Judith is the winner - for sure

Judith is the winner - for sure

Judith is the winner - for sure 06/08/2004 05:02 PM

Yes indeed Judith wins the SocialText Wiki users contest - though I have to say that I spent time WORKING in each of these Wikis - seven days a week!

I'm now up to 6 - now that the Supernova Wiki is up and running again.  Ross forgot to update the rideboard though - that's pretty funny.  Looking for rides in from Dulles.

Tr acking Social Software Across the World Wild Web.

There are soooo many different ways to track news, memes, conversations, chatter, and just plain old noise throughout the blogosphere, the webosphere, and beyond. However, a number of my most successful tracking mechanisms usually lead back to… Google.

According to a Reuters news item—Google Leads Web Search But Challenges Loom -S&P: “Forty-eight percent of search engine users … use Google most overall, compared with 20 percent for Yahoo Inc. ... , 14 percent for Microsoft Corp.’s … MSN and 7 percent for AOL” (survey results courtesy of Standard & Poor’s and InsightExpress).

One of the many tools that I utilize is Google Web Alerts—which notifies me whenever new pages, related to my searching interests, float to the surface of the Googlesphere.

socialtextThis morning—while peeking at the shavings from the Internet iceberg tip that Google continuously mines and deposits into my Gmail account—up popped an old bit on Socialtext.

Back on December 30, 2003, Neil J. Rubenking for PC Magazine rated Socialtext four out of a possible five bullets—making it a PC Magazine “Editors’ Choice” product. (Don’t think I blogged this one.)

PS: Hey Marc Canter—there are 16 entries in “My Workspaces” on Socialtext. Could one possibly be ahead of you in just this one area?:-)

Judith Miller at UC Berkeley

Judith Miller at UC Berkeley 03/19/2005 03:02 AM
David Pescovitz: Last night at UC Berkeley, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Judith Miller discussed journalism and democracy with investigative reporter Lowe ll Bergman (played by Al Pacino in The Insider). In a few weeks, Miller may be behind bars for refusing to reveal confidential sources relating to another reporter's disclosure of a CIA operative's name. Before becoming a possible martyr for the First Amendment though, Miller was known for penning articles in the New York Times supporting claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Whether Miller was tricked by her sources (including members of the Bush administration) or, worse, in cahoots with them is still not clear to her many critics. From Bonnie Powell's coverage of the Berkeley event:
Miller argues that if she was duped by her unnamed sources, so was the Bush administration — and she's not apologizing for believing there were WMDs in Iraq until the president does. "I think I was given information by people who believed the information they were giving the president," she told Bergman. "When the president asked, you know, 'What about this WMD case? Are we sure about this?' [then-CIA director] George Tenet said to him, 'Mr. President, this is a slam dunk.' The people I talked to certainly thought that." Other WMD believers, she said, included the entire U.S. intelligence community as well as French, English, and Israeli agencies. The debate, she claimed, was not over whether Saddam had WMDs, but whether it was worth going to war over them...

Ultimately, Miller said, she "wrote the best assessment that I could based on the information that I had." She attempted to tie the controversy over her WMD reporting to her current struggle by saying that she had heard after the fact — after she returned from being embedded with an infantry division in Iraq — that there had been people who had reservations about the WMD intelligence she was receiving.

"I wish they had come forward at the time to express those reservations," she said. "To me, this case that I am now involved in emphasizes the importance of getting as many people as possible to come forward with a dissenting view, or allegations of wrongdoing."

Judith discovers Tribe Cast

Judith discovers Tribe Cast 07/07/2004 12:55 PM

I got to see Judith Meskill again at Supernova. She's one of the smartest cookies in the social networking scene - giving the 'Many-to-Many' folks a run for the money - literally.

Here's Judith's post of Tribe Cast (which is turning Tribe into a web service.)

Ross Mayfield’s weblog tipped me a while back to Tribecaster.

Looks great in the right hand column Ross.

How many folks still ‘read’ weblogs by visiting them? How many ‘read’ via RSS sans all of the cool thingies in the left and right hand columns of nicely laid out weblogs such as Ross Mayfield’s?

Has anyone else been utilizing this feature of Tribe?

Comments?

Coincidentally, as I clicked through to Ross Mayfield’s weblog today, my ‘image’ appeared at the top of the list of ‘Friends’. I never really expanded my group of so-called friends on Tribe, Ryze, LinkedIn, etc.

My largest group of ‘friends’ is on Orkut—where I am enamoured of the ‘baseball trading cards’ effect of a few full pages of snapshots of those I have met and/or collaborate with online.

