water birth

water birth 12/22/2003 03:04 PM
Water birth is an alternative to standard hospital labor where the woman gives birth in a pool of water. Many hospitals/birth centers now offer the option of a water birth, or the mother-to-be can choose from a wide variety of birthing pools for labor at home, usually assisted by a midwife/nurse with experience in waterbirth. There are many benefits of a gentle introduction to the world by being born in water, and the testimonials make it sound like a great option. Note: some links may be NSFW. [more inside]

The Birth of the Notebook 03/22/2005 04:59 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Chris Null has written a great article about the early history of portable PCs for Mobile PC magazine.
Images Features Birthofnotebook Osbourne Inspired by the IBM 5100 and Xerox's Notetaker -- a 48-pound machine with a keyboard that folded over the display -- Osborne's eponymous computer was cobbled together from the cheapest parts he could find. The Osborne 1 hit the market at $1,795, with dual floppy drives and a 5-inch CRT. Flip the keyboard over the front, latch it on, and your 24.5-pound computer was ready to go wherever you needed it. Osborne had amazing success with the product, but it was fatally crushed by the birth of Compaq in 1983, which copied the Osborne carefully while adding one killer feature: IBM compatibility.

Link

UPDATE: Stefan says: "I actually worked on an Osborne in the early '80s. The college SF club had one. We used it to lay out the schedule and generate individually numbered tickets for our SF convention. I recall using the included BASIC to create a program that would generate a Superbowl betting grid.

"One of the big selling points for the Osborne was the software. The company pioneered the concept of bundling. In addition to the CP/M operating system, you got WordStar, a spreadsheet, a flat-file database program and so on. It even had a nice app for reading and writing PC-format disks.

"The computer itself was, frankly, a piece of shit. The monitor was 52 columns wide; when your typing reached the end of a line the display shifted left. It was terribly susceptible to static shock. You learned to save your work every few minutes in dry weather, because resets and lockups were a regular occurrence."

The birth of a [sign] language

The birth of a [sign] language 09/18/2004 06:57 PM
Experts Study New Sign Language System A new system of sign language developed by deaf children in Nicaragua may hold clues about the evolution of languages. When the country's first school for the deaf was established in 1977, children were not taught sign language but developed a system of signs to communicate. Childhood learning may determine linguistic rules ...They found that older students used hand signals resembling the gestures employed by hearing people, mimicking the entire event physically. But younger pupils - who had interacted with other deaf children from an early age - used a more complex series of signs. They split the scene into component parts and arranged these sequentially to convey the incident. The constructions resemble the way words and sentences are built in verbal languages, using segments structured in a linear fashion. This indicates that way the younger children learnt the sign language helped reshape it according to these linguistic rules.

The Posting That Gave Birth To a Web
Site

The Posting That Gave Birth To a Web
Site
06/10/2004 04:34 PM

A long time ago, in the wee hours of the morning, I made a post to Gadgetopia entitled Fake Escrow Sites. It was a posting about how crooks use fake escrow sites to cheat people out of money. It was just one or two sentences, and it linked to a news article. I was a little disturbed at what I read, calling it "ugly stuff."

It's gotten great search e ngine placement, and, consequently, it gets an enormous amount of traffic every day and a ton of comments. The average entry on Gadgetopia has 0.83 comments — this one has 130+.

There's apparently a real need for people to know which escrow sites are good and which aren't. I like this posting a lot because — at the risk of sounding dramatic, it's really helping people. Here are excerpts from some of the comments.

I have someone trying to get me to go through this site as well, instead of via amazon. I'm very glad I haven't sent off anything yet [...]

Thanks to this site I've been saved from sending off a £6000+ diamond ring [...]

Like Nick Allan, I too have just been saved from what appears to be the same person in Moldova [...]

I too have been saved a ton of money by this site. I was almost duped for a Rolex Yachtmaster watch [...]

So, as you can see, this is a very good thing. Since it's SO good, we're happy to announce:

http://www.fakeescrowsites.com/< /a>

Nothin' but a big discussion board that will hopefully continue the great discussion and impact that the blog posting has had. It's an expirement really — if you throw up a simple collaboration platform to address a real need with a real audience, will it thrive? We're about to find out.

There's still some work to do in configuring the forum, but since this isn't a revenue-generating operation, I wanted to get it up and out there before other pressures took me away from it. It's a case of, "if you wait until you're ready, you'll never be ready."

In doing this, I had to work very hard to stifle over-analysis that would scare me out of it — namely, the potential for lawsuits. I wrote some very clear and frank policies for the site, and I'm simply going to brave the legal waters and hope for the best. I have faith that we'll do much more good than harm.

I have never used an escrow site. I've only used eBay once. But in seeing some of the stories in that news article, and some of the comments that were posted, I really think we have a chance to make an impact here.

Who was David S. Canter #1?

Who was David S. Canter #1? 09/24/2004 01:18 AM

dad-harold.jpg

One day I stumbled downstairs into our kitchen to meet Harold Washington talking to my father. Harold was the Congressman from our district and my father was explaining to him how he could split the white vote and become the first black mayor of the city of Chicago.

My father had been mentoring, encouraging and working with Hariold for 15 years by then and it worked. They won the election and Harold became history. It was a blast back then - watching it all happen.

My father encouraged black politicians to get their piece of the pie - just as I'm encouraging micro-content entrepreneurs to get theirs.

My father never charged for helping anyone out - and it was only until he was 65 did he ever accept a job from anyone he helped. He was one of those idealistic reds.

His father was a famous American Communist and he was raised (as I was) on the notion that one man CAN change the world. Now it's my job to instill that spirit in my children (5 so far.)

Welcoming David Megginson

Welcoming David Megginson 02/05/2005 09:16 PM

Seven years ago when XML-DEV was THE place to be for anyone interested in XML, XML-DEV mailing list members, including me, worked together to create a simple API for XML processing called SAX.  While we did make some mistakes, SAX API was swiftly defined and then adopted.  I have mixed feelings about SAX2 which suffers from the Namespace Curse, but at least I feel better about the SAX API than the DOM API, another standard I participated in creation of.

I would like to give a hearty welcome to David Megginson who led that effort seemingly effortlessly although not without some noteworthy regrets which I agree with. While mild mannered, he took decisive actions when actions were called for and without causing much controversy.

Hullo, David.  Welcome to the neighborhood.

Flickers of David Woodard

Flickers of David Woodard 09/14/2004 11:17 AM
David Pescovitz: Last year, I linked to an Orange County Weekly article about David Woodard, an eccentric artist and musician in Lon Angeles. A friend of William S. Burroughs, Woodard handcrafts Dreamachines, the hallucinogenic flicker device invented by Bryion Gysin and Ian Sommerville and popularized by WSB. New World Disorder has republished an interview with Woodard that first appeared last year in the UK magazine Headpress:
dream_machine2"In college, I found the Dreamachine would cure my own writer's block. When I mentioned this to Burroughs, he concurred. That is the extent of what I know about his use of the machine for that purpose. In 1997, when we were both living in Lawrence, Burroughs tended to use his two Dreamachines together as a postprandial ritual along with a marijuana cigarette. He would write the following morning.

I think the Dreamachine's most distinctive property is its (potentially insidious) subtlety. The machine is similar to absinthe, in that both create a residual language-oriented delirium of which the user tends not to be aware. Fortunately light pulses do not yield the additional effect of Syphilis-like rotted brain stem."
