Moore's tactics

Moore's tactics 06/30/2004 08:05 AM

Nicholas Kristof: "Insults and rage impede understanding." Amen.

About the Michael Moore movie, Farenhe it 9/11. I haven't seen it and I don't plan to. I'm an American before I'm a member of any political party, and I have more invested in the intelligence of our decision-making process than in any one decision. I'd rather re-elect Bush than elect a president based on Moore's politics.

THINK!Yesterday on NPR they played an excerpt where he confronts members of Congress and asks if they would send their children to fight in Iraq. What a ridiculous question. No parent will say yes to that question. You could have asked that question on the Capitol steps during World War II and they still wouldn't say yes. See how this cheapens the question of whether we should be in Iraq? In a smart world, we wouldn't be there, but it isn't because Congress people won't say yes when confronted by a camera crew.

Moore is the worst of American politics, an opportunist, an anti-intellectual.

Vote no on Moore.

A Change in Tactics

A Change in Tactics 12/17/2004 06:37 PM

Over the course of the past month, an interesting trend is beginning to be noticeable. In general, computer attacks methods follow the ups and downs of the latest vulnerabilities being released. This case has become more apparent in the past few years with the time between disclosure of a vulnerability, and the release of proof of concept exploits becoming very short. Even after a vulnerability is released, it takes the general population on the Internet almost 6-8 months to effectively patch against the vulnerabilities.
Whether it is due to better security programming or better mitigation tactics, in the past 6-8 months, we have not seen a vulnerability which gives “Easy” or Worm-like access to computers. This drought in viable vulnerabilities has started a change in the tactics being used by the miscreant community in order to continue to compromise the machines needed to keep the underground economy running.
This change in tactics beings us back to some of the fundamental vulnerabilities for which there are not patches. Generally classified as default or weak passwords, this tactic is best exploited through brute force attacking which is on a sharp raise.
It appears that the systems being sought after most include: Microsoft SQL Database Servers, various UNIX platforms with open SSH services, IMAP mail servers, and other database servers including Oracle.
Database servers are particularly interesting for the miscreants because in addition to giving them access to potentially taking over the computer, it can also potentially provide them with useful information stored in the database which can aide in the theft of identity and other fraud.
Being a paranoid security geek, I would highly recommend that actions be taken to determine what levels of exposure you have on your systems. This is not an exploit method we always think about, but which requires more than just keeping up on critical patches.

COINTELPRO II: Police tactics since 9-11

COINTELPRO II: Police tactics since 9-11 02/17/2004 04:58 PM
Kevin Bankston, EFF's Equal Justice Works/Bruce J. Ennis Fellow, sez, "This is an incredible, two part series in Salon about cops spying on political activists post-9/11. It is an absolute must read."
"What we're seeing is something much larger in scale and danger than anything that occurred in the 1950s and 1960s," he says. "That's because of computers. Now, instead of having these agencies working in semi-isolation or occasional cooperation, there's the equivalent of the great Alaska pipeline running between them, and the information flows in both directions. In addition, in the 1950s or '60s, it took weeks of pavement pounding and doorknobbing for the FBI or police or military to collect personal information about people, the kind of information you need to put them under surveillance. Today that kind of information can be obtained by a few computer keystrokes. The harassment potential is much greater."

Apple and RealNetworks are still “at it” over the technology that allows RealNetworks to play their music content over the Apple’s iPod music device. My first thought is for Apple to quit whining. Nevermind the fact that the music is still being played over the much loved iPod in the…
