Big Threats To TiVo: Freevo Is Not Its
Name-o
06/08/2004 02:05 PM

Everyone seems to want to take a shot at TiVo these days. Despite the loyalty of TiVo subscribers, there's no shortage of articles wondering if TiVo can survive. However, among the threats TiVo has to deal with, this review of the various "free" (or cheap) versions of PVR software is probably not what TiVo should be worrying about. Do-it-yourself "TiVo-like" software has been around about as long as TiVo itself. And there are all sorts of devices that could be built for fun or to just avoid licensing fees, but that 0.001% of the population who would, probably doesn't keep TiVo executives up at night.

Reuters - Tired of TiVo's monthly fees and eager for even more control over their television programs, computer enthusiasts are building TV recording devices out of personal computers and new software packages.

Screenshot Freevo is a Linux application that turns a PC with a TV capture card and/or TV-out into a standalone multimedia jukebox/VCR/PVR/HTPC/DVR/set-top box. It uses MPlayer and other apps to play and record audio and video. It is optimized for use with a TV and remote, but can be used with a monitor and keyboard. It is very easy to install since the binary release package has no external dependencies.

Friends finale and NBC Tivo-b0rking --
TiVo Strikes Back

Friends finale and NBC Tivo-b0rking --
TiVo Strikes Back
05/07/2004 10:49 AM
Following up on yesterday's post about NBC's apparent attempts to b0rk potential TiVoers of the Friends finale, BoingBoing reader Douglas Clark says,
I am a loyal Tivo user and Tivo did send out a message alert to users about the Friends episode. It was more along the lines of "if you manually extend the time of a recording, you may miss the beginning of the friends final episode." I find that Tivo is pretty good about catching unusual start times and other wonky tricks the networks play. The previous comment about HUT and ratings was right on the money...
Link to previous BoingBoing post.

Tech maven Meg Hourihan adds, "Even weirder is that I got a message on my Tivo warning me that the finale of Friends would have abnormal times. The message warned that if I wasn't just using the automatic "start on time" and "end on time" settings (i.e. I manually set the start time as 8 PM) that I might miss some. What makes things weirder and worse is that Tivo still didn't record the whole show! I made sure my settings were what the message instructed, and happened to watch the show live. Tivo kicked in to record at 8:59 PM (which is what it listed the start time as) but stopped at 9:59! According to the time on my digital cable box, the program didn't end until 10:03 PM. So if I hadn't watched it live, I would have missed the last four minutes. Seems like a major screw-up on Tivo's part, especially after sending out that message!"

Intel and Tivo Team Up on Tivo-to-Go
(But How?)

Intel and Tivo Team Up on Tivo-to-Go
(But How?)
06/06/2005 12:09 AM

Reuters is running a story about Intel that is chocked full of goo info, including information that their 'Manitoba' mobile chipset has finally found a customer in mmO2 Pic (the Manitoba came out two years ago, to little fanfare, let alone actual adoption by phone manufacturers). But the big news is that Intel will be working with Tivo to provide Tivo-to-Go functionality in future laptop chipsets, like their popular Centrino.

What that is, though, is unclear. Is it just a branding initiative? Tivo-to-Go already works on laptops (that's half the point), so will it be some sort of native support that makes it easier to move the Tivo content around? We don't know—the article is very vague—but at least Tivo is getting some name dropping love from a mega-vendor (considering it was unlikely they were going to get much help from Microsoft, considering they sell a competing product to Windows XP Media Center). (Thanks, Pat!)

Does anyone have an MP3 of the song "Tivo, My Tivo" from the off-Broadway [hit | miss] The Gayest Straight Man Alive? Because I'd really like to hear it. Also, could someone explain what "surprisingly straight" means? Is that, like, no dicks at all? Not even your own? (Thanks, Peter, for the "tip.")

Update: While I'm exploiting the good humor of our readers, do any of you 1) live in Canberra, Australia, and 2) take PayPal? I need to get a few cases of VB delivered to some game developers and am having a surprisingly hard time of it.

TiVo, ReplayTV Make Their Devices Less
Useful

TiVo, ReplayTV Make Their Devices Less
Useful
09/09/2004 02:40 PM
TiVo and ReplayTV have both announced plans to inco rporate copy protection technology in their boxes that would let content providers set content to "expire." The idea is to protect movie makers who are afraid to release movies to PPV channels where they could be recorded by users who then choose not to buy the DVD -- or at least that's the theory. However, as is pointed out in the article, this is a "feature" that makes the device less useful to people. They buy it in order to record stuff to watch it on their schedule, not the broadcasters'. By limiting that, the devices become less useful. Once again, instead of embracing what the technology can do to get more people to watch their content, they're taking a backwards step, making their content less useful. While TiVo and Replay will claim they need to do this, that's not true. If they're smart, others will come along, refusing to take away features from customers.

TiVo and ReplayTV give in to Hollywood 09/09/2004 11:02 AM

Based upon the story I have just read I will predict the demise of these two companies within 2 years. It seems they have agreed to implement changes that would embed code in their machines that would limit the amount of time you can store a pay for view movie and limit how often that movie can be watched.

All I can say is they are a bunch of idiots. [Sili con Valley Mercury News]

With ReplayTV out of the picture,
Studios turn on TiVo

With ReplayTV out of the picture,
Studios turn on TiVo
07/23/2004 04:46 AM
TiVo's strategy has always been to play nice with the movie studios. While SonicBlue was shipping the Replay with automated commercial skipping and show-sharing, TiVo was adding DRM-based systems for cautiously moving programming around your house and only your house. It worked -- sorta. Replay got sued into oblivion, and TiVo was left standing.

But now that the studios have chased the TiVo competitors out of the market, they're turning on their pet PVR. TiVo wants to deliver a product that will allow you to share your programming among no more than 10 sets -- this isn't the indiscriminate sharing that the Broadcast Flag advocates said they feared: this is heaily DRMed, controlled and modest sharing.

And the Studios and the NFL don't like it. So they're demanding that FCC order TiVo to disable this feature. Link

DirecTV helps TiVo... but not TiVo users. While CNET reports that TiVo's partnership with DirecTV has driven subs up to the 1 million mark, my poor DirecTiVo satellite/DVR combo is orphaned sans the Home Media Option and any of the cool new software features (e.g. folders)--and, indeed, any software updates to speak of--appearing on the standalone Tivo boxes. The Web-based recording and ability to stream audio from my MP3 store to my hifi via TiVo were the very reasons I upgraded to a Series 2 TiVo. Sure is nice to see TiVo doing so well though; mind you, I do mean that--this particular beef is with DirecTV.
