BT To Block Child Porn - But Who Makes
The List?

BT To Block Child Porn - But Who Makes
The List?
06/07/2004 02:39 AM
Lots of folks are talking about the decision by BT to b lock access to child porn and how this is the "first mass censorship of the web attempted in a Western democracy." Actually, that's not true at all. Pennsylvania has been forcing ISPs to do this for years. While most of the Guardian article above focuses on how it's now technically feasible to do so, it doesn't really get into the reasons why this is problematic. First, it's unclear who gets to make up the list, and how they decide what's "bad" and what's acceptable. The article mentions a list, but it's not clear that's the list that BT will use - or if there's any kind of appeal procedure for sites that have been unfairly blocked. It's also not clear if (as in Pennsylvania) blocking a site that's on a shared server will mean every other site on that server will also get blocked. The article talks up how this was an idea by NCH, the children's charity who has a habit of putting out very biased and very misleading studies trying to blame child porn on everyone but the people actually creating and hosting the child porn. This is yet another effort by them to try to hide away the problem, rather than dealing with its root causes.

Blog-detectives tackle suspected Mexican
child-porn recruitment site

Eduardo Arcos, editor of the Spanish-language blog ALT1040, is conducting an online investigation into a website suspected of recruiting teenage girls in Mexico for child porn. He's soliciting help from other bloggers, and using the "comment" feature in his blog as a way to exchange info with concerned citizens throughout the blogosphere. Together they're collecting data, with the apparent goal of revealing who's behind the suspect site -- and seeing to it that appropriate action is taken to protect potential victims. Here's my clunky attempt at translating Arcos' summary post:
A site called TV-whores with a theme and intentions that are very clear, contains the following text: Girls from 13 - 19 years of age: earn thousands of pesos simply by taking photographs. More information here. (...)

The page in question offers thousands of pesos to 13-19-year-old girls for taking digital photos. You don't have to be naked, you can be in a bikini or underwear, it says... but it's more than suspicious."

Australia Wants ISPs To Block Porn

Australia Wants ISPs To Block Porn 08/17/2004 01:29 PM
Add some members of the Australian government to the group of politicians who seem to think that secretive filters at the ISP level are the solution to porn. They're recommending that ISPs be responsible for blocking certain hardcore porn. The reason for the recommendation appears to be the realization that regulation isn't working. However, they seem to immediately assume that filtering will work, ignoring plenty of historical evidence that it doesn't. Even worse, filtering at the ISP level has often been shown to block perfectly legitimate sites. Since the details of what sites are being filtered are always kept secret, there's often no way for anyone to know if legitimate sites are included in the block. Those behind this plan claim this plan "is a proposal that has merit because it gets to the problem at the source and it would make it much harder for the industry to duck responsibility." There are plenty of problems with that statement. First, this plan is exactly the opposite of getting at "the source" of the problem. It's clearly focused on getting at the problem in the middle -- the ISP, who has nothing to do with the porn itself. If they really want to get "at the source" of the problem, they should go after those who are putting illegal porn online. Second, to suggest that it's the ISPs' "responsibility" is again backwards. The ISPs are simply a service, and requiring them to set up a system to filter all content through their service isn't a responsibility, it's a pointless burden that will add expense without doing much to stop the real problem. If the government wanted to go after the real source of the problem, they'd go after those truly responsible for the problem -- not the folks in the middle who are simply transporting bits.

USATODAY.com - For years, Congress has sought what amounts to a legislative Holy Grail: A law that would protect children from Internet pornography, stay relevant in the face of evolving technology, and not be too much of a restriction for adults who want to exercise their constitutional right to view sexually explicit materials.

P2P Against Child Porn

P2P Against Child Porn 05/06/2004 01:32 AM
Last year, when other attacks against peer-to-peer file sharing systems weren't working, the entertainment industry pulled out the "porn" card, saying that the file sharing networks were chock full of child porn and it was a danger to anyone using it. Of course, you could say the same thing about the internet, but all the hype even convinced Senator Hatch to push legislation against P2P networks due to all that porn. Realizing that they had something of a PR problem on this issue, it appears the various P2P networks decided to team up and do something to show how they're actually helping to catch child pornographers. They've been working with the FBI to help them track down those responsible for child porn, and are now looking at setting up a system to let users flag child porn so that the networks (and the FBI) can track it down (though, you wonder how quickly that flag will be abused: don't like a song? call it child porn). Finally, in a move that's much more about the good publicity it can generate than actually catching pornographers, they're going to start posting pictures from the FBI's most wanted list of child pornographers on their websites.
