Stealth Overclocking
Stealth Overclocking
04/12/2005 01:05 PMThere's an awful lot of overclocking out there: The Windows team
at Microsoft was getting some bizarre crash reports. They followed up
on 10 of them, and found that five people had intentionally
overclocked their system. As for the rest:
The other half said, "What's overclocking?" He called them and
walked them through some configuration information and was able to
conclude that they were indeed all overclocked. But these people were
not overclocking on purpose. The computer was already overclocked
when they bought it. These "stealth overclocked" computers came
from small, independent "Bob's Computer Store"-type shops, not from
one of the major computer manufacturers or retailers.
So are these shops buying slower processings, then overclocking
them and selling them as CPUs of the actual speed they've been
overclocked to? Sneaky. Sleazy.

06/18/2004 07:00 PMSilicon.com reports on BAE Systems's radio frequency blocking
wallpaper: It's 50 to 100 microns thick and can adhere to most

similar to how circuit boards are laid down. There's no timeline for
commercial availability. Some versions can be switched on and off;
others are permanent. [link via TechDirt]...

finger-points-at-exposed-prisoner-genitalia pose made famous by Pfc.
Lynndie England in Abu Ghraib torture photos. As a website devoted to
Stealth Lynndie-ing explains, "The image has shocked, sickened and
outraged people. But more importantly, it has captured the imagination
of young men and women up and down the country who don't give much of
a shit about anything."
I'm not sure what's more disturbing about this online photo gallery --
(a) the fact that people are sick enough do this, photograph this,
publish it on the web, and think it's funny; (b) the fact that I'm
blogging about it, or (c) the fact that Lynndie England bears a
striking resemblance to the fellow in the photo at left. Photo gallery
featuring dozens of anonymous people "striking a Lynndie": Link (Thanks, Doug)

Meshy Problems -- Or Stealth Marketing
Meshy Problems -- Or Stealth Marketing
06/30/2004 01:07 PM
The fact that wireless mesh networks have problems is nothing new.
We've spoken about it
plenty of
times before, explaining how wireless mesh networks have issues
with scalability and latency. What they're
good at is
redundancy. You can take out a node and the others should make up for
it for the time being. These aren't particularly new issues, and, in
fact, many companies and
researchers<
/a> are working to try to solve some of the bigger mesh networking
problems. Obviously, it's good to take the glowing press reports
about mesh networking with a grain of salt, but it looks like someone
in the wireless mesh networking space is trying to use some "reverse
psychology" to promote his own company. It may have seemed a bit odd
to see someone who positions himself as an "insider" in the wireless
mesh networking world (the founder and CTO of a mesh networking
company) hesitantly posting a comment about how he wasn't sure whether
or not to post it, but mesh networks have scalability problems. What was
surprising wasn't the fact that mesh networks have scalability
problems. As stated -- that's well known. What was odd was that a
supposed insider felt the need to "leak" this well known info in such
a hesitant manner. The reasoning becomes a lot less odd when you look
at the website of the "mesh networking" company the guy founded (which
I won't link to) -- since it contains pretty much the same info and
suggests that his company has come up with the "solution" to the
problem. Right. Okay. It's also clear that he wasn't all that
hesitant to post this info, since he
submitted
identical information to our site in the form of a comment to a
post from a year and a half ago... In other words, this isn't so much
an outsider "revealing" insider secrets, but a method of stealth
marketing. Pretend you're leaking a "dirty secret" about your
industry to a blog, and then announce (surprise, surprise!) you've got
the solution.
