washingtonpost.com - A poor kid in the America that Ronald Reagan extolled could end up a movie star, a millionaire, president of the United States -- or, in his case, all three. That storybook life turned its last page yesterday with a funeral fit for a king.

Why Apple's Airport Express May
Unofficially Extend Non-Airport Networks
06/07/2004 05:15 PM

Even though Apple is claiming on their website that the new Airport Express can only act as a network range extender (signal repeater) with other Airport devices (look at the bottom of this page), WiFi Networking News's Glenn Fleishman explains why the Airport Express may just work with some non-Apple devices after all:

Good things, bad things

Good things, bad things 03/06/2004 02:03 AM
Good thing: to have surge protection on your computer array.
Bad thing: kick accidentally the surge protection thingy so that the wall socket becomes loose, and have a big, catastrophic power failure.

Good thing: to be able to read your blogs while eating breakfast
Bad thing: to drop a bun in your cereal, and have milk splashed all across your laptop

Good thing: iTunes for Windows
Bad thing: Windows

Good thing: actually having sunlight in the mornings.
Bad thing: the mornings.

Good thing: upcoming go -tournament (http://takapotku.suomigo.net - feel free to come by and say hi!) next weekend.
Bad thing: not sleeping enough before the weekend.

really, really stupid things

Jack Valenti says stupid things --
really, really stupid things
08/03/2004 07:46 PM
Tim Wu has rounded up some of the dumbest things that Jack Valenti said -- and he's found some real howlers, things that make Jack's infamous condemnation of the VCR ("the Boston Stranger of the American film industry") look like a walk in the park.
On the nascent cable industry, in 1974
"[Cable will become] a huge parasite in the marketplace, feeding and fattening itself off of local television stations and copyright owners of copyrighted material. We do not like it because we think it wrong and unfair."

On the dangers on media concentration, 1984 Op-Ed
"Will a democratic society allow just three corporate entities to wield unprecedented dominion over television, the most decisive voice in the land? There are now only three national networks .... There will never be more than three national networks."

On the public domain, 1995
"A public domain work is an orphan. No one is responsible for its life. But everyone exploits its use, until that time certain when it becomes soiled and haggard, barren of its previous virtues. How does the consumer benefit from the steady decline of a film's quality?"

Where's My Flying Car?

Where's My Flying Car? 11/17/2003 07:51 PM
It's been decades since people have suggested that everyone would have a flying car or a personal jetpack. There are any number of "flying" technologies that futurists expected to be commonplace by the new millennium, and here we are a few years in and we're still pretty firmly grounded. MSNBC is looking at seven "promised" flying technologies that still haven't come home - from flying cars to personal jetpacks to regular supersonic commercial air travel (bye bye Concorde) to space tourism. Some of these may come true eventually, but they've all been talked about for years, and we don't seem that much closer.

It's Official - the future sucks. Why has the future been such a let down? It's more 1984 than Barbarella. If we can have ID cards and video surveillance, then why can't we have intergalactic flying cars and hot chicks in skimpy plastic outfits? Clearly I'm not the only one wondering where all the cool stuff went - check out RetroFuture

Bob wants to put WiFi in the Sky. “So here’s my plan for really cheap aerial Internet service. I’m preparing a number of experiments using a Linksys WRT54GS 802.11g router mounted on the roof of my house in Charleston, SC. The router is running Sveasoft firmware that gives me direct control of transmitter power if needed. I’ll be testing it with a variety of antennas, mainly omnidirectional but perhaps I’ll try a sector antenna, too. The other end of the wireless connection will be a second WRT54GS mounted in my funky homebuilt airplane. Operating the pair of routers as an Ethernet-to-Ethernet bridge will give me much higher performance than I could ever expect from just using a WiFi card in my notebook computer. And I’ll be testing a variety of antennas on the belly of my funky airplane, too.”

I'm flying Patricia up there, she's making a rare appearance in support of her company "LaPaay" who've been at the jaarbeurs convention for most of the week. The trip is especially fun for me as I'll be second in command of the King Air we're flying. I hope to send some moblog postings during the trip!

Flying Updates 12/21/2003 02:31 AM
I just realized that I've been remiss in updating my flying blog. I hadn't touched it at all during the month of December. After spending a bit of quality time with my log book and re-reading some of the recent club e-mail, I've added about five new entries. They cover everything from my DG-1000 checkout (and loops) to some scenic flying on the Wright Brother's 100th Anniversary earlier this week (pictures). It's been a good month of flying so...
