Economy of Scales: Edirol R-1

Economy of Scales: Edirol R-1 03/23/2005 05:36 PM

r1edido.jpgiPod is great for playback, but it's not much use when it comes to recording. Try Edirol's R-1 instead: palm-sized, integrated stereo microphone, and recording to CompactFlash. With 1GB of CF running about $70 (the R-1 costs under $400), removable media is the way to go. And as opposed to cheap consumer audio gadgets, this box records absolutely clean; even the built-in stereo mic sounds terrific (check out the audio samples). The extras are just as impressive: there's a built-in metronome and tuner for practicing, plus built-in digital effects for EQ, noise reduction, and reverb, and even software simulation of different microphone types -- you can even fake a vintage mic. When you're ready to off-load your recordings, you can plug into your computer via USB 2.0 (or use onboard digital out or analog in/out). See CDM for more details and discussion. If you're a video/audio pro, check out the hard drive-based 4-track R-4.

Edirol ships R-4 recorder with BWF
format support
03/19/2005 03:14 AM
Edirol Corp. on Friday announced that its R-4 recorder, which was first introduced last October, is now shipping. The company has added support for Broadcast Wave Format (BWF), which enables the R-4 to write the metadata required to comply with that standard. BWF files can be used in any playback device or audio editor that is compatible with the WAV format. The R-4 features a 40GB hard drive and USB 2.0 connectivity, with the ability to hold up to 17 hours of material at 24-bit/96kHz quality or up to 58 hours at 16-bit/44.1kHz, which is comparable to a CD.

compressor
09/14/2004 07:23 AM
Elemental Audio Systems on Tuesday introduced Neo dynium, a plug-in for RTAS, Audio Unit and VST-compatible audio software designed for compression and dynamics processing. It uses an "I/O Map" visual interface that helps audio pros optimize and direct their efforts, rather than relying on more common transfer curves and displays. Neodynium costs US$159 (and is available for $139 for a limited time). It works with Digidesign Pro Tools, Emagic Logic and other software. System requirements call for a G3 or faster with Mac OS X v10.2 or newer and a compatible host application.

Input Drives Microsoft Office OneNote
2003 Service Pack 1
04/20/2004 11:26 PM
In an academic setting, a score of 90 percent earns an automatic "A". By that measure, the team shaping Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 merits a similar high passing grade. When the innovative application debuted last October, it reflected the pioneering edge of the digital note-taking category. Today, Microsoft honed that edge by announcing the preview release of Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1 (OneNote SP1). Ninety percent of the features included in the software update are a direct result of customer input and feedback -- with the remaining 10 percent coming from indirect customer feedback.
