06/09/2004 10:55 AMApple Computer Inc. on Wednesday announced three new dual-processor
Power Mac G5 configurations, with the fastest model topping out at
2.5GHz. The new high-end systems miss the 3GHz mark that Apple CEO
Steve Jobs said the company would achieve at last year's Worldwide
Developers Conference, but Tom Boger, Apple's Director of Power Mac
Product Marketing said it came down to a technology challenge that was
bigger than they expected. Boger also said today that users shouldn't
expect to see a PowerBook G5 before the end of the year because of the
challenges of putting the G5 in a small enclosure.

New Laptop
06/16/2004 12:31 AMJust in time for JavaOne, I got me a new Thinkpad R50 laptop (specs

initially considered, but the $200+ price difference just didn't seem
worth it for what (weight aside) is effectively the same machine...

Is That A Laptop Or A Phone?
Is That A Laptop Or A Phone?
02/19/2004 11:28 AMIntel is now pushing computer makers to
build
phones directly into laptops. At first, I wondered why this was
necessary, since it's easy enough to install a softphone - but they're
actually talking about the hardware aspect. The idea is that on the
cover of the laptop, you'd have a screen and phone buttons, and the
system could be used even if the computer was in sleep mode.
Initially, the phone would be a VoIP phone, but they also want to add
cellular service. The screen also will integrate with some email
programs so you could check your email without opening up the
computer. While this certainly has a novelty factor, I wonder how big
a market there really is for such things. Most people who would be
remotely interested in this have a mobile phone already. Are they
really going to be that interested in adding additional phone service
just for their computer? Also, the way this offering is described, it
sounds like it's only really useful if the laptop is closed.
