Major Spam ISP Kicks Off Spammers

Major Spam ISP Kicks Off Spammers 09/08/2004 12:32 PM
Apparently, Cable & Wireless US had absolutely no problem giving access to many of the most major spammers out there. Savvis bought C&W US earlier this year, and apparently had a big internal debate about how to handle the spam accounts, which continued to grow until they were hosting 148 of the world's largest spammers (how nice of them). Apparently (as you might expect) some of the execs at Savvis didn't want to do anything about these accounts since they were considered quite profitable. One former Savvis employee wrote up a 200 page report detailing all of the complaints about the spammers, and the executive battle was on. While some continued to insist that the spammers be left alone, executives realizing the potential damage to Savvis' reputation (helped along by a Spamhaus threat to have Savvis customers blacklisted) have apparently convinced the company to shut down the accounts of all 148 major spammers. While it's likely that they'll quickly find new ISPs, shutting off such a major (and well-known) source of network connectivity for spammers has to be seen as a good thing.

Internet to see major strike today?

Internet to see major strike today? 08/27/2004 01:56 PM
Yevgeny Kaspersky, of Kaspersky Labs fame, has raised concerns of a major attack on the internet today. Kaspersky has been widely quoted as saying that there would be a major online attack against Israeli sites today. "Arabic and Hebrew language websites contained an announcement of an 'electronic jihad' against Israel, to start on 26th August 2004".

True? Quite possibly. However, after this news was widely circulated around the web, Kaspersky went on to clarify his comments. He remarked that the true possibility of the threat was 'low', but added that Kaspersky Labs would be raising their online thread level.

He also commented (and raised a very valid point) that if not today, it could be tomorrow that we see an attack. He noted that the many insecurities in the internet’s structure and popular Operating systems meant that it was only a matter of time before online terrorists added 'the internet' to their arsenal of weapons.

Although such a major attack has yet to take place on the internet, a few have come close. Of note, an attack on Akamai, WWW content distributor/cache, did serious damage due to the number of sites hosted with them. Equally damaging was an attack in October 2002 on the Root servers of the internet, that manage DNS. For more information on this kind of attack, read here for an extensive interview with Dave Dittrich.

OKC: Ten years ago today

OKC: Ten years ago today 04/19/2005 08:35 AM
9:02 AM CST 4/19 1995. Ten years ago today. Do you remember where you were when the federal building in Oklahoma City was bombed? It was then the biggest act of mass murder in U.S. history. Shocking to a people una ccustomed to domestic terrorism. What followed was an outpouring of volunteer support and grief for the victims, a manhunt for suspects presumed to be Arabic, and calls for a 'war against terrorism'. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were eventually arrested for, and convicted of the crime, but since McVeigh was put to death in 2001, a steady stream of new evidence has called into question both the government's handling of the investigation and the official version of events. Survivors and victims' family members gather today to remembe r and to reaffirm demands for truth.

The San Francisco Chronical has an observance on the 10th anniversary of the death of Randy Shilts. His second book, And the Band Played On opened my eyes to the AIDS epidemic, as I am sure it did to a lot of straight people. I was amazed to see him pilloried in the gay press as being a traitor to his "kind." My understanding is that this disfavor arose from his assertion that aspects of the hard-won sexual freedom enjoyed by many gay men were also killing them. Anyone want to weigh in on this?

Forty years ago today

Forty years ago today 02/15/2004 02:33 PM
Actually, it was in 1960, four years before the Beatles showed up on Ed Sullivan, that Doug McIlroy published Macro instruction extensions of compiler languages, which appears to be a seminal paper in the literature of metaprogramming. I mention this because a number of folks have responded to last week's item, Programs that write programs, pointing out that Lisp programmers have been there, done that:
"your note about code generation, and the referenced discussions - bits of which i'd already read elsewhere, left me with a really eerie feeling, that i might not be living in the same dimension with you folks. you see, there's a practice of code generation which extends back decades: lisp. code generations is a lisp programmer's bread and butter."
"In the lisp world, they call these macros. The idea is pretty widely known, though not too many languages implement them. Perl 6, and by extension the Parrot interpreter, will include macros, and they will thus be available to any language that gets implemented on top of Parrot (which currently includes Ruby, Python, (maybe) PHP, and, of course, Perl)."

Intense Solar Flare

Intense Solar Flare 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
The largest solar flare of the current solar cycle shot off the sun earlier today. After the media latched on to what was predicted to be mostly a non-event last week (probably due to a NASA article released around the same time about a super spacestorm) , it's not making as much news this time. But you should pay attention this time. This could be the best and last chance for a lot of us farther south to see some auroras before the sun dives into solar minimum, assuming all the variables line up correctly this time. I recommend watching the Solar Terrestrial Dispatch, as it is a great all around resource for solar activity and auroras that includes live data and sightings reports by the general public. Unfortunately though, no doubt as word IS spreading, that site is being hammered again and may be quite slow.
