Don't Forget About PHP-CON!
10/16/2002 05:35 AMDon't Forget About PHP-CON!
I'm posting this at the request of the very, very nice folks at
PHP-CON. I can't say enough good things about these folks. They're
putting on a conference in tough times and doing a fine job of it.
(Note that I'm a paid speaker so I'm biased here but I get nothing on
attendance, posting this is a favor.)
We know times are tough and budgets are tight. But the need to keep up
with technology and technical education never ceases. This is why
weve extended our Early Bird registration discount an extra
week.
If you eat, sleep, and breathe web development -- if you have your
hands in PHP everyday you need to attend this conference. And
if you register on or before Friday, October 18th you will
continue to receive a $100 discount on fees.
PHPCon 2002 offers attendees a comprehensive, practical technical
program featuring:
Keynote by Rasmus Lerdorf, Inventor of PHP
Three Technical tracks including Enterprise PHP, Applications
Development, and XML/CMS.
Best Practices from gurus and greats such as Dirk Elmendorf of
Rackspace, Introduction to SOAP for PHP with Shane Caraveo,
ActiveState,
Reading the PHP Source with Zak Greant, MySQL Community Advocate, and
High Performance PHP:Profiling and Benchmarking Techniques with George
Schlossnagle, OmniTI
Opportunities to meet and mingle with peers, gurus, and greats in a
relaxed, congenial setting.
PHPCon 2002 is just around the corner. Join us on October 24th and
25th at the Clarion Hotel in Millbrae, California for the first

Oh and here's the rant of the day: Stupid, Stupid VB. Even better than the bile I spewed

human factors issues in Visual Basic. I'm an ex-VB guy and I can
attest to every single one of these. I'd also
add one more -- why is the dialog box for selecting COM objects to

Nope. We have the resources and committment to do both. In
fact, we'll be pushing the 1.1 version of Inbox Buddy out the door
next week with some improved anti-spam features and performance
enhancements. If you use Outlook then you really might want to

And Don't Forget The Seed Patents...
And Don't Forget The Seed Patents...
11/03/2003 04:24 AMThis story isn't anything new, but the NY Times has an update on
Monsanto's
laswuits against
those who dare to plant seeds that were genetically modified by
Monsanto. Here's what happened: a farmer bought some modified
seeds from Monsanto and grew his crops. At the end of the year, he
saved some of the seeds from the plants and replanted them the
following year. Monsanto claims he's "stealing" from them. They've
sued plenty of other farmers and won - but one case has now reached
the federal appeals court who (hopefully) will take a more common
sense approach to something like this. If you follow patent lawsuits,
Monsanto's seed lawsuits are nothing new, but the cases do have some
interesting parallels with the music industry's lawsuits against those
who share copyrighted music. It's another case where, because someone
slaps a "license" agreement on what you buy, you're don't actually own
it, any more. While it may seem obvious that you can hang onto the
seeds from plants you grow, thanks to a very legalistic "technology
agreement" on the bag of seeds, the farmers were supposed to
understand that they simply had to ditch the seeds. This seems
backwards and wasteful - but makes sense, thanks to our backwards
intellectual property rules.

04/15/2004 11:37 AMHere are the Hamsters! A graduate student at Cornell University built
a MIDI sequencer controlled by six hamsters:
"The MIDI sequencer intelligently produced melodies by manipulating
the musical elements of rhythm and note-choice. Guided by inputs based
on hamster movements, Markov chains were used to perform such beat and
note computations. In culmination, 3 simultaneous voices were produced
spanning 3 octaves and 3 rhythmic tiers. Each voice was controlled by
two hamsters: one that was responsible for adjusting the rhythmic
qualities of the melody and another that modified the note sequence.
With all of these elements in combination, an output was produced with
very musical qualities."

EMC Buys VMWare; Forget The IPO
12/15/2003 06:53 PMEMC is going acquisition crazy. They recently
bought
Documentum and Legato, and today made the somewhat surprising
announcement that
they
are buying VMWare. It had seemed that the earlier deals were sort
of desperation plays between large companies who were finding their
business models smoked out from under them. This deal, however, is
quite a bit different. VMWare is a Silicon Valley darling that was
expected to go public early next year - and was considered one of the
bright spots for the potential IPO class of 2004. Apparently, once
the offer was on the table, they believed it was better to take what
was in front of them. It will be interesting to see what EMC does
with VMWare - as it's a bit far out of their usual business areas.
However, if anything, this is a bad sign for those who believe that
the IPO market is back.

The
Tennessee Board of Regents , representing forty-five campuses, rejected a plan to launch a noninfringing music downloading
service. Roxio , who owns Napster 2.0 , made the offer,
which includes a monthly fee paid by students, and the rights to
streaming content.
However ,
...the mandatory fee that was part of the Tennessee plan, coupled with
the perception that illegal downloading doesn't pose a specific
problem for the schools, prompted system officials to table the idea,
said Bob Adams, the Regents' vice chancellor for business and
finance.
Several colleges and universities are already piloting such a

The Register is reporting that Sony will be launching a new
music service specifically for its PSP portable gaming system. The new
download service is supposed to be in place by March here to coincide
with the launch of Sony's player. Tony Smith speculates that the
service, once in place, could just as easily be used to push video
content down to the device, which doesn't have a hard drive, but can
accept flash MemoryStick in 1-2GB sizes—plenty big for a couple
of movies.
I think if Sony's got a shot at the iPod, the PSP is it—it
can do almost everything you'd want to do while on the road, including
productivity stuff (if they release a keyboard).

Well, this should be a surprise to absolutely no one, but Microsoft
has now officially confirmed their plans to offer a me-too music download service
as part of their MSN properties. I'm almost surprised it's getting
any news coverage at all - but when you mention Microsoft you get
press. The thing that's interesting to me is that very few people are
asking questions about how these hundred or so music download services
are going to fit together. If I buy a CD from Tower Records, it's the
same CD that I buy from a little independent music shop down the
street or that I order online from Amazon. That's not the case with
all these download stores. Each one has different formats and
different restrictions - making the whole space one big mess. Why
should I bother wading in when I have no idea if the music I buy will
actually be useful to me in a year?
