Gmail Invitation Market Bottoms Out

Gmail Invitation Market Bottoms Out 06/10/2004 09:32 AM

Gm ail Invitation Prices Crash: A good lesson in economics here.

On Monday morning, invitations to join the testing of Google's Gmail Web e-mail service were still fetching as much as $100 on eBay closed auctions. By Wednesday afternoon, sellers were lucky to crack the $20 mark.

Increased supply is the likely cause.

Gmail Invitation Prices Crash 06/10/2004 06:16 AM
Not too long ago, people were willing to pay top dollar to snag an invitation to set up an account on Google's Gmail Web e-mail service. But Google seems to have become more generous with the invitations. Demand, meet supply. By Chris Ulbrich.

Gmail Invites Flood The Market, Prices
Crash
06/10/2004 09:48 AM
When we first heard that people were actually paying good money to get themselves a soon-to-be-free Gmail account, we couldn't believe it. Who would pay for a free email account? Apparently, the answer is a lot of people. Either way, this week Gmail started giving out plenty of new invites, which has fl ooded the market and devalued the price. Still, it makes you wonder how those who spent hundreds of dollars on a simple email account feel now. Either way, it appears that Google is now a big fan of the "velvet rope" method of building buzz. Having set up both Orkut and Gmail with the "invite only" method of getting in, they've made them seem even more appealing. It won't be long before every other company tries the same sort of thing - though, it probably won't work nearly as well.

About Zawodny's invitation to flame

About Zawodny's invitation to flame 04/23/2004 07:13 PM

Yesterday I pointed to a post by Jeremy Zawodny that appeared to be calling for a flame fest with me as the guest of honor. I pointed to it after the first few comments made it clear that it wasn't going to be a flame fest. In fact, it was the most rational discussion of conflict disclosure I've seen to date in the weblog world. It left me bursting with pride to be part of this community.

There's nothing wrong when someone writes an essay advocating something that they have a financial interest in, as long as the interest is disclosed. For example, if you're going to buy a house, it's good to know you're reading something written by someone who will profit if you buy the house. That's why you get an inspector to look over the house after you decide to make an offer. And why you'd feel betrayed if it turned out the inspector was getting a percentage of the sale. (In fact the inspector would go to jail for doing that.)

So when a Google shareholder write's an empassioned defense of Google, it was correct for Zawodny to ask if he was a shareholder. He did ask, and got an answer, and as far as I was concerned, that was news, so I pointed to it. All of this is good, it's the system working as it should.

As I read John Battelle's analysis of search engines, I wonder if he is consulting for the companies he's writing about. John has a long career as a journalist and now as a professor, both professions require disclosures of conflicts of interest, so I assume he has no such conflict, because I haven't seen a disclaimer from him.

On the other hand, I often see people who I know have conflicts writing in their area of conflict without disclosure. In a world where everyone's playing footsie, if you tend to out people, you quickly get a rep for being difficult, or having personality problems. Does this sound familiar? Heh.

In any case, the thread on Zawodny's was a milestone. Thanks to Tara, Brian, Ryan, Randy, Scott and Rogers and the others who stood up and said it's important to know where people are coming from. Tell people when you have a conflict, they'll read you more carefully, they'll respect you more, and the world will be a better place.

NEC's "smart" batteries: invitation to
monopolistic DMCA nightmare
07/08/2004 05:32 AM
NEC has announced that its batteries will have cryptographic authentication schemes to prevent "low-quality counterfeits." Jason Schultz comments on the way that the DMCA turns such a sytem into a license to screw your customers by shutting out competitors who make cheaper batteries:
The software will be introduced in Japanese digital cameras by year's end and is expected to be used in 50 million units by 2007. The software is ideal for use in mobile phones and batteries, but NEC Electronics is also considering extending this technology to "smart" keys, printers and ink cartridges, as well as bundling the technology into hardware options.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, software-based authentication is the wave of the future. And now, with the DMCA, a near-monopoly! Future, here we come.

Tweaking CC's Standard Attribution
Language - An Invitation to Comment
06/05/2005 11:40 PM

So a new license draft has been posted here. The changes relate to our standard attribution language and the plan is that they take effect across all of our core licenses. The new version will be 2.5 because it is a minor change. We are in the process of working through other revisions to the licenses that will form the basis for version 3.0 but this change is needed now to take account of the demands of wikis & the open access journal community.

Many of you have given comments on the beta wiki license which have been very useful. The difference between this license draft and the beta wiki is that attribution in this draft can be to the author and/or one or more other parties. The beta wiki license only permitted attribution to the author *or* another party or parties. Also, we have included an additional example in the brackets to make it clear that one of the attributed parties may be a journal.

For a more detailed explanation of the changes, check out this posting to our licenses discussion list. You can join the discussion here.

Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail

Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail 05/26/2004 01:35 PM
Last month there was a lot of talk about the somewhat clueless move by a California politician to create a law that would ban Google's Gmail offering, despite the fact that it was completely optional to use. It appears that enough people (probably including those at Google itself) sat down with State Senator Liz Figueroa to explain how email works, and have convinced her to tone down the bill so that it now allows Gmail. That's right, the anti-Gmail bill now has loopholes that specifically allow Gmail. In other words, Senator Figueroa seems to have realized just how pointless the bill was in the first place and is trying to save face by adjusting it so that it still seems to have a purpose: banning a bunch of things that no one was doing, like having humans read the content of your emails to put in advertising.

Lockergnome reverts

Lockergnome reverts 03/08/2004 11:17 PM

I decided to hold off commenting on the news that Lockergnome were dropping their CSS layout in favour of a table based alternative until I had seen the new design for myself. I figured that they were probably just going to move to a transitional tables/CSS combination design with tables used to bypass some of the more taxing cross-browser issues. I think the following code snippet from their new front page speaks for itself:

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<table border="0" cellspacing="0"
cellpadding="0" width="778"
bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<tr><td align="left">
<div id="footer">

A blockquote for indentation, inside a table that exists purely to apply a width, following on from two empty paragraphs for added vertical space? It's like CSS margin properties never happened. Welcome back to 1996.

Lockergnome: Geocaching

Lockergnome: Geocaching 09/03/2004 01:08 AM
Have you ever heard of geocaching? If not, let me explain the concept. The idea is that individuals and organizations set up caches (or treasure chests, for the pirates in the audience) in any number of locations around the world, and they then share the location of the cache on the Internet. You can then use a GPS device to locate the hidden treasure by using these coordinates. Any number of things can be found in the cache, but the rule is that if you take something, you should leave something. It’s a fun activity that is perfect for the adventurous geek. To learn more about this sport, visit the official Geocaching site.