JUDITH
MESKILL'S WEBLOG PERFECT PITCH
COMPETITION

JUDITH
MESKILL'S WEBLOG PERFECT PITCH
COMPETITION
05/02/2004 03:29 PM
elevatorJudith Meskill, who simultaneously runs two weblogs (Knowledge Notes and The Social Software Weblog), recently ran a contest to write the Perfect Pitch for weblogs in business. The idea was to write a very short speech (short enough to deliver in a short elevator ride) that would persuade a senior executive of a company to introduce blogs in their company. I was honoured to have been asked to be one of the judges. The winners were Lee LeFever, Randal Moss, Jack Vinson and Michael Angeles. Lee's prize winning pitch was:

First, think about the value of the Wall Street Journal to business leaders. The value it provides is context — the Journal allows readers to see themselves in the context of the financial world each day, which enables more informed decision making.

With this in mind, think about your company as a microcosm of the financial world.  Can your employees see themselves in the context of the whole company? Would more informed decisions be made if employees and leaders had access to internal news sources?

Weblogs serve this need.  By making internal websites simple to update, weblogs allow individuals and teams to maintain online journals that chronicle projects inside the company. These professional journals make it easy to produce and access internal news, providing context to the company — context that can profoundly affect decision making.  In this way, weblogs allow employees and leaders to make more informed decisions through increasing their awareness of internal news and events.

Now the winners get to turn the tables on us judges. This time we (Dina Mehta, Don Park, Flemming Funch, Jim McGee, Lilia Efimova, Martin Dugage, Phil Wolff, Ross Mayfield, Scott Allen, Ton Zijlstra and yours truly) have to write a Perfect Pitch for blogs in business, and the winners get to judge our entries. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I can't tell you my entry because Judith is going to keep the identity of each submission hidden, so that no one is swayed by our awesome reputations in casting their vote ;-)

We have a winner!

We have a winner! 12/22/2004 01:22 AM

As the holiday shopping season comes to a close, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is making headlines for proposed legislation that will penalize retailers for selling titles with violence or other adult content to those under 18. Game.Ars is not impressed.

Although he said his goal was to "help parents," one has to wonder if in the wake of a presidential campaign that was fought on a "values" basis, if this is just political finagling. Whatever the governor’s motivation is, one has to worry about who makes the decisions on what content would be culpable under the ban.

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail 05/21/2004 11:17 AM
An historic monument in central England that may hold the key to the location of the Holy Grail was damaged by vandals on Tuesday. The BBC reports that "a gang of youths climbed on top of The Shepherd's Monument at Shugborough Hall" and started smashing away.
"The Shepherd's Monument is of international importance, both as a work of art and because of the legend that a baffling inscription on the monument provides clues to the true location of the Holy Grail," said the home's general manager Richard Kemp.
Interestingly, the vandalism came on the heels of a visit by former code-breakers from War II intent on cracking the 10-letter puzzle. The Shepherd's Monument is discussed in depth in the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, inspiration for The Da Vinci Code. Link to a National Public Radio piece about the code-breakers. Li nk to the BBC story on the vandalism. (Thanks, Kev!)

Disconnecting The Holy Grail

Disconnecting The Holy Grail 06/30/2004 07:19 PM
Last week, we wrote about the fight for the "triple play" of voice, video and data to the home over a single wide pipe. At the time, I wondered whether or not the cable companies and telcos were a little too focused on the "to the home" part -- and ignoring how wireless might matter. Over at TheFeature, I've tried to explore this idea in further detail and look at how the move to a wireless world may take some of the thunder away from the triple play battle. The triple play is still important, but it may now need to be an anywhere, anytime to any device kind of triple play, rather than a fat pipe connected to your home.

Looking For The Holy Grail In Online

Looking For The Holy Grail In Online
Gaming
05/19/2004 12:03 PM
For all the talk about all of these new online worlds that companies have been rushing out, none have really been living up to a few of the early success like EverQuest. Even then, while there is a strong EverQuest community, it hasn't been as big of a success as some traditional offline video games. While many companies quickly jumped into the space, they're now realizing that they may have hit a wall in growing the market. While new games are trying to appeal to a different market, none have been that successful so far. The problem with most online games is that they're community based and, as such, the community needs to keep playing. That makes it difficult for the "casual" gamer to take part. If they don't login for a few days, they're way behind everyone they were playing with. Meanwhile, there's still the stigma attached to online games of it basically being the online version of nerd camp - taking the old ideas of Dungeons and Dragons and placing them online. This isn't particularly appealing to the less-nerdy set - even in times when being considered a geek isn't quite so bad as it once was. Some are hoping that online sports games may change things - especially since it will involve more time specific games. Sports games have a start and an end, and the world doesn't continue moving all of the time. The games that are simulating a real world have the problem that, just like the real world, they never seem to stop. At this point, it's still quite early to write off the entire space. Someone will come out of nowhere with an online game that doesn't fit into any of these categories and catches on like wildfire. Just like "reality TV" caught on out of nowhere in the TV realm, we'll suddenly have hundreds of online games that no one expected.

You Still Want The Old Files, Right? 04/07/2005 05:31 AM

Like many others, I too have been surprised by this bug in Windows' file explorer, where "replacing a folder" really means "merge the two folders" instead. Thankfully, no files were lost in the process, only a slightly confused human being who was surprised to find old files still lurking inside the folder.
