We recently wrapped up version 2.0 of the Laszlo Presentation
Server. In celebration of the new components, I opened a couple of Cafe
Press stores to special-order some custom Laszlo schwag. It
was a fun excuse to check out Cafe Press. Its an amazing business
where you can create your own T-shirts, mugs or whatever with custom
graphics. The site is very easy to use and I highly recommend it.
So... the stores are open and mugs are sold at cost. I'm posting
links here for Laszlovians, Laszlo developers and other fans.

MUGs get into the swing of things
01/03/2005 09:27 PMWhile the beginning of January tends to be quiet in the overall Mac
community, given the double whammy of the holidays ending and Macworld
Conference & Expo San Francisco looming around the corner,
Macintosh user groups (MUGs) continue to chug forward with their
monthly meetings and special events. In addition to bringing back his
weekly survey question out of its holiday-induced hiatus by asking
about leadership structure, MUG Center editor Chuck Joiner also runs
down this week's scheduled meetings on his Web site.

advantage of by contacting your MUG leader, include discounts on Web

Mugs, microwaves, and Murphy
Mugs, microwaves, and Murphy
02/14/2004 06:43 PMIf you have one of those microwaves with a spinning platter, try this
experiment:
1. Put some water in a mug with a handle.
2. Put the mug in the microwave; run it for a minute or two.
3. When the microwave stops, note the position of the mug handle.
If you’re right-handed, the mug handle will be at about 10
o’clock every time, the most awkward position for picking up a
container of hot liquid.
You can’t reach around it without risking touching the hot mug
with the inside of your wrist or forearm. You have to use your left
hand.
(It’s possible this isn’t universal—it could just be
me this happens to.)

Can The Community Stop Phishing In
Exchange For Coffee Mugs?
01/05/2005 02:19 PMUp until now, it seemed most attempts to use technology to stop
phishing attacks seemed fairly weak. Most seemed to target sites of a
single company, or a small group of companies. However, Netcraft has
come up with an interesting version that basically
gets
the community involved to try to stop phishing. The idea, similar
to the way some have tried to stop spam, is that people can easily
report a site that is designed for phishing, and it goes into the
communal database. It will then be used to alert others who visit
that site with the toolbar. There are mechanisms, of course, to try
to make sure the sites listed actually are phishing sites. Of course,
most people who hear about such a toolbar are probably the type who
know better than to end up on phishing sites anyway. Also, Netcraft
needed incentive to get people to highlight the bad sites, so they're
apparently offering coffee mugs and other tokens of appreciation to
anyone who uncovers a new phishing site. It's unlikely to stop
phishing by itself, but if other, more recognizable, names started to
offer something similar (maybe via a shared database), it would be a
start. Of course, then we'd all just have to wait until the first
mis-classified site filed a lawsuit.

College To Do Away With Fair Use
College To Do Away With Fair Use
12/17/2003 09:34 PMThe latest silliness from our college campuses is this bit of news
from Ithaca College, where they're planning to tell professors that
fair use no longer exists when it comes to course packs
(the photocopied excerpts from various sources that many professors
use to give students short excerpts from a variety of sources). While
most such course packs do involve some approved material, much of it
is often used on a fair-use basis - but university administrators are
afraid of getting sued. Thus, they're going to tell professors that
they need to license every last bit of content they use. This means
that (a) professors will ditch a lot of materials, because they don't
have time to get approval from everyone or because the publisher wants
too much money to include a single paragraph and (b) the course packs
will be much more expensive with less useful stuff for students. In
some cases, professors will simply put the materials on library loan,
where students will go and photocopy it anyway - basically adding an
"annoyance" factor to the process. It's a great lesson we're teaching
the students of today when they don't get to read certain materials
because it's just too damn expensive.

Getting Through College, Thanks To

11/13/2003 05:25 AMThere have been plenty of stories about college kids cheating by
buying or just cutting and pasting
complete
assignments for their classes, but this BBC piece includes a quote
from someone claiming that she basically did that on
every
paper she's turned in throughout college, and is now using the same
cut-and-paste method to finish up her dissertation. Clearly, that's
an outlier example, but it does show how far people will go. The
article includes lots of quotes from people who complain about the
dumbing down of our education system that has allowed this to happen,
but I'm not sure that's the case. Kids have always cheated in school.
This just makes the process easier. Of course, what they don't
mention is that the real punishment is already being handed out to
these kids. They're attending (and in many cases paying quite a bit)
four years of college and not learning a damn thing, because all
they're doing is cutting and pasting.

Tracing ISAPI Extension in IIS 6.0
Tracing ISAPI Extension in IIS 6.0
01/16/2004 01:02 PM
Woo. I just found this gem of an IIS 6.0 feature
while hopping around
for info prior to writing an ISAPI Extension for IIS 6.0.
It's called IIS
6.0 Enterprise Tracing for Windows:
Windows Server 2003 includes Enterprise Tracing for
Windows (ETW), a new
framework for implementing tracing providers that can be used for
debugging and capacity
planning. IIS 6.0 implements a number of providers to trace
key transitions and
the progress that an HTTP request makes as it moves through the IIS
service framework.
These providers include the following:
-
HTTP Service Trace. This provider traces new connections,
new HTTP requests
from a given connection, HTTP kernel cache hits, application
pool routing, and HTTP
request completion.
-
IIS: WWW Server. This provider traces the transition of a
request from HTTP.sys
to the worker process, start and stop events surrounding Common
Gateway Interface
(CGI) requests, and the transition of a request back to HTTP.sys
from the worker process.
This information reveals the type of request that is being
processed.
-
IIS: SSL Filter. This provider traces calls into and out
of the SSL Filter,
which is used for SSL traffic.
-
IIS ISAPI Extension. This provider traces the transition
of a request into
and out of ISAPI extension processing.
-
IIS ASP. Traces the start and completion of the execution
of an ASP request.
These tracing providers allow you to follow a request through all
of its phases. This
information is very useful in the problem isolation phase of
troubleshooting. For
example, ISAPI filters can often cause delays or hangs in HTTP
request processing.
The tracing functionality can help to determine which ISAPI filter
is causing the
delay for a given request.
Nice! It's a bit beastly to use and there isn't a GUI tool to
display the trace
logs prettily so my eyes won't cross, but it's will come in handy
when I find myself
up the creek wearing a blindfold.
