Infineon found guilty

Infineon found guilty 09/15/2004 07:29 PM
RAM maker Infineon have been fined $160 million dollars by the US anti-trust department for illegally fixing prices between 1999 and 2002. Infineon pled guilty, and will be paying the fine off in segments until 2009.

An Infineon rep told The Register that they had changed their ways; they'd only done this to certain OEM customers and they have "already been in contact with these customers and has achieved or is in the process of achieving settlements with all of these OEM customers."

PC makers like Dell has long raised the issue of the major RAM makers illegally maintaining high prices. Other major RAM makers - Samsung, Hynix, Micron - have also been under investigation. Dell CEO Michael Dell has described the group as a ‘Cartel’. As part of Infineon’s settlement with the DOJ, the 3rd largest in the division’s history, the company will aid the government in investigations into the other companies.

The memory market has long been expensive and debatably over-priced. Consumers have been forced into high prices, illegally. One hopes the decision could change this.

Spamming Phillies Fan Found Guilty

Spamming Phillies Fan Found Guilty 01/06/2005 05:24 PM
A while back, we wrote about the angry Philadelphia Phillies fan who was so upset with how the baseball team was run that he hijack ed computers around the world, sending out an angry spam denouncing Phillies management, and to top it all off, forging the return address to make it look like it was a local sports reporter who wrote the email. Not a huge surprise, but the guy has now been found guilty of "fraud, identity theft, and computer hacking." The best part, though, is his defense (he defended himself). He claims "he did not believe what he did was a crime or that it would cause harm to the newspapers." And you wonder why they tell people not to defend themselves in court.

Petterson's sister said that after the trial was over, Erwin was taking a long drive in his truck. He has been barred from driving during the two years of his trial.

Serial Online Proposer Found Guilty

Serial Online Proposer Found Guilty 12/22/2003 02:55 PM
Back in June, there was a lot of press attention paid to American Army Col. Kassem Saleh, stationed in Afghanistan, who had apparently propo sed to over 50 women he met online while he was already married. The Army wasn't too pleased about this, and they've now found Col. Saleh guilty of disclosing sensitive information, adultery and conduct unbecoming an officer. It turns out that he also spent thousands of dollars of Army money on international phone calls with these women. Of course, to make this story even more bizarre, someone needs to convince him to sue the various online dating sites from not stopping him from doing this - because, after all, these days, no individual is ever responsible for their own actions.
