Water to Boost Satellite Snooping

Water to Boost Satellite Snooping

Water to Boost Satellite Snooping 06/08/2004 05:46 AM

Orbiting spy satellites have an annoying habit of running out of fuel and burning up in the atmosphere, so Darpa is looking for a way to make them last longer and move better. The key might be water. By John Gartner.

But There's No Water in Phoenix... 04/07/2005 09:28 AM

La Vida Robot: My buddy Matt tipped me off to these kids. They built an underwater robot that whipped a team from M.I.T. in the Marine Advanced Technology Underwater ROV CHampionship. Not only are they in high school, but they're undocumented immigrants to boot. As such, they couldn't qualify for the financial aid to even attend a place like M.I.T.

Across campus, in a second-floor windowless room, four students huddle around an odd, 3-foot-tall frame constructed of PVC pipe. They have equipped it with propellers, cameras, lights, a laser, depth detectors, pumps, an underwater microphone, and an articulated pincer. At the top sits a black, waterproof briefcase containing a nest of hacked processors, minuscule fans, and LEDs. It's a cheap but astoundingly functional underwater robot capable of recording sonar pings and retrieving objects 50 feet below the surface.

The four teenagers who built it are all undocumented Mexican immigrants who came to this country through tunnels or hidden in the backseats of cars. They live in sheds and rooms without electricity. But over three days last summer, these kids from the desert proved they are among the smartest young underwater engineers in the country.

water birth 12/22/2003 03:04 PM
Water birth is an alternative to standard hospital labor where the woman gives birth in a pool of water. Many hospitals/birth centers now offer the option of a water birth, or the mother-to-be can choose from a wide variety of birthing pools for labor at home, usually assisted by a midwife/nurse with experience in waterbirth. There are many benefits of a gentle introduction to the world by being born in water, and the testimonials make it sound like a great option. Note: some links may be NSFW. [more inside]

CMU Water Strider Robot

CMU Water Strider Robot 09/13/2004 10:48 AM
The Swirling Brain and lots of our other readers have submitted stories about CMU's new robot that can walk on water. The tiny robot is light enough that it doesn't break the surface tension of the water, allowing it to walk on water in the same way as Water Skimmers (aka Jesus Bugs). For more on the Water Strider robot see the stories in Wired News, Forbes, and Slashdot. The CMU robot is similar to the MIT Robostrider robot we reported on last year.

Strider Robot Walks on Water

Strider Robot Walks on Water 09/10/2004 09:26 AM

strider.jpg imageCarnegie Mellon's NanoRobotics Lab has created a robot prototype so lightweight that it doesn't break the surface tension of water, enabling it to stand and manuever on top of it. Stand on the water, that is. I think the best part isn't just that they built one, but that according to the article the mechanism that insects like water striders use to walk on water wasn't even discovered until last year. Their secret? They're just really, really light.

The carafe of water

The carafe of water 04/18/2005 09:53 AM
One of the eternal questions that plagues me here in Paris is the question of the carafe of water. Why is it that every time I order une carafe de l'eau I stand a roughly 30% chance of getting it? And why is it that whenever a French person seems to order absolutely anything -- even just a tiny coffee -- they seem to get a liter of water alongside? Why? My food comes. My wine comes. But hardly ever do I get the water without repeating my request several times. I am now practicing how to say, "Monsieur, I am dying of thirst. The carafe, please!" in French. Is this some secret way for the French to stick it to me while still being polite?
