Independent dealers press on with
lawsuit against Apple
12/28/2004 05:39 PM
Independent Apple retailers could be assigned a trial date next month in their lawsuit filed against Apple Computer alleging unfair trade practices. Thomas Santos, president of MacAdams Computing, a San Francisco-based Apple retailer, said the trial date could be named as early as January 25, 2005, according to a report by CRN today. The lawsuit involves six independent retailers who claim Apple intentionally withheld adequate inventory from them in order to stock up Apple's own retail outlets and online store. The lawsuit also charges Apple with underpricing its retail partners, denying warranty claims made by certain retailers and poaching customers from retailers, said Santos.

Blog describes carryings on with many men, including a married Bush appointee who pays her for sex. Washington's most amusing and best read new blogger, Wonkette, links to it, picking out choice quotes. Within hours, the blog is gone, the girl is fired. Now another blogger outs the girl's boss as a Republican Senator. Fun!

Car Dealers Slowly Understanding What
The Internet Means

Car Dealers Slowly Understanding What
The Internet Means
06/11/2004 12:55 PM
Last time I bought a car, I went through Car Buying Tips in great detail and ended up getting a price well below invoice and significantly lower than what Edmund's called the "true market value" - which they claim is what you should pay. Best of all, the process went very quickly when dealing with the dealer (mostly via the internet) - because I was informed and didn't need to be bothered with various tricks. While I may not have brought in as much money directly from the car, I also didn't waste their time. It appears that more car dealers are beginning to recognize that the informed customer isn't always a bad customer. They're willing to pay a reasonable price and they don't need to be worked on for wasteful hours. What's most amusing about this article, though, is that there are now two types of dealers. The showroom dealers who like finding uninformed suckers and pushing the hard sell on them for hours at a time, and those who prefer to just get hot leads off the internet, sell more cars, and make more commissions (often based on number of vehicles sold - and not for how much).

Shocker: More People Prefer Online Car
Sales To Dealing With Dealers
04/11/2005 03:31 PM
Can you possibly imagine that people wouldn't like going in to car dealers and buying cars from a profession that seems to be defined by its own sleaze? Indeed, it appears that the less sleaze-inducing internet route for buying cars is picking up steam -- with plenty of car purchases originating online. Also, person-to-person car sales have been increasing as the internet has aided that process, and cut out the need for dealers to broker those types of sales. Meanwhile, fewer people seem to be going to the old newspaper classified section to find out about car deals, as it just doesn't seem efficient any more. The car sellers are looking elsewhere and car buyers prefer going online and avoiding dealers as much as possible as well.

I Feel So Used

I Feel So Used 08/16/2004 12:08 PM

When Search Engines Become Answer Engines: This is depressing, but no-doubt true.

A major change over the years has been a declining emphasis on using search to identify good sites as such. Rather than hunt for sites to explore and use in depth, users now hunt for specific answers. The Web as a whole has thus become one agglomerated resource for people who use search engines to dredge up specific pages related to specific needs, without caring which sites supply the pages.

I hit and run — I look for answer in Google, visit the page to get the answer, and never even take stock of where I am in the Web. I think Nielsen has good advice for converting users:

Embellish the answer with rich "see also" links to related content and services. Global navigation won't do the trick; answer-seekers will ignore it. Remember, they are not interested in your site. But contextual links will make the most eager users dig deeper -- and the eager ones are the people you'll want to keep as prospects for your for-pay services. See-also links can be embedded (as I've done here) or you can place them at the end of the article, where they serve as a follow-up call to action. The latter gives you the opportunity to let people know that you're actually selling something, and not just handing out free information.

When should changes take effect

When should changes take effect 01/22/2004 02:10 AM
Another question about Info/Inspector windows on OS X: when should changes take effect?

Some info windows (like NetNewsWire’s) have an OK or Apply button. Others update the object as you make changes in the Info window.

I think having a button is somewhat old-school: it’s very much like the days when non-document windows tended to be modal. You’d click OK to make the changes or Cancel to not make the changes.

But yet a button in a modeless window gives the user the chance to be explicit about making the changes. You can back out halfway through, and just not click the OK or Apply button.

Such a button becomes a problem, though, if you have multiple panes of info. To what does the button apply? All the panes where you made changes, or just the current pane?

(In case it’s not obvious, I’m adding some per-feed prefs—such as for feed validation—to NetNewsWire, and I’m looking at prior art in thinking about how to add extra info to the Info window. And I’m finding that prior art is a jumble: there is no clear consensus as there is with preferences windows. Ideas are of course welcome.)
