11/19/2003 11:36 PMThe iSight's overall picture quality was noticeably better than that
of the other cameras. It almost always provided a sharp, crisply

closely matched. The Fire-i had the lowest overall picture quality,
but it made up for this in other areas. By Matthew Honan (Macworld via

Win XP SP2 "turns Firewire 800 into
Firewire 100"
08/12/2004 02:38 PMThe moderator of the RME forum has warned that installing Windows XP
SP2 can lead to the bus speed being limited to 100Mbit/s. Matthias
Carstens posted the message on the RME forum yesterday, but says it's
not a problem particular to RME products. He said: "It affects
any Firewire 800 device. If you have a FW800 PCI card and an FW 800
hard disk, go see the bits come one by one through the Firewire
cable".
RME, he said, was aware of the problem for some time, but "didn't
really imagine that Microsoft would have the guts to try to bury an
existing standard. We just downloaded the final public version and it
is simply unbelievable". He said that some companies are trying
to sell Firewire 800 drivers so everything will be hunky-dory. But, he
said, these drivers probably won't work correctly with a Fireface
800.

Bridge Cable
06/16/2004 08:34 AM
Wow, I didn't even know this
would be possible (although I'm far from a cable signaling expert) --
Japanese peripheral manufacturer Pixela has released a new FireWire to
USB 2.0 cable that allows raw DV (and maybe anything else?) to be
transferred from the FireWire port on video cameras to PCs that only
have USB (or are using the USB for something else). Plus, if you have
Service Pack 2 for Windows XP -- not yet released, mind you -- you'll
be able to transfer data back to the video camera, as well. The bridge
cable is designated the PIX-UVCD/U1W (or 'Sparky') and will ship in
July for around $85.
