Nurses Bidding On Their Work Schedule,
Hourly Pay Rate
Nurses Bidding On Their Work Schedule,
Hourly Pay Rate
12/08/2003 04:53 PMWhen I was in business school we had a convoluted computerized bidding
process (on a Vax) to get into various classes. Now, with the success
of eBay, it seems that everything is becoming auctionable. A hospital
in upstate NY is using
an online bidding process to fill open schedule spots for
nurses. The nurses get to log in, see what timeslots are open,
and bid how much they'd want to work those hours. If they match the
necessary qualifications the lowest bidder wins. The nurses find that
they can make more money than their standard wages (or augment their
standard wages) by picking less desirable times to work (which
sometimes are more convenient for them). The hospitals save money by
not having to hire outside nurses (at much higher rates) to fill open
timeslots.

Towards Work
Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much
Towards Work
11/14/2003 02:51 PMOne of the downsides to the fact that people
can
work whenever they want is that it's sometimes hard for people to
stop working. According to a study done in Europe, many overly
stressed out workers are
asking their bosses to
cut their hours and salary just to gain back some control over
their lives. Meanwhile, many bosses in IT are increasingly worried
that their staff is going to burn out. Of course, a lot of that could
be solved if companies hired more people, but they still seem hesitant
to do so.

Wi-Fi Threatens Cell Market
Wi-Fi Threatens Cell Market
02/16/2004 02:49 PMThis is a thorough Wall Street Journal article that aptly describes
how Wi-Fi is affecting the cellular market: The crowded cellular
market already has plenty of pressure but Wi-Fi poses a threat from a
voice and data competition perspective. The article cites Dartmouth
College, which has offered students Wi-Fi phones, eliminating the need
for students to use cell phones on campus. Hotspots are also
threatening cellular operators' plans for delivering wireless data
services. Apparently Nextel has confirmed that it is interested in
dual-mode phones that would operate on cellular and Wi-Fi networks.
I'll be very interested to watch how cellular operators approach the
idea as I still think it will be difficult for them to rationalize
handing off calls onto Wi-Fi networks that they don't own....

Recovery
Recovery
03/22/2005 04:26 PMA
year ago I was sidelined by a pinched nerve, which resulted in surge
ry and a long
recuperation. Today I celebrated my recovery by running my first
half-marathon.
Now, I wish I could report that I ran at a record pace, but the
truth is that I ran veerrry slowly. At about the fifth mile I started
having trouble with my ili
otibial band, and no amount of stretching seemed to help. So
rather than run a speedy race, I slowed to a 10-minute-mile pace and
spent much of the run watching people twice as old - and twice as wide
- pass me by. Still, given that a year ago I was down for the count
after neck surgery, I feel pretty good that I finished at all.
I feel even better about the fact that my kids were there to see me
finish. Last year, I hated them seeing me wearing a neck brace,
unable to turn my head or even pick them up. This year, as I crossed
the finish line I spotted my kids holding hand-made "Go Dady" signs,
and I can't describe how great that made me feel. The only thing
better than that was lifting myself into the stands to give my wife a
well-deserved (and very salty) kiss.
PS: A special thanks to my best friends Kevin and Shima, who made
sure my favorite beer was waiting for me outside the event. Nice one,
folks :)
