Retro Gadget Tuesday: The Autopen

Retro Gadget Tuesday: The Autopen 06/08/2004 10:24 AM

autopen_m80.jpg imageSo while everyone knows, or should know, that most celebrity autographs out there are fakes, who knew that there is such a history of gadgetry designed for the purpose. Thomas Jefferson invented a machine he dubbed the 'polygraph' (no relation) which was a pen attached to a jury-rigged get up attached to other pens, sort of a fancy colonial version of those autosigner toys you could make with Tinker Toys as a kid, that allowed him to sign multiple documents at once -- meaning even your John Hancock autograph could theoretically be a dupe.

More, plus links, after the jump.

get_reel.jpg image

These aren't retro gadgets, exactly, but that doesn't make them less tubular, or alternately, wicked. These Get Reel CD-ROMs from Bass Boy pack tons of interactive data about reel-to-reel tape recorders from as far back as 1940 to as recently as 1977, with thousands of pictures, circuit diagrams, owners manuals, vintage advertisements, and more. The first two CDs cover a variety of players, while the last focuses on the Tandberg series of tape recorders. Each CD is available for around $33, shipped.

Steve Schoenherr tells a great story, too, when he details (in the second link) how Bing Crosby himself adopted the reel-to-reel technology to pre-record his own shows, leading to the first edited radio broadcasts and the first laugh tracks, and eventually mutated to become videotape.

Autopen

Autopen 06/06/2004 12:11 AM
Is the autograph real? Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and of course Ronald Reagan have used it - the Autopen - a machine which signs an autograph in the celebrity's handwriting. It was developed in the early part of this century but only became popular in the late 1940's. Learn more at Stephen Beck's Autograph Pages

Autopen: mechanical signature storage
and reproduction

The Autopen is a wicked vintage gadget that lets you store your signature as a series of mechanical cues for a multifariously branched mechanical armature. Gizmodo has a killer post on it, with old pop-sci articles on the forthcoming age of the autopen. Lots of online info revolves around how to tell if your collectable souvenir signature came off an autopen or an original signature.
The most useful one, though, is the Autopen, made by International Autopen Co. of Sterling, VA., a popular device that is apparently still in use (the Republic National Committee bought one just this year). The Autopen is loaded with special metal 'matrix' -- basically a traced pattern of the signature -- that can be used again and again, even if the signer isn't there. Even better, owners of Autopens can purchase signature matrices through the mail from third parties, duplicating any autograph at will. Current models of the Autopen weigh around 100lbs, run off regular power, and can use real pens and pencils (although they work better with Sharpies, due to the fixed width of the pen looking less off when done with marker).

Pokia: Retro Handsets

Pokia: Retro Handsets 07/08/2004 12:29 PM

pokia.jpg
imageThe Times -- the Home & Garden section, of course, not Circuits -- has an article about those Pokia handsets, the retrofitted old-style phones that occasionally show up for sale on eBay. More art pieces than products, the idea behind Pokia, says creator Nicolas Roope, is to challenge the mobile industry to free themselves from the sci-fi styling rut and start taking more aesthetic chances with the form factors of our phones. It's a cute hack -- although I doubt there's a burgeoning trend in it -- and I have to say I agree with the general sentiment. Who wouldn't like to see a phone made out of wood, or copper, or meat?

Roope has even created a special edition Pokia to take advantage of the publicity commemorate The Times' profile.

Retro Nintendo Watches

Retro Nintendo Watches 06/06/2005 12:09 AM

Nintendowatch_250-2.jpgSome of my favorite childhood memories involved these big jars of tamales that my dad would buy and that I'd make and eat in bulk coupled with a few minutes of LCD gaming goodness on my old Pac Man watch. As a result, I was a pretty fat kid. Well, I can relive those artery clogging days with these retro watches feature 'tenda favorites like Donkey Kong, Zelda, and G.I. Joe (?). As a rule, these things last about five days before something cracks and then you're out of luck, but it's nice to recapture those low-fi days of yore in these trying times.

Plus, we like anything that shows a little pale belly skin.

synthiaks.jpg imageIn 1971 EMS (Electronic Music Studios) released two versions of this portable three-oscillator synthesizer, the Synthi A and the AKS (pictured). Both were miniaturized repackagings of EMS's earlier VCS3 unit, but the AKS took things a step further with its included monophonic digital sequencer and 30-note touch pad keyboard. The bit that looks like a Battleship grid in the middle is actually used to route signal to various parts of the unit by sticking pins in the appropriate holes.

Mark Frauenfelder: jaroindex My friend Scott has been telling me to check out a new subscription-based website published by Shane Glines. Glines is an animation character designer and one of my favorite illustrators. He worked for Spumco (the studio that made Ren & Stimpy) and on the Batman animated series.

Glines describes his new site, Cartoon Retro, as being "devoted to celebrating and exploring the largely forgotten work of great artists, cartoonists, illustrators, photographers, filmmakers, actors, musicians and industrial designers from what, in my opinion, was the peak of American culture: approximately 1925 through 1939." In addition, Shane posts some of his own work on the site, too

I just signed-up, and am blown away with all the great stuff available. If you are at all interested in the art from this era (like I am), the $5 / month fee is well worth it. I hope enough people sign up to convince him to keep up the great work. Link
