OS X for Pixar

OS X for Pixar

OS X for Pixar 10/29/2003 11:27 AM

Macworld UK reports that Pixar has moved its Mac and Linux infrastructure of over 1,000 machines to Mac OS X. Automation options in OS X reduced the complications and setup time to just 15 minutes per computer. Pixar chose to wait till key applications required by the company could run on OS X before migrating, and OS 9 will no longer be supported within the company. Pixar's RenderMan Pro Server, software used to create award-winning films such as Finding Nemo, was recently ported to Mac OS X.

Disney aping Pixar, going all-digital

Disney aping Pixar, going all-digital 11/10/2003 11:23 PM
Here's a great Slashdot article and discussion thread about Disney's abandonment of traditional, hand-drawn animation (which Disney has sworn, for years, it would never give up), in favor of 3D, computer-generated work.
Supposedly, all of their animators-- even staunch traditionalists such as Glenn Keane-- are being trained on 3D computer animation techniques. The last hand-drawn high-budget Disney feature scheduled for release is Home on the Range, which is due out next April. It appears that Disney is bowing to the supposed pressures of the market, even though the hand-drawn Lilo and Stitch was considered a success and the all-CG Dinosaur (done at Disney's now-defunct FX house The Secret Lab) was not. However, I believe there's another factor at work: Pixar's contract with Disney is set to expire soon, and the revered CG house has been making their own demands of Disney for the contract's renewal.

migration
10/29/2003 03:24 AM
Despite the company's deep connections to Apple, Pixar Animation Studios only completed moving its computer infrastructure to Mac OS X eight months ago. System administrators Bethany Jane Hanson and Gabriel Benveniste said that they deliberately waited until the vast majority of applications they use daily were OS X native. But once that happened, they and the rest of the administrators at Pixar tapped OS X's core Unix capabilities to develop a migration and maintenance scheme that they say has a lower cost of ownership than Mac OS 9.

Pixar's public announcement that it won't be working with Disney after the end of its current distribution deal hasn't stopped Disney CEO Michael Eisner from holding out hope that the two studios can broker some sort of arrangement. "I will not believe it is over until it is over," he said to investors during a recent Webcast conference, according to Forbes. In late January, Pixar announced that it had ended efforts to extend its seven-picture distribution deal with Disney, which will expire after the companies release "The Incredibles" and "Cars." In announcing the end of the effort, Pixar CEO Steve Jobs said it was "a shame that Disney won't be participating in Pixar's future successes."

Pixar's RenderMan Pro Server, technology used to create Disney's smash hit movie Finding Nemo, is being ported to run on the Macintosh platform. Previous Macintosh computers were considered too underpowered to run the demanding software package, but Apple's newest professional machine, the Power Mac G5, has made the platform attractive for digital video effects production. The latest version of RenderMan Pro Server, version 11.5, will be available for the Macintosh this fall.
