Rhap sody and Linksys Create Wireless Hub.

This is really something. RealNetworks has partnered with wireless networker Linksys to create a Rhapsody-enabled wireless link. This device connects your stereo to the PC over the home’s 802.11b network, with built-in control of the Rhapsody service for subscribers. Awkwardly, it’s called the Linksys Wireless-B Media Link for Music. Geez, why not the Rhapsody Blaster, or the Celestial Wireless Jukebox?linksys rhapsody wireless
device

Anyway, this device is excellent news for Rhapsody users wishing for a better way to get the music streaming more fluidly throughout the household. Of course, if you’ve got a wireless laptop you can access Rhapsody directly from any room. But getting the music into the stereo system has always been a problem, which the LWBMLM (for short—I’ve typed the hideous name for the last time) solves neatly. And if the stereo isn’t your goal, snap on the bundled speakers, place anywhere in the house, and rock on.

Now, transport a few years to the future. Bandwidth is unlimited; the distinction between downloading and streaming is meaningless; music is a service not a product; and we all pay for access to the global media river at the ISP level. Service-specific devices such as the LWBMLM become relics. Until then, bring it on, Rhapsody. And thank you, RealNetworks, for occasionally releasing a consumer-friendly product.

"Don't do crack; it's a ghetto drug"

"Don't do crack; it's a ghetto drug" 06/19/2004 04:52 PM

Fifteen of us gathered last night for a screening of the 1992 Tim Robbins political satire Bo b Roberts.  This mockumentary of a folksinging conservative Wall Street trader turned politician has held up surprisingly well.  In the background of the movie, President Bush is in the White House and American troops are about to invade Iraq.  Gore Vidal does a great job playing a Ted Kennedy-style career senator.  The songs are fun but sadly the soundtrack has never been made available.

My favorite part of the movie is when Bob Roberts closes a letter to a 7-year-old girl in Vermont with the admonition "Don't do crack; it's a ghetto drug."

This is the perfect movie for an election-year party.

Did you notice when Slashdot's search was down for the past few days? (It's back up now.) Turns out that in a stunning case of irony, it had been hammered into submission by thousands of people attempting to use it. However, unlike CmdrTaco's regimented DDoS attacks, this one is carried out with malicious intent as opposed to mere sociopathic inconsiderateness. It also highlights a potential threat from one of the biggest weblogging services out there.

Hilarious police encounter in Warsaw

Hilarious police encounter in Warsaw 05/22/2004 02:38 AM
Side-splittingly funny account of a Polish expat who returned to Warsaw and got (very incompetently) mugged, then flagged down a vanload of completely bonkers cops who ran around the city, stopping trams and pointing at nuns, businessmen and other improbables and saying, "are these the kids who mugged you?"
Not surprisingly, most people's reaction at seeing a huge police van swerving wildly behind them was to hunker down and gradually go slower and slower. The papers were full of stories about an incident the week before in Poznan, where police had followed a car and then shot the driver dead without warning, only later figuring out that they had staked out the wrong apartment block. Just two days before my adventure, riot police in Lodz had mixed up live ammunition with rubber bullets used for crowd control; they had opened fire into a crowd of students, killing three people. 'Lie low , and hope to God they don't open fire' seemed a prudent strategy, so gradually the traffic around us started to crawl slower and slower.

Fortunately the van was not equipped with any kind of forward-mounted cannon, or Elmer would have surely started blowing little Skodas and Fiats out of the road in frustration. Instead he had to content himself with higher and higher flights of profanity, while the other cops and I held on for dear life. I hoped fervently none of the shotguns were loaded.

Chernobyl survivor interview - Over at the New Scientist site Alexander Yuvchenko (one of the few surviving workers at the site) talks about the day Chernobyl went kablooie. "...we walked outside. What we saw was terrifying. Everything that could be destroyed had been. The entire water coolant system was gone. The right-hand side of the reactor hall had been completely destroyed, and on the left the pipes were just hanging." "From where I stood I could see a huge beam of projected light flooding up into infinity from the reactor. It was like a laser light, caused by the ionisation of the air. It was light-bluish, and it was very beautiful. I watched it for several seconds. If I'd stood there for just a few minutes I would probably have died on the spot..."

Surviving Two Weeks With No Internet

Surviving Two Weeks With No Internet 09/22/2004 04:20 AM
Just how much do you rely on the internet on a daily basis? There are some people who can easily leave the internet completely behind when on vacation. However, what about doing everyday things that you've come to rely on it for? An experiment sponsored by Yahoo had 28 people give up the internet for two weeks to see how they coped. Not everyone took it so well. They increased usage of other media like the telephone, television and movies to replace the missing internet. One couple claims their phone bill tripled. While the lack of email was definitely a nuisance, it was "the little things" that really seemed to get to some. Not being able to get directions online and (the most embarrassing situation, apparently) not knowing how to boil an egg, and having no idea where to go to figure it out seemed to be the biggest problem. Honestly, though, for all the talk about people being "addicted" to the internet, this suggests that's not the case at all for the (small) group of people involved in this experiment. It's just that they find the internet useful in getting random every day tasks done.

Surviving the Political Season

Surviving the Political Season 09/07/2004 02:41 PM
I've been completely frustrated with the level of political discourse this year here in the US. With only two months left in the election, neither candidate has come forward and provided a detailed plan for what they'd like to see happen for the future. "I'll put more money in the pockets of the working family" really isn't helping me make any decisions. However, there are a couple of good sites online that can help you cut through the misleading statements that the candidates are making in their bids to snow their way into office.

In 1932, there were an estimated 150 pinball-machine makers worldwide ... Although sales have remained stable at about 10,000 units a year, the coin-op business has been on a downward trajectory for years. As recently as the early 1990s, the industry churned out more than 100,000 machines annually.
