Jeremiah writes "Amidst the public ballyhoo about how rampant P2P piracy is costing the music business its very life (gasp! NO!), BMI announced it collected a record level of revenue and royalty payout to its artist members. From their press release: "BMI has reported revenues of $673 million for the 2004 fiscal year, an increase of nearly $43 million, 6.8% over the prior year. Royalties of more than $573 million were distributed to our songwriters, composers and music publishers, an increase of $40 million or 7.5% from the previous year, and the most ever paid by an American PRO." Another interesting tidbit: "During the period 1995-2004, BMI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 9%..." If I read this right, BMI has been reporting solid growth over the last nine years, which makes me question the industry's claims about P2P. Either P2P ate into their growth (not mentioned), they found a way to cope with it (plausible), or it may actually help music sales. Whatever. Reminds me a bit of a spec I did for a life-insurance company's radio ad: Money , Money, Money (mp3 file)."

Money 2005: Microsoft Unveils Simplified
Approach to Financial Management and
Helps People Make Sense of Their Money
09/21/2004 08:41 AM
Marking the largest development effort for Microsoft(R) Money since the personal finance software was launched 13 years ago, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced Microsoft Money 2005 Premium, Deluxe, Standard and Small Business. Completely rebuilt to simplify daily financial tasks, Money 2005 is designed to answer the growing number of consumer requests for a simple solution that addresses the three primary areas of financial concern: tracking account balances, monitoring spending and paying bills. Consumers today have less time than ever to spend managing their finances, which has contributed to the number of American households banking online -- due to its convenience and efficiency -- reaching nearly 33 million.(1) Money 2005 builds on this trend by helping people access all their accounts in one place and providing automated tools that reduce or eliminate the manual entry required by traditional personal finance software.

FedEx Buying Kinko's

FedEx Buying Kinko's 12/30/2003 02:48 PM
FedEx has stepped up to buy Kinko's for $2.4 billion. It's an interesting move, and sort of one-ups UPS, who bought Mailboxes Etc. a few years ago, and have been increasingly trying to turn them into more of a Kinko's style competitor. There are definite synergies in the two companies, and it will be interesting to see what sort of changes FedEx makes to Kinko's over time. For now, they say they're keeping management in place.

For the second day in a row now, I'm "stuck" working from home because of stupidity on the part of both Apple and FedEx. You see, last week I ordered a second power adaptor for my Powerbook. Institute
11/19/2003 04:36 PM
Apparently, the innovative work coming out of various universities wasn't enough to keep the shipping business up to speed. If you've ever seen or heard about the backend technology operations that keep UPS or FedEx running, you already know how incredibly complex and sophisticated they are. And, no one is slowing down. FedEx has now launched their own FedEx Institute of Technology to do more bleeding edge research on things that might someday impact how they get a package from point A to point B. They're looking at ways to improve the basic shipping process as well as any number of related areas - such as making airplanes more efficient or creating artificially intelligent customer service agents. The Institute, which is being set up in association with University of Memphis, isn't just supposed to help FedEx, either, but other corporations are encouraged to take part as well. It sounds like the next extension of the issue we were just talking about where some feel that Univers ities are too close to the tech companies that support them. Now, they're even building research institutes specifically to deal with their problems.

FedEx Studying Robot Cargo Planes

FedEx Studying Robot Cargo Planes 02/05/2005 09:44 PM
An article in the Memphis Business Journal describes research being done at the FedEx Institute of Technology to develop robot cargo planes that don't need pilots. The article doesn't give any specifics about the program but says it's "on the horizon". It may refer to the experiments some years ago in which Raytheon and FedEx autolanded a 727-200 cargo plane using LAAS and JPALS. At the time it was rumored they were going to work on a remotely piloted 727 next. The article says FedEx is also working on "performance enhancement" technology for their human workers that will "increase the human capacity to accomplish more work".
