Java Supplements is a free library of utility classes which extends and enhances the functionality of the classes provided by the normal Java API. It provides robust and reliable code for doing many of the tasks which Java developers commonly find themselves writing code for again and again, such as catching InterruptedExceptions on Thread.sleep() calls or reading files into a byte array.
Changes:
This release cleans up a lot of the code and fully maven-izes the build process. It also adds new functionality for manipulating strings, files, and objects.

As search aficionados, we have watched recent changes in the search industry with great interest. Yahoo! launched its own search algorithm in February 2004. MSN previewed its proprietary search algorithm in July 2004, and is expected to roll it out soon. That will give Internet searchers a choice of four different major search algorithms (Ask Jeeves, Google, MSN, and Yahoo). It also made us wonder: how different are the search engines, and is one any better than the others? They created jux2 as a comparative research tool to answer these questions. Using jux2, theylearned that search engines are more different than people think, typically sharing fewer than 3.5 of their top 10 results (see the other statistical data). They also found that a comparative tool like jux2 gives users far more control over their searches and, in many cases, better search results than from any single search engine. Their hope is that the community of advanced search users finds jux2 an interesting and useful tool. This has been added to the search engine section of Internet MiniGuides 2004-05.

The file-search tool in Windows XP is a dog, and not just metaphorically -- a little animated puppy appears on screen to indicate your query's status by wagging its tail, panting, scratching itself and other actions. If only Microsoft's programmers had put such effort into the rest of this software! Its searches run painfully slowly and routinely yield masses of unrelated files. A gaggle of contenders has recently put forth replacements for Microsoft's search. Some are popular Web portals -- Ask Jeeves, Google and Yahoo. Some are small, obscure developers -- Copernic and Blinkx. One's a division of Microsoft itself, its MSN Internet service.

New Tool To Pull Out Paid Search Results

New Tool To Pull Out Paid Search Results 11/17/2003 02:06 AM
Now that pop-up and banner ad blocking software is becoming more common, the makers of such products are turning their efforts to other sneaky advertising tricks. InterMute, makers of AdSubtract, are launching a product that will try to remove paid inclusion search results that have been coming under increas ing scrutiny lately. It's a little unclear from the article exactly how the search removal program will work. It might just be designed to work with sites (like Google) where the paid text ads are obvious - but it suggests that it will try to pick them out of other search engines where the paid inclusions are mixed right in with the unpaid. Of course, I wonder how big a market there is for such technology? While the more tech savvy folks may know about paid inclusions, most people don't. Furthermore, they're not intrusive - which is what is most annoying about pop-ups and spam. People are willing to pay to get rid of intrusive advertising, but I'm not sure they're willing to pay to get rid of subtle advertising.

Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have developed a "first-of-its-kind" document retrieval system that is able to "memorize" keywords in handwritten manuscripts. Computer scientist R. Manmatha says, "Right now, searching a scanned handwritten document is very hard to do. Scanned historical documents are basically images, or pictures, and currently can only be searched if someone manually transcribes the documents or creates an index of their contents. This is time consuming and expensive to do. Given the cost, most handwritten documents are never transcribed or indexed. But there is an enormous amount of handwritten, historical material." Manmatha and his associates have created a demonstration of their search tool using 1,000 pages of George Washington's papers, which can be searched by typing in a common keyword such as "Virginia." According to research assistant Toni Rath, "The basic idea is analogous to searching text documents in one language, say French, using queries in another language, say English. This is usually done by learning models from documents written in both languages. By analogy, our system learns from a parallel body of transcribed scanned images. That is, the word images form a 'visual language' and the transcriptions are in English."

OS X
06/30/2004 05:33 PM
Groxis Inc. announced on Wednesday that Grokker 2.1, the company's visual search tool, is now compatible with Mac OS X. The software was previously available as a Beta release for the operating system. Grokker uses its four plug-ins -- The Web (covering the AltaVista, MSN, WiseNut, Yahoo! and Teoma search engines), Amazon.com, Google and My Files -- to produce visual maps of the data you're looking for, whether it's on the Internet or on your hard drive. It features a fully functional Web browser and allows you to build, edit and save visual maps containing up to 2,000 items in each. Version 2.1 builds maps faster, adds the Google plug-in, highlights query keywords in different colors and more. It requires Mac OS X v10.2.2, a G3 processor, 256MB RAM, 20MB free hard drive space, Java 1.4.1 and Safari 1.0. A 30-day trial is available from the Groxis Web site, and a license is US$49.
