Wireless Security On The Hardware Side

Wireless Security On The Hardware Side 06/21/2004 12:39 PM
While there have been a number of recent stories about WiFi security offered as a service, it looks like the hardware folks are getting back into the game. Infoworld is taking a look at two different new hardware-based methods to secure your WiFi surfing. One is the encrypted USB keychain from Red Cannon that got a lot of attention a few weeks ago. That's really designed to be useful if you're using someone else's (or just a public) computer and don't trust it. However, the more interesting device is a new WiFi card from Seclarity that apparently runs Unix (no details are given, and the Seclarity site doesn't seem particularly forthcoming on this) and encrypts all data before it leaves the computer. While more details would be nice, this certainly looks like it could be a viable alternative to software based security options that are available now. If automatically encrypting WiFi cards became more popular, it would seriously cut down WiFi security problems.

Apple moving to Intel CPUs? Macs no,

Lots of rumors and talk. With both the Playstation 3 and the new XBox using PowerPC (or POWER-derived) chips, wouldn't you think staying with PowerPC is a pretty safe bet for now. Anyway, what I wanted to say is... All the stories are missing the obvious: iPod's are using ARM processors. Maybe Apple wants to use Intel processors for them instead. Intel makes the XScale MIPS processors used in some Palm devices, cell phones, GPSes etc. update: mariuz points out...

06/22/2005 02:18 AM
Apple has officially discontinued its single processor Power Mac G5 in order to push sales of its dual processor lineup. The single processor models are no longer available for purchase on Apple's website, but the company said in a statement that the remaining models at authorized resellers will be available while supplies last.

"The 1.8 GHz Power Mac G5 is no longer available at the online Apple Store but is available in other channels while supplies last. The Power Mac G5 line is now all dual processor and delivers the ultimate in performance for our most advanced customers."

The final single processor model from Apple was the 1.8GHz G5. Available models now include the 2GHz, 2.3GHz, and 2.7GHz dual processor models. For a single processor alternative Apple has recommended prospective buyers have a look at the iMac G5.

May hardware sales see Apple as big
winner
06/24/2005 07:36 PM
Credit Suisse First Boston reiterated a "market weight" rating on the PC hardware industry after The NPD Group released May retail and distribution data for the United States, reports Forbes. The month represented the first material slowdown for PC shipments in over a year with a 6% year-over-year growth, with notebook sales increasing and desktop sales falling. "From a vendor perspective, Apple Computer was the big winner, growing units 79% year-over-year overall and 94% year-over-year in standalone retail," the research firm said. "The strength in retail year to date has been somewhat unexpected to us given the consumer strength over the past two years, along with slowing macro economic trends. However, it is important not to overanalyze NPD's shipment information, as this is not the first time units have slowed before immediately recovering--October 2003--in the following month."
