Forget iTunes...

Forget iTunes... 06/10/2004 12:55 PM

So, you want some hot mp3's? Well, this is the place (Russian, but English cookie-set option in top-left). Huge repositories of legal music, yours to download for only $0.01/Mb! If that's not enough, they'll even serve it up to you in any format or bitrate you require (MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMV). Add on to that the fact there's no DRM built into the files downloaded, and the option to pay with Paypal is a nice touch too. So, I ask you, MetaFilter, what is the catch?

And neither are the inhabitants of the United States, however vociferously many Americans may insist that they are. War is something else entirely. No semi-normal life can be led while a war is going on. The Madrilenians who lived through the siege of their city from 1936 to 1939 know that very well....

No I Didn't Forget About the Bookmarklets ...

Feedster!  Now available as a bookmarklet!  Get it here.  I tested this on both PCs and an OS X iBook.  The PC stuff worked but the OS X stuff did not.  I have no clue why.  And before Mozilla Andy jumps all over me, I did them for Mozilla too.

That's about it for the day.  Database is much larger, the pool of RSS urls is larger.  New hardware soon.  Good stuff overall.

Miscellaneous and Random Stuff

Oh and here's the rant of the day: Stupid, Stupid VB.  Even better than the bile I spewed this morning about ASPx stuff.  This one covers the myriad of human factors issues in Visual Basic.  I'm an ex-VB guy and I can attest to every single one of these.  I'd also add one more -- why is the dialog box for selecting COM objects to insert onto a form tiny?  I mean I have hundreds of the damn little things and I look thru them in groups of maybe 15.  Hello?  Microsoft Product Managers?  Anyone Listening?

Inbox Buddy

I've gotten some questions about my Inbox Buddy anti-spam product and does Feedster mean that we're now not doing that?  Nope.  We have the resources and committment to do both.  In fact, we'll be pushing the 1.1 version of Inbox Buddy out the door next week with some improved anti-spam features and performance enhancements.  If you use Outlook then you really might want to check out Inbox Buddy.  The people that have it pretty much love it to pieces.

Note: I'm one of the people who wrote Inbox Buddy so keep that in mind.  That, however, doesn't mean that its not a good product.

And Don't Forget The Seed Patents...

And Don't Forget The Seed Patents... 11/03/2003 04:24 AM
This story isn't anything new, but the NY Times has an update on Monsanto's laswuits against those who dare to plant seeds that were genetically modified by Monsanto. Here's what happened: a farmer bought some modified seeds from Monsanto and grew his crops. At the end of the year, he saved some of the seeds from the plants and replanted them the following year. Monsanto claims he's "stealing" from them. They've sued plenty of other farmers and won - but one case has now reached the federal appeals court who (hopefully) will take a more common sense approach to something like this. If you follow patent lawsuits, Monsanto's seed lawsuits are nothing new, but the cases do have some interesting parallels with the music industry's lawsuits against those who share copyrighted music. It's another case where, because someone slaps a "license" agreement on what you buy, you're don't actually own it, any more. While it may seem obvious that you can hang onto the seeds from plants you grow, thanks to a very legalistic "technology agreement" on the bag of seeds, the farmers were supposed to understand that they simply had to ditch the seeds. This seems backwards and wasteful - but makes sense, thanks to our backwards intellectual property rules.

Here are the Hamsters! A graduate student at Cornell University built a MIDI sequencer controlled by six hamsters:
"The MIDI sequencer intelligently produced melodies by manipulating the musical elements of rhythm and note-choice. Guided by inputs based on hamster movements, Markov chains were used to perform such beat and note computations. In culmination, 3 simultaneous voices were produced spanning 3 octaves and 3 rhythmic tiers. Each voice was controlled by two hamsters: one that was responsible for adjusting the rhythmic qualities of the melody and another that modified the note sequence. With all of these elements in combination, an output was produced with very musical qualities."

EMC Buys VMWare; Forget The IPO 12/15/2003 06:53 PM
EMC is going acquisition crazy. They recently bought Documentum and Legato, and today made the somewhat surprising announcement that they are buying VMWare. It had seemed that the earlier deals were sort of desperation plays between large companies who were finding their business models smoked out from under them. This deal, however, is quite a bit different. VMWare is a Silicon Valley darling that was expected to go public early next year - and was considered one of the bright spots for the potential IPO class of 2004. Apparently, once the offer was on the table, they believed it was better to take what was in front of them. It will be interesting to see what EMC does with VMWare - as it's a bit far out of their usual business areas. However, if anything, this is a bad sign for those who believe that the IPO market is back.

Tennessee rejects download service 05/07/2004 12:38 AM

The Tennessee Board of Regents , representing forty-five campuses, rejected a plan to launch a noninfringing music downloading service. Roxio , who owns Napster 2.0 , made the offer, which includes a monthly fee paid by students, and the rights to streaming content.

However ,

...the mandatory fee that was part of the Tennessee plan, coupled with the perception that illegal downloading doesn't pose a specific problem for the schools, prompted system officials to table the idea, said Bob Adams, the Regents' vice chancellor for business and finance.

Several colleges and universities are already piloting such a service, such as Penn State .

pspupdater.jpg imageThe Register is reporting that Sony will be launching a new music service specifically for its PSP portable gaming system. The new download service is supposed to be in place by March here to coincide with the launch of Sony's player. Tony Smith speculates that the service, once in place, could just as easily be used to push video content down to the device, which doesn't have a hard drive, but can accept flash MemoryStick in 1-2GB sizes—plenty big for a couple of movies.

I think if Sony's got a shot at the iPod, the PSP is it—it can do almost everything you'd want to do while on the road, including productivity stuff (if they release a keyboard).

Microsoft on Wednesday launched its video download service for handheld devices that use Windows Mobile.

Owners of Portable Media Centers, smart phones and pocket computers will be able to download daily programs and other video content from MSNBC.com, Food Network, Fox Sports, IFilm and other content providers, Microsoft said. Sony launched a noninfringing music downloading service, entering a growing market still dominated by Apple's iTunes and including a revised Napster .

Connect is based on a downloadable client , offers more than five hundred thousand songs, and offers now-traditional pricing: ninety-nine cents per song, with a subscription option. Additionally, Connect is appealing to indepedent labels for more content. As with iTunes, a digital rights management ( DRM ) application, MagicGate DRM , restricts sharing of downloaded music files. Connect's file format, ATRAC 3 , is not compatible with the popular iPod portable music player. The desktop client is available for Windows machines only.

Microsoft Admits Plans For Music
Download Service
11/17/2003 11:10 PM
Well, this should be a surprise to absolutely no one, but Microsoft has now officially confirmed their plans to offer a me-too music download service as part of their MSN properties. I'm almost surprised it's getting any news coverage at all - but when you mention Microsoft you get press. The thing that's interesting to me is that very few people are asking questions about how these hundred or so music download services are going to fit together. If I buy a CD from Tower Records, it's the same CD that I buy from a little independent music shop down the street or that I order online from Amazon. That's not the case with all these download stores. Each one has different formats and different restrictions - making the whole space one big mess. Why should I bother wading in when I have no idea if the music I buy will actually be useful to me in a year?
