Elisabeth Kübler-Ross dies

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross dies 08/27/2004 01:37 PM
I interviewed Dr. Kübler-Ross some time in the mid 1970s for an article for Maclean's in Canada. At the time, she had gone beyond her "five stages of dying" meme and was fully into proving that there's life after death by documenting weird coincidences and poorly substantiated tales. I was disappointed because, although I am agnostic about life after death, her methodology was anecdotal and seemed to me to be aiming at supporting a position she merely wanted to believe. And yet, she did something remarkable. Deeply impressed by her work helping Nazi refugees and by a visit to the...

Küppersbusch Honeycomb Cooking

Küppersbusch Honeycomb Cooking
Tiles
07/21/2004 02:34 PM

ekwe_320.jpg imageAlthough Küppersbusch makes a variety of glass ceramic cooking surfaces, the flush-fitting honeycomb cooktops clearly take the cake. Up to six seperate hexagonal "cooking zones" can be individually operated via a single control panel stone, or can be combined in pairs to form three larger cooking surfaces. Küppersbusch suggests 28 different possible layouts for installing the cooking surfaces, all of which must be integrated in a custom fitting (up to you to provide). Of course, the future of cooking doesn't come cheap -- prices start at $550 per zone, while the control unit will set you back $1,750. (Thanks, JP!)

Judgment bad! Acceptance good! This movie about religious hypocrisy not only thumps us over the head with its kumbaya message, but also gives us Macaulay Culkin as a sex symbol. And that's just wrong.

Can Email Be Saved?

Can Email Be Saved? 04/16/2004 06:32 PM
Infoworld went out and asked six "experts" if they were starting from scratch how they would build an email system to prevent spam - and the answers aren't anything new. They tend to fall into three categories: identify/authenticate users, shift certain functions away from email or sue, sue, sue. Of course, people are trying all these things already and so far... still plenty of spam. Also, in the intro to the article, it says that they asked an "unrepentant spammer" for his take on how to stop spam - but whoever it is, his response doesn't appear in the article. I searched around the InfoWorld site and I can't find it at all. In fact, I hadn't realized just how confusing the InfoWorld site is until now. It's pretty much impossible to find stuff unless something from the outside points you directly in to an article. Perhaps before they save email, they should save their own site. Anyway, if anyone can find the spammer's take, please let us know via the comments so I can adjust this post.

How Linux Saved Microsoft

How Linux Saved Microsoft 04/19/2005 03:45 AM
I've been looking back this week and recalling almost a decade ago when a little company called Netscape prematurely slapped Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) upside the head and by so doing better positioned Microsoft for the future. Granted, I'm sure Microsoft would have loved to avoid the related litigation that continues to this day, but were it not for Netscape, Microsoft would have missed the Internet badly and would have had some much tougher years then they did. As I look at how Microsoft is changing to address the Linux threat, one that may actually turn out to be no more real then Netscape's was, I can't help but see how Microsoft has dramatically benefited from it -- and much more broadly so than they did from the rise of Netscape.

Knoppix Saved My Dad's Data 11/10/2003 11:39 PM
Even before today, I couldn't say enough good things about Knoppix, the coolest run-from-CD Linux Distribution ever. But it gets better. When I got home from flying this evening, there were two messages on my answering machine. Both were my Dad telling me that his work laptop was fubar. He wanted to find a way to backup the data to his Linux box (one that I setup for him as a home server last year--that he doesn't know much about)....
