05/25/2004 01:12 PMToshiba's Digital Products Division (DPD) has introduced the TDP-S20U
and TDP-SW20U, two new Digital Light Processor (DLP)-based projectors
aimed at mobile users, educators and small to medium businesses. Both
projectors sport 1,400 ANSI lumens, 2000:1 contrast ratio and native
SVGA 800x600 pixel resolution. Supported input sources include
composite, S-Video and component RGB. The TDP-SW20U can also
communicate of wireless networks using the IEEE 802.11b standard. Both
systems will be available in June; the TDP-S20U will cost US$999 and
the TDP-S20U will cost $1,199. Toshiba's Web site did not appear to

09/27/2004 06:36 AM
Toshiba has announced new models in its Gigabeat
series of hard disk-based MP3 players, including the new F models that
come in sizes up to 60GB with a 2.2-inch color LCD screen. These
players use 1.8-inch hard drives, as well, so we are definitely
talking iPod-sized devices. It's a shame that Toshiba doesn't really
promote the Gigabeat here, as I'd expect they'd sell like hotcakes, or
perhaps sell like 60GB hard disk-players with huge color screens.
Battery life is projected at 11 hours, and Toshiba also offers an
optional wireless link that lets you connect to a Gigabeat in its
cradle over Wi-Fi from multiple computers.

08/04/2004 10:03 AMToshiba Corp. will begin
mass-producing a 60GB, 1.8-inch hard-disk drive before the end of the
year, it said Wednesday. Such drives are commonly used in digital
music players and sub-notebook computers. The new drive offers a
50-percent improvement in storage space over Toshiba's current highest
capacity 1.8-inch hard-disk drive yet manages this without being
physically larger. The major factor that contributed to this increase
was an advancement made in a thin-film technology used for both the
head and platter, said Midori Suzuki, a spokeswoman for Toshiba in
Tokyo.

Two New Value Projectors from Epson:
PowerLite 81p and 61p
06/03/2004 01:35 PMEpson has added two new
projectors to its low-end "Value Series," the PowerLite 81p (with a
native XGA resolution of 1,024 x 768 and pictured right) for $1,800
and the 61p (with a native SVGA 800 x 600 resolution) for $1,500 that
should be available around the 20th of this month. The standout
feature? A 'blackboard mode' that enables the projectors to detect the
color of the surface they are displaying on (let the old school green
blackboards (did I just use 'old school' in proper context?)) and
adjusts their color output to compensate. I'd like to see that in
person. In addition both share a 2,000 lumen brightness rating and
quiet fans.

of these in an in-flight magazine. Having a projector on the network
lets you apparently connect to it and debug it remotely. But the
really cool thing is --
Some [network-enabled projectors] also have the ability to access
and deliver content (documents, spreadsheets, and presentations) from
a computer on the network directly to the projector.

from Panasonic: the TH-LB30NT and TH-LB20NT. Varying only in Lumens,
where the 30NT has 3,000 and the 20NT has 2,000, both projectors
support IEEE 802.11g connections. Equipped with a 1024 x 768 LCD, the
30NT and 20NT feature two D-sub inputs, an S-video input and a
Composite input. Because of the 802.11gness (instead of bness), video
files can be played on them too. Finally, a function called "Daylight
View" to automatically adjust brightness and such for using the
projector in bright rooms. They're a tad expensive for my tastes at
hundreds of thousands of yen, but for that matter, all projectors
are.

Epson PowerLite 740c and 745c Projectors
08/31/2004 03:07 PMI've been in the market for a cheap projector for a
while - an ex-roommate had an Infocus X1, and for the price I haven't
found a better one - but seeing new projectors hitting the market like
these new Epson PowerLites (740c and 745c, pictured) almost make me
want to wait and save up the only $3,000 they cost to bring them home.
It might be a lot of money compared to an X1, let's say, but when you
get built-in 802.11g Wi-Fi, USB flash drive support, on-board MPEG2
decoding, and XGA resolution. Of course, they aren't designed for home
entertainment, necessarily, but being able to free the projector from
my PC would be pretty great.
If, of course, I didn't live in an apartment so small I can connect
everything with six-foot cables.

Tiny Projectors: Hologram and Lasers,
Not Smoke and Mirrors
Tiny Projectors: Hologram and Lasers,
Not Smoke and Mirrors
06/30/2004 12:37 PM
Researchers from Cambridge and Light Blue Optics,
Ltd. have developed a prototype pocket-sized, battery-powered video
projector -- or at least the technology that should, in the mythical
two to five years, lead to one. The trick is a total lack of lenses or
light bulbs, but instead to display a two-dimensional hologram on a
microdisplay then shine a laser through it, which scatters the light
into a larger, projected picture. Projectors are great -- I'm about to
pick up a cheap one, myself. If they could slip these into cellphones
or PDAs, there would be no need for roll-up screens or dorky
mirrorshade HUDs at all. All you'd need is a clean wall and a total
blotting out of the star we call our sun.

