The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam
The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam
08/06/2004 04:41 PMAaron writes in to point us to a story at Broadband Reports
about a
scam
claiming to offer "free" broadband, when the truth is anything but
that. The company in question is really just offering one of those
silly web "accelerator" tools that speed up some dialup web surfing by
caching images and using some compression. It's not really broadband
at all, though if you're stuck on dialup, apparently it helps. It's
also not free at all, since it's a typical pyramid scam, where you
need to get others to sign up first. Since they know otherwise
intelligent people will know it's a scam, the site doesn't make
outrageous claims on their home page, but leaves those only for those
who come via a referral code (which is all part of the scam) at which
point they start making outlandish claims anyone with a bit of
broadband knowledge would know were false.

Time To Back Up Your Back Ups
09/01/2004 06:24 AMWasn't Jack Valenti just telling us that
DVDs
last forever? Maybe not. As many people are now learning,
digital media has a pretty rapid decay rate. The latest to discover
this was a reporter who, five years ago or so, had fallen for that old
(har har) "paperless office" gag that has been pulled before. He
bought a CD-RW and scanned in all sorts of stuff (including photos and
old articles he'd written) -- and then made the fatal mistake: he
tossed out the original copies. Glad to have the filing space back,
he proceeded to shove the CDs on a shelf somewhere and forget about
them for years... until now. Partly out of curiosity, he pulled out
these backup CDs, put them in his CD drive and
discovered the wonders of Windows error messages. He
begins to wonder (uh oh) what will this mean for all the CDs and DVDs
he's been paying good money for over the years. It would be nice if
he could back them all up, perhaps multiple times to various different
storage media, but the entertainment industry isn't real keen on that
idea, seeing as they're actively
stompin
g out those who try to help you save your own digital files.

The first post describes the crazily harrowing landing you have to
endure when you fly into Baghdad, as the plane corkscrews down to
avoid shoulder-mounted missiles:"
After a normal flight, we went into a tight, corkscrew
dive that sent your stomach up into your throat and in the case
of two passengers, out their mouths and into their laps. Its a
vomit-comet experience. But if you like roller coasters in a sealed

fun. Just dont think about the very real threat of
shoulder-mounted SAMs.

Here Come The Broadband Tiers
Here Come The Broadband Tiers
01/22/2004 02:06 PMFor years, US broadband ISPs have been talking about the possibility
of offering tiered services, and have even experimented with different
offerings. However, they've seemed afraid to go to a fully tiered
model, because they feared a backlash from users. A new study
suggests, though, that
the
backlash might not be all that big. It will, of course, be bigger
among those who are the most likely to feel the impact of slower or
capped service - but, otherwise, most people won't complain. The
article suggests that the broadband providers should not set up tiers
for existing users, but just create new "intro" plans to try to
convince dialup users to move to broadband, without pissing off
existing customers. Of course, some would point out that many
broadband providers
alrea
dy have a usage cap - they just don't tell anyone what it is.

Welcome To Big Brother Island
05/04/2004 01:40 PMWired News is talking about a tourist island in Maine that is being
blankete
d with security cameras, motion detectors and sensors all tied
back into a computer with some artificial intelligence to keep out the
"bad people." Yes, it sounds like the pitch for a bad movie combining
sci-fi with reality television ("Dave. You've been electronically
voted off the island. Dave."). The folks behind the project,
however, claim that privacy is a "two way street," suggesting that
sure, you're being monitored by a computer, but at least it means
you'll feel safe that you're not being stalked by a rapist. The
system is designed to recognize regular "good" visitors to the island
and let them on without any problems. However, the "bad" people who
dare to sneak up via kayak will be shot on sight (well, maybe not that
drastic...). Still, as a last ditch effort to ward off complaints,
the folks behind the project say that, if anything, they're helping to
bring up discussion issues around surveillance and privacy rights.

Big Brother goes to the Olympics
08/13/2004 10:37 AMNew Scientist has an article looking at the US$312 million
surveillance system installed for the 2004 Olympics in Athens. The
eyes and ears consist of 1,000 high-res and infrared videocameras
peppering the city. Cell and landline telephone calls are being
recorded, converted into text, and "scanned for phrases that could be
linked to terrorist activity." The software's developers say it speaks
Greek, English, Arabic, Farsi, and other major languages.
(John Pike, an analyst with the defence think-tank Global
Security) believes other undisclosed measures are undoubtedly in
place, such as face recognition from video footage. He says such
surveillance technology has already proven its worth in intelligence
gathering. "They're basically the sort of stuff the National Security
Agency has been using for some time," he told New Scientist. "And they
seem to place great faith in it."
The human security is massive as well--there are seven security people
for every athlete.
