After reading about how awesome "America's Army" is on a linux system (I have RedHat 9), I decided to download all 670 MB of it. MY QUESTION IS THIS: the file is a .RUN file, so how do I install it? Do I just double-click it or what? I never came across a .RUN file before.

America's Army: Special Forces is a free team-based tactical first person shooter published by the US Army and distributed for free over the Internet. The game is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. The new 2.1 version, codenamed "Downrange," is available for download. It incorporates many new features, including a new "Karma Physics Engine" that provides more realistic physics and character animations. Also added in this release is the M136 AT4 anti-tank weapon, a new armored vehicle called the Stryker, a new "Tournament Mode," a new "Demo/Kiosk Mode," two new maps, and many other changes. The full version measures 743MB, but if you have the 2.0a version, a 109MB update patch is available for download instead -- a list of download mirrors is available from the America's Army Web site. System requirements call for a G4/700MHz or faster, 256MB RAM, 1GB of hard drive space, and an ATI Radeon 7500 or Nvidia GeForce2 MX or better graphics system.

Sociologist of News

Sociologist Herbert J. Gans wrote the scholarly classic, Deciding What's News, in 1979. In it, he calls for news from multiple perspectives, which means "reporting all ideas that could resolve issues and help problems, even if the ideas come from ideologically small groups." That would change coverage of politics, the economy, war, and everyday life.

Special Forces SnowGoose Drone

Special Forces SnowGoose Drone 09/22/2004 12:44 PM

snowgoose_flight1.jpg imageI think you can share my dissapointment in realizing that the Marines have not, in fact, developed a parachuting blue whale as a final measure in the War On Krill. Sadly, it's not a whale at all, but instead a SnowGoose, an unmanned cargo drone capable of transporting up to 600 pounds of cargo in up to six separate bays. And since it is propeller-driven and not just passive, the SnowGoose can climb to over 18,000 feet and can steer itself autonomously.

Demolition Team Chrono Reviewed
(Verdict: Beefy)
06/24/2005 04:01 PM

cdface.jpgFriend-of-Gizmodo Scott reviewed his heavy-duty Chase Durer Chronograph, a big, beefy quartz thing that I actually saw on the wrist of Greg Kihn last night. He was one of the contestants of Beat Me Baby One More Time or whatever it's called.

But I digress. This is a quartz chrono with PVD coated body and bracelet. It's water resistant to 1000 feet, meaning you can go diving for the lost treasure of Atlantis. In terms of underwater demolition, however, the watch does not have a remote timer/detonator even though it certainly does look like it should have one.
