At this year's O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference, there are 27 night sessions reserved from allocation by the organizers, left open to be a "self organizing conference-within-a-conference." The idea is that ETCON attendees propose sessions on the open wiki, and vote on which they'd prefer to attend.

We're not looking for polished presentations. We'd prefer "white board" sessions on your works-in-progess, rough demonstrations with promise, concept and code (with an emphasis on running code, even if it doesn't yet fully represent the concept). You should be prepared to take input, answer questions, engage in discussion, and be open to altering your conceptions and mucking about in your source. Oh, and have a good deal of fun while you're at it.

Well, it was a shame that NordU didn't go off entirely, but at least part of it made it through to the end. Allison and I did our tutorials, to a reasonably full room for these things (19 people, IIRC) which was nice. I'm pretty sure that the talk was a success--at least nobody left, fell asleep, or threw things, three indicators of a successful talk. :) The after-talk get together with cph.pm was really nice. The Copehagen perlmongers are good folks, and it's always nice to spend time with 'em. Copenhagen was really nice, despite the cold, damp wind,...

Reading the notes from the X11 Developer Conference, I can't help but think that the path they're taking is massively over-engineered compared to Quartz Compositor. Sure it's flexible and extensible and backwards-compatible and has no policy, but it's just so big.

Kevin Werbach has wisely chosen the Palace Hotel as the venue for Supernova 2005. This is one of my favorite hotels around - mainly because of the bar - called the Pied Piper - which has an original Maxfield Parrish mural in it.

We went to the Palace for our honeymoon - and had my kids join us. The pool is killer (Esther will like it) and the Sunday brunch world class. But best of all - it's right on Market St. in SF - so I can take the BART to the conference.

Supernova's are usually one of the best shows of the year. See you there.
