"Schlotzsky's reports 40 percent of customers consider Wi-Fi and
Web browsing as factor in visiting: As the chain has expanded to 38
company-owned and franchise stores mostly in the South that offer
in-store free computer access and Wi-Fi, their latest market research
shows a significant uptick in awareness.
The company reported that 40 percent of customers surveyed
considered Wi-Fi and computer access a factor in their decision to
come to Schlotzsky's, while 6 percent said Wi-Fi access alone was why
they were there....
But the CEO wasn't a geek; he liked seeing entire families or
sports teams or groups of parents and kids come in and spent time
using the high-speed connection. It's important to recall that a small
but significant minority of Internet users have broadband; for the
rest, Schlotzsky's offering is a profound (and free) pleasure.... [Wi-Fi Networking

This screams libraries to me! We already provide the high-speed
access and the computers, so why is it so difficult for library
directors to understand the benefit of adding wireless to the mix?
Maybe we just need the financial and marketing resources to do
these kinds of surveys and promotions, but then it's a chicken and egg
scenario, isn't it? It doesn't really matter if wireless users are the
chicken or the egg, because they should be library users.

The LinkedIn dilemma
The LinkedIn dilemma12/16/2003 03:01 PM
Here's what stopped me from writing an endorsement for somebody on LinkedIn today: the requirement
to define our relationship as one of these choices:
The same kind of thing stopped me from joining the identity-badge
party at the Digital ID conference recently. I'm bugged by forms that
invite or require me to specify the unspecifiable. Particularly when
Google already knows the subtle truth of the matter. For example, the
signup for nTag asked me to state
my interests. But I already do that all the time. Everything I write
is a statement of my interest in something. Should it be my job to fit
those interests into the Procrustean bed of somebody else's form?

Pakistan Again Poses Dilemma for U.S. (AP)08/09/2004 05:30 AM AP - Pakistan has again proved it is the single-most crucial player in
the war on terror: the site of an al-Qaida ring that was targeting
this country and led to the raising of the terror alert, and the
nation whose cooperation is needed most to make arrests happen.
application/xhtml+xml dilemma
application/xhtml+xml dilemma12/07/2002 03:37 PM I decided that I wanted to serve this site in the type
"application/xhtml+xml", if the user's browser supports it. I figured
out simply how to do this with PHP, and everyone was happy.
if ( strpos ( $_SERVER[ "HTTP_ACCEPT" ] , "application/xhtml+xml" ) )
{
header ( "Content-type: application/xhtml+xml" );
}
Or so I thought. It seems that when I use this code, all of my
wonderful DOM compliant Javascript that brings you recent RSS feeds
stops working. I can't figure out a concrete reason why, but I can
only assume that when a page is interpreted with this content-type, it
no longer is treated as a regular web document, but as strict XML. If
anyone can shed some light on the situation, please e-mail me.

Developer's Dilemma: Perl or PHP?11/08/2002 08:08 AM Speed, quality, price. Pick two. You have no doubt heard that mantra
before, but PHP and Perl offer all three. The question is, how do you
choose between the two programming languages, which are both insanely
popular for Web development?
