Microsoft's Mundie on Longhorn, PDC 10/29/2003 01:39 PM

Microsoft Corp. this week officially started the process of driving interest in its next-version Windows client operating system, code-named Longhorn. The Redmond, Wash., software titan turned its attention to the developer community in the hopes that they will start building a wealth of new applications to run above the operating system. Craig Mundie, Microsoft's chief technology officer, took time to talk to eWEEK Senior Editor Peter Galli from the company's Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles.

Microsoft's Passport to Longhorn

Microsoft's Passport to Longhorn 03/30/2005 01:22 AM
Microsoft will resurrect aspects of its Passport scheme in the upcoming versions of both Internet Explorer and Windows, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. IE7 and Longhorn will utilise technology reminiscent of the much maligned Passport identity management scheme to enable Windows users to give encrypted personal details, including credit card and contact information to businesses and individuals they trust, the report says. Unlike Passport, however, an individual's personal data - to be named 'info cards' - will be stored with them rather than centrally with Microsoft. Passport received its death knell late last year when eBay rejected the technology. It had been criticised since its launch, however, with analyst firm Gartner warning that the technology wasn't secure enough for businesses and financial institutions.

As it preps two Windows server updates for 2005, Microsoft is struggling to find the right balance between making--and delivering on--promises made to customers during their Software Assurance contract periods. In the past six months, Microsoft, Redmond, Wash., has found itself in the awkward position of acknowledging that the long-promised WinFS next-generation file system would have to be cut from the Longhorn upgrade of Windows to guarantee its on-time delivery in 2006.

More recently, Microsoft executives confessed that two key features, Network Access Protection and integrated Digital Rights Management Services, which were supposed to appear in its interim R2 Windows Server 2003 update, will not make it into the 2005 server update after all.

Would You Want To Buy Longhorn Now? 12/02/2003 12:13 AM
It's no secret that plenty of bootleg software shows up in various marketplaces in Asia. Thus, while I'm not at all surprised to hear that Malaysian street vendors are apparently selling bootleg copies of Microsoft's Longhorn OS, I have to wonder who would buy such a thing? Microsoft, of course, isn't known for getting things right on the first shot, but this isn't even the first release of Longhorn, but something that is so far in pre-release mode that I'd be surprised if it really works at all. Longhorn isn't expected to hit the market for a couple of years (note the plural), so I imagine anyone who actually spends money on it at this point is getting something that isn't anywhere near ready for prime time use.
