Pioneer's DVD recorders with TiVo
10/29/2003 01:14 AMWe've been waiting a long, long time this, but we think Pioneer's new
line of TiVo digital video recorders with built-in DVD recorders is
finally out. They're not cheap, but both the DVR-810H (pictured at
right) and the DVR-57H will let you do one thing that isn't possible
with any other TiVo: save TV shows to a DVD-R for archiving or giving
to a friend. The DVR-810H has an 80GB hard drive and can store up to
80 hours of programming, while the DVR-57H has a 120GB hard drive.
Both have superfast DVD recorders that can burn a one hour TV show to
a DVD in as little as three minutes, and come with the new "TiVo
Basic" service which doesn't require any subscription fees. Read

06/09/2004 03:47 PMIn a move aimed at establishing its digital video recorder as the
entertainment hub of the home, TiVo Inc. said Wednesday that home
networking features will now come standard with its devices and
announced that users can now schedule recordings online. Additionally,
TiVo said it is working to allow movies and music from the Internet to
be downloaded to TiVo digital video recorders. The service would give
users another option to get movies on their TV sets, aside from
pay-per-view offered by the cable or satellite provider and the
neighborhood video store. No date has been set for the download
services, a TiVo spokeswoman said.

Friends finale and NBC Tivo-b0rking --
TiVo Strikes Back
05/07/2004 10:49 AMFollowing up on yesterday's post about NBC's apparent attempts to b0rk
potential TiVoers of the Friends finale, BoingBoing reader Douglas
Clark says,
I am a loyal Tivo user and Tivo did send out a
message alert to users about the Friends episode. It was more along
the lines of "if you manually extend the time of a recording, you may
miss the beginning of the friends final episode." I find that Tivo is
pretty good about catching unusual start times and other wonky tricks
the networks play. The previous comment about HUT and ratings was
right on the money...
Link to previous BoingBoing post.
Tech maven Meg Hourihan
adds, "Even weirder is that I got a message on my Tivo warning me that
the finale of Friends would have abnormal times. The message warned
that if I wasn't just using the automatic "start on time" and "end on
time" settings (i.e. I manually set the start time as 8 PM) that I
might miss some. What makes things weirder and worse is that Tivo
still didn't record the whole show! I made sure my settings were what
the message instructed, and happened to watch the show live. Tivo
kicked in to record at 8:59 PM (which is what it listed the start time
as) but stopped at 9:59! According to the time on my digital cable
box, the program didn't end until 10:03 PM. So if I hadn't watched it
live, I would have missed the last four minutes. Seems like a major
screw-up on Tivo's part, especially after sending out that
message!"

Intel and Tivo Team Up on Tivo-to-Go
(But How?)
06/06/2005 12:09 AMReuters is running a story about Intel that is chocked full of goo
info, including information that their 'Manitoba' mobile chipset has
finally found a customer in mmO2 Pic (the Manitoba came out two years
ago, to little fanfare, let alone actual adoption by phone
manufacturers). But the big news is that Intel will be working with
Tivo to provide Tivo-to-Go functionality in future laptop chipsets,
like their popular Centrino.
What that is, though, is unclear. Is it just a branding initiative?
Tivo-to-Go already works on laptops (that's half the point), so will
it be some sort of native support that makes it easier to move the
Tivo content around? We don't know—the article is very
vague—but at least Tivo is getting some name dropping love from
a mega-vendor (considering it was unlikely they were going to get much
help from Microsoft, considering they sell a competing product to
Windows XP Media Center). (Thanks, Pat!)

recorders in Taiwan
01/05/2005 07:12 AMAt the end of 2004, US retail giant Wal-Mart talked with leading
manufacturers of optical disc drives (ODDs) in Taiwan concerning OEM
production of entry-level DVD recorders, according to some
Taiwan-based ODD makers. Wal-Mart wants the players priced at
US$75-80, and all makers involved in the bidding are currently
evaluating the feasibility of bidding on an OEM contract when prices
are this low, according to sources at the makers. The target makers
include Lite-On IT, BenQ, Quanta Storage, Mustek Systems and Protop
Innotech.

08/27/2004 02:02 PMUntil recently, iPods could receive information only from a computer
-- contacts, calendars, and MP3 files all had to be imported. Now the
iPod can be used as a recording device, too, for directly storing and
playing back audio. You're not going to want to record your band's
demo on your iPod, but if you want to capture close-range interviews
or voice memos, the Belkin Voice Recorder for iPod and the Griffin
Technology iTalk iPod Voice Recorder can get the job done. In the end,
though, the Griffin is our pick, thanks to its better sound quality.

Personal Life Recorders and Digital
Lifestyle Aggregators
Personal Life Recorders and Digital
Lifestyle Aggregators
09/13/2004 09:19 AMNick Graydos brings up a good point.
Once we have Personal Life Recorders (PLRs) - we'll need digital lifestyle aggregators (DLAs) to organize all
the crap we collect.
Perhaps the biggest barriers to humans utilizing all the technology
we offer them - is how to get all this stuff digitzed, uploaded, meta
data attached and indexed - before we can utilize it.
PLRs
solve that problem.
But we'll need ways of organizing, keeping track of and backing up
all our stuff - especially as we move from home to work and school and
bop around the world - as well. This all goes along well with the
last post I did on dealing with your digital lifestyle -
currently.
There are other things that require DLAs as well.
Activity based computing for one. Is it a coicidence that Don Norman influenced me on that one as
well?
Clay Shirky calls it Situated
software, but I see a more general era of technology - where the
human no longer has to bend over to adapt to the weird rules and
eccentricities of the software - to use it.
This assumes that the usability issue
is finally understood, that soci
al interfaces are predominant and that DLAs help us pull it all
together.
The PLRs and activity based computing will take us to the next
level.
Here's Nick's post which inspired this outburst.....
USA Today ran an article on MRAM (magentic ram) and its impact PLRs - personal life
recorders.
"Don
Norman speculated about a
Personal
Life Recorder (PLR) type of device back in his 1992 book
"Turn Signals Are The Facial Expression of Automobiles". He
theorized
that these PLR's would start out as a device given to young
children,
called the "Teddy".
The "Teddy" would be given to us as children and record all of our
personal life moments, and as we mature, the data could be
transferred
to new devices that matched out maturity level." [via Smart Mobs]
The holy grail of devices = Storage Capacity + Battery Life +
Device Speed / Responsiveness + Physical Size.
How do you feel about having your life recorded? I'm ready.
Marc Canter has some related ideas that tie into his themes of Digital Lifestyle Aggregation. I really think that
Personal Lifestyle Recorders will
require Digital Lifestyle Aggregators to sift through all of
the data to find the interesting bits.
"What’s a
Digital Lifestyle Aggregator?
Imagine a next
generation MyYahoo
service – which enabled end-users to keep track of their personal
(and
their families) music, photo, video and file collections and provided
them with ‘home publishing’ capabilities to create, store and
distribute their own content. Imagine a social
networking environment which matched and found like-minded people and
enabled them to participate in activities together (both on-line and
in
‘real space’.)...
...Now
imagine all of these capabilities and features in one integrated
environment – focused in on a particular constituency, content brand
or
set of activities. That’s what we call a digital lifestyle
aggregator (DLA.)"
