Dell Sells Samsung Q30 as Latitude X1
03/30/2005 02:03 PM
Dell
surprised me today with the announcement of the Latitude X1
Ultraportable, better known around these parts as the Samsung Q30.
Dell licensed the design from the Korean manufacturer and is selling
it through their site starting at $1,700. It's a fine bit of laptop,
with a 1.1GHz Pentium M, sealed anti-spill keyboard and all the
fixins'. It's not quite as nice looking as the Samsung model with that
dour Dell grey, but who cares? This is a great little laptop for a
very reasonable price. It might even miss the Dell laptop curse, too,
and stand more than 12 months of abuse.

What Dell Support Thinks of Dell
What Dell Support Thinks of Dell
03/30/2005 04:59 PMIn an InfoWorld Gripe Line Blog, anonymous Dell
employees are asked to make their feelings known about working for
Dell. As we all know, Dell moved their tech support to India and they
have employees in other parts of the world now too. It sounds like the
new users dumb questions and working with Windows constant crashing
and errors have driven even the Indian support workers to the brink of
giving up. Here are a few quotes from the above story..
Back about eighteen
months ago, the comments started off pretty apologetic about the Dell
support gripes readers were airing. A poster who said he or she had
just resigned after six months with Dell support in Hyderabad said
that Dell technicians would sometimes know right off that a problem
required a replacement component, "but we are bound by company policy
which prohibits us from dispatching components until we finish the
script given us by Dell management," the poster wrote. "I basically
felt really bad in situations wherein I had to make really old people
open up their computers, and I did in fact meet people on the phone
who would be in tears if we told them that they need to open their
machines.
"I too am working in Dell tech support,"
the poster said, saying his job had been to route calls to the proper
support group. "The great thing is that tomorrow is my last day here.
Great because this by far has been one of the least gratifying and
frustrating positions I have ever held. Yes, there are extensive and
considerable problems with Dell tech support. Their outsourcing to
India is not even the least of them. Every day is a continuous assault
by absolutely clueless and irate customers and an ineffective
phone-based support system that is enough to make anyone crack. I'm
saying that it all sucks: Dell's systems and their support and the
morons who purchase them ... So many times I've had to restrain myself
from telling customers who are whining about what a piece their Dell
is that, hey, guess you should've bought a Mac. Goodbye, Dell!"

03/31/2005 07:35 PMGriffin Technology Inc. on Thursday announced the release of their
AirClick Remote for iPod and iPod mini, a remote control designed, as
you might have guessed, to work with Apple's iPod and iPod mini. The
AirClick Remote is different from most iPod remote controls because it
works using Radio Frequency (RF) technology instead of infrared, so it
doesn't require a line of sight to the iPod and can operate up to 60
feet away, according to Griffin. It's shipping now for US$39.99.

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's
South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new
iPod mini in your pocket?
Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors
iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be
giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have
to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it
to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the
highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many
songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep,
it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

Samsung P777 Released On Cingular
03/17/2005 03:51 AM
Cingular is now exclusively offering the new Samsung P777
(formerly the SGH-P777, I think) as the first in Samsung's new line of
high-speed (EDGE) multimedia phones. The phone features an integrated
MP3 player as well as a camcorder which allows the user to send up to
30 second video clips and to record up to one hour of video onto its
100MB of internal memory. It's a slider design with a 262k color
display and includes an AIM client. The camera features a 4x digital
zoom and an image brightness feature to correct bad shots. Available
now through Cingular for $300 (with a two-year contract).

it a lot more if it were $50 cheaper, a common complaint and one I am
sure Apple will address as for price of those cute Mini harddrives
goes down.
Of particular note is this little tidbit:
In fact, the latest version of iTunes even senses if you have a Mini,
and if your song collection exceeds its capacity, the software can
optionally auto-choose a selection of songs that will fit. It builds
this selection, in part, based on which songs you've played most often
or most recently, and which you've rated highest in iTunes.
This is the first I have heard of this feature, and I must say it is
pretty cool.

-- as two of the devices Mossberg mentions are, for now, for Windows

one particularly interesting feature: a speech-to-text technology that

typing them in. If that works well, that could be a fantastically
useful feature.

guess I shouldn't get too excited--so-called QuickPhrase only
recognizes a list of pre-programmed sayings, like "Will call you

upgrades that greatly expand the number of phrases. I give it 6 months
before the SCH-a890 can understand such SMS standbys as "Sorry, baby,
but I was out drinking with Rob and lost my house keys." If I had a

If you're the type
who dreads being dragged kicking and screaming into the use of a cell
phone, Samsung sells their Long Range Cordless Phone. With an
incredible (for landlines) 30-mile range, the set includes a caller
ID-capable LCD and is able to communicate with the base-station,
acting as an intercom. It includes a car charger and an outdoor
antenna with 50 feet of cable that could very well violate my
Homeowner's Association's CC&Rs. Either way, if you want to use your
landline anywhere in town (mountains and buildings aside) without a
cell phone account, this $300 option from Samsung is one to
consider.
