. The second page has a mystery model that's obviously Rutan's Spaceship One. I guess some people charge more for licensing than others . . . And -- whoo! -- they're selling a video camera rocket to replace the 8mm Cineroc movie camera that was last offered thirty years ago.

FAA Considering License Approval For X
Prize Entrants
02/10/2004 02:46 PM
The Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing proposals on whether or not to gran t licenses to two contestants for the X Prize, that would let them see if they can shoot themselves into space. The X Prize is the privately funded contest encouraging anyone to build a rocket that can successfully take people up to the edge of space (at least twice). Whoever gets there first gets $10 million. However, in order to launch something like that, FAA approval is needed. The group behind the prize expects that the licenses will be granted and the first flights will take place before the end of this year. Hopefully, the contestants will win the X Prize and not a Darwin Award.
