Terry Zwigoff on old-time music

Terry Zwigoff on old-time music 05/14/2004 12:19 PM
Zwigoff I stumbled on this amazing interview from 1995 with Terry Zwigoff, the director of Crumb and Ghost World. Zwigoff is a member of Robert Crumb's band, the Cheap Suit Serenaders, and an obsessive collector of 78 RPM records released before 1933. The focus of this interview is Zwigoff's passion for old-time tunes.
"(Pre-1933) music is more backwoods and I think of it as representing real isolated pockets of eccentricity... I see radio, or mass communications in general, as ruining that isolation, which to me is what’s most interesting about it. People started imitating. People could hear Bing Crosby on the radio, so they’d all try to sound like him instead of having enough faith in their own weirdness to keep it going."

Instead of answering my inquiries, the 'peace officers' preferred to initiate force against me."

A television news director with 28 years in the biz--now a writer--tells PressThink: "I can recall instances where coverage actually was influenced and reporters with the courage to step forward actually did. The vast majority of times, however, efforts to involve minorities in 'their' stories erupted into arguments about type-casting." Critique of the diversity project from an ex-newsroom boss.

Who is talking about what?

Who is talking about what? 03/14/2005 05:45 PM
When my son was a bit younger, we noticed that when we asked him a question, he'd answer with a question. Inevitably this led to the following exchange:
Q: Why do you always answer a question with a question?

A: Why does everybody always ask me that?
I remembered that yesterday when somebody asked me: "Who do you read on the topic of REST?" I answered with a question of this form:
/item[contains(.,'REST')]/title
Which, translated into English, asks: "What RSS items have I read that mention REST?". You can run that query directly here, and you'll get back the most recent 25 matching items. Note that you can also subscribe to that query, using the orange XML icon at the bottom of the page. So not only can I answer the question with a question, but my answer keeps producing new answers. ...

Talking Trash

Talking Trash 04/22/2004 10:44 AM
BoingBoing reader ben peek says:
Talking garbage bins, how's that not futuristic coolness? but how long until they get irritating? (and will they update the poptune bins monthly?) from the article:

"In a uniquely German mix of hi-tech gadgetry and environmental awareness, Berlin authorities are installing talking trash cans in some of the German capital's most popular squares. Pop your litter into one of the bins and it's liable to say thank you. Or welcome you to Berlin in English, French or Japanese. Or even sing.

After a successful trial period, 20 of the bins have been installed in the Zoologischer Garten area of western Berlin's biggest shopping district and at the bustling business and entertainment hub of Potsdamer Platz."

And a speech-recognition technology that allows you to talk to your Mac to send commands to it -- what you usually do with a keyboard and mouse.

Five guys talking

Five guys talking 06/01/2004 03:38 PM
Tim Bray raises some good questions about last week's Gillmor Gang episode:
First of all, a transcript would be so much better; I don't have an hour to listen and if I did it would be in my car, and even if I tried, sitting here in my office (even though the audio is excellent) my attention is continually getting pulled away by email or instant messages or red letters in NetNewsWire or whatever. If I'm writing code or a tricky position paper or reading something material or even just thinking about a hard problem I can tune out the distractions no problem, but four guys talking? The mind wanders. [ongoi ng]
I agree. Doug Kaye is working on providing transcripts, but it's a hard problem and a thankless chore. Meanwhile, I've been exploring a middle-ground approach. I went through the first half of the show, in which various aspects of service-oriented architecture were batted around, and added a layer of indexing and annotation. The result: this SMIL presentation for the Real player. Note: Clicking an index link will seek in the audio stream and synch the annotations panel, but (at least for me) won't always actually play the audio at that location unless you click again. (Annoying. Why is that?) ...

Talking History

Talking History 04/11/2005 05:52 PM
Talking History is a radio show where historians talk about their latest work. The archives include MP3 and (sometimes) Realplayer streams, with discussions on topics like the Influenza Pandemic of 1918, George Washington and his slaves, and the history of "Boston Marriages" (today called same sex-unions). Some programs feature interesting archival audio, such as this speech by Elijah Muhammad.