Cometa and Toshiba: And Then There Was
One
Cometa and Toshiba: And Then There Was
One
04/20/2004 02:01 PMWith tiny scattered networks and the loss of McDonald's, Toshiba's
SurfHere locations fold into Cometa Networks: As rumors surfaced a few
weeks ago about a reduction in force at Toshiba's SurfHere division
coupled with the inevitable reason--McDonald's had already informed
them that Wayport would be their anointed partner--Toshiba is
essentially exiting their poorly formulated and executed hotspot
strategy. While Toshiba couldn't gain traction on its turnkey hotspot
offering, Cometa gains the ability to include "some or all"--as the
press release puts it--of SurfHere's hundreds of locations. Reading
between the lines, they can cherry pick outlets that make sense to
Cometa's mission. Cometa's current count of hotspots in their
directory is about 100 excluding the McDonald's that will be taken
over by Wayport. The Barnes & Noble deal, a year in the making, will
eventually add 500 locations in the U.S. to Cometa's list. Toshiba is
a massive computer manufacturer, however, and the press release
pledges their involvement in promoting Cometa Networks' hotspots. A
tricky affair, since Cometa has long said that they weren't branding
their hotspots, but rather pushing through resale to brands like cell
operators. Publicly held companies rarely like to admit defeat as it
can open them up to shareholder lawsuits and stock drops. But the
press release pushes a little too hard. "Having helped stimulate the
emerging hotspot industry, we believe we can best continue with the
strategic intent of the SurfHere Network through this alliance with
Cometa Networks," says Chris Harrington, vice president, strategy and
business development for Toshiba's American operations. Out of between
8,000 and 10,000 current U.S. hotspots a handful of locations
scattered around the country were Toshiba locations. They had no major
initiatives. They came late to the party. They secured no chains of
stores or major venues. They had, let's be honest, an almost (but not
quite) zero effect on the emerging hotspot industry except to show
that at the end of the day you can fire hotspots out of a gun and hope
they stick....

Mitsubishi LVP-XD450 Projector
08/04/2004 07:49 AM
If a DLP (digital light processing) projector is your
cup of tea, Mitsubishi's announcement of the "LVP-XD450" should be
your cup of coffee. According to Mitsubishi, this new projector has
the industry's highest brightness and contrast ratio (2,600 Lumens and
2,200:1 respectively; don't know about "highest," but that is pretty
good). And since the projectors are rated at screens up to 200-inch, I
would be fully willing to review one of these units for anyone who has
one on hand, provided you also supply the screen. I doubt my computer
could actually run Doom III at this projector's 1280 x 1024
resolution, but Pinkydemons would still be life-sized.

09/21/2004 12:27 PM
Despite the occasional interesting anomaly, games on
mobile phones have been fairly lackluster. That's not really the fault
of the game producers as much as it has been the platforms themselves,
I think - nobody wants to spend a few tens of thousands of dollars on
a game that can only be run on a single model of handset (unless
they're getting some nice subsidies from the handset maker, of
course).
I do have to wonder, though, if maybe the future of phone gaming
isn't platform compatibility (like the various Java flavors that
should work as standards, but often don't) but instead
something more akin to the PC game space, where gamers start driving
the inclusion of their preferred 3D hardware into handsets, and phones
because "Nvidia phones" or "ATI Enabled."

$230 the new AIPTEK PocketDV 4100 looks like a fun diversion, with a
4-megapixel sensor and a 1.8-inch color LCD screen. Keep in mind that
the 4100 doesn't use tapes. Instead, it has a Compact Flash slot that
supports, well, as much Compact Flash as you can afford. I suspect
that the 4-megapixel sensor is actually 4-megapixel this time, instead
of the 2-megapixel CCD that's in the SD-card-based PocketDV 4500 that
is just interpolated up to 4-megapixel. (Thanks, Mike!)

3D gaming
and cellular phones have remained separate for some time now. I think
the only "solutions" I've seen are related to Java. [Things like
J2ME, for instance. - ed]
Now Mitsubishi, famous for the Japanese Zero and teenager-aimed car
advertisements has created a fully OpenGL ES Ver. 1.0 software library
for phones that runs under the company's Z3D3 engine. The combination
of this graphics engine and software library allows for up to 1
million polygons per second to be processed. Just for comparison, a
modern-but-not-insane PC video card like the Radeon 9800 can do 380
million polygons at a time. But hey, it's a phone, what do you expect?
