Open Source Virtual GPS for Wi-Fi
Open Source Virtual GPS for Wi-Fi
05/19/2004 11:46 AMWhile Quarterscope pursues worldwide wardriving to build its virtual
GPS database, the open-source Herecast project expects more grassroots
contributions: A few weeks ago, we wrote about Quarterscope, a company
which combines a database of wardriving-based GPS and Wi-Fi access
point data with live information from a Wi-Fi card to produce a
virtual GPS. Mark Paciga wrote in to point to his nascent effort,
Herecast, which is an open-source project to develop a similar
resource that's a little more open-ended as to goals. It can combine
mapping, location information (you are here/you are near...), and
friend finding. The system doesn't use GPS mapping either on the input
side or output side, but rather tries to use wayfinding through naming
of familiar places in the vicinity. Paciga notes that it only took a
few hours to mock up functional demos. It's available now as a Pocket
PC beta, but he hopes to port it to Windows XP as well....

Succeedhttp://firstmonday.org/issues/issue8_12/ciffolilli/index.html
An open source encyclopedia seems to defy all logic.
Anyone can contribute -- and anyone can change, deface or erase the
information it contains. Yet Wikipedia is successful for several
reasons. First, it's being constructed by a purpose-built virtual
community, whose members share the same goals and passions. Another
factor is the low cost associated with IT and virtual communities. In
a way, technology has virtually eliminated transaction costs for
editing and updating information. This not only stimulates development
of the community and the project, it provides a full exploitation of
massive collaboration economies. Another secret of Wikipedia's success
is its "creative construction" of information, rather than a "creative
destruction" of it. Initially, some observers expected an endless war
among reliable contributions, as well as graffiti attacks that would
deface and delay the development of the Web site. In reality, that
hasn't happened. Every change made to every article is stored;
unapproved modifications can be undone with a single click. Thus,
hackers and graffiti artists waste more of their time and effort
trying to litter a page than administrators require to correct it.
Through this mechanism of editing and undoing meaningless changes or
graffiti, an evolutionary process is fostered. Among other results,
that means only the best contributions survive.

The natural complement to
W3C specifications is running code.
Implementation and testing is an essential part of specification
development and releasing the code promotes exchange of ideas in the
developer community. All W3C software is
Open Source /
Free Software,

compatible. See the
lice
nse for details (and the following if you intend
to contribute). Note that as this license is GPL compatible,
it is possible to redistribute software based on W3C sources under a
GPL license.

03/06/2004 01:59 AMWhenever I mention open source software, or the Linux operating
system, I can be sure of getting lots of "interesting" mail in my
inbox. There's a good bit of confusion about open source software
among members of the general public, journalists of the general press
and even among those of us who should know better.

11/01/2003 05:18 AMAs an occasional user of Linux, and someone in the software industry,
I've followed the "Open Source" movement for quite some time. To a
minority, Open Source Software (specifically GPL licensed Open Source
Software) represents an ideological and sociological movement,
something that will change the world. To the majority, it is simply a
way to get cool and useful software without going through the expense
of buying, or the hassle of pirating it.

04/06/2005 09:22 PMDan Farber reports from the OSBC here in SF and let's us know what
Larry Augustimn said. He's identified specific models and shown
how companies are asking their clients to pay them to convince them to
hire them.
That is so beautiful.
And watch Doc's IT Garage
for more goings on in this area. It's time to cash in and kick
the old school - out. I guess the next scene is Portland Aug. 1-4 at
OSCON.
BTW Dan Farber is one of my favorite peeps.

04/10/2005 07:12 AMFree software and Open Source: The freedom Debate and Its
Consequences By Mathias Klanght
tp://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/klang/index.htmlAbstract:To most outsiders the ethics
of software is not something usually considered. To most proficient
computer users with a passing interest in this question the ethics of
software is recognised as one of the fundamental questions in the
digital rights area. To most of the latter, terms such as free
software, open source, and their derivatives (FLOSS, FOSS, Software
Freedom) are interchangeable. Choosing one over the other is a matter
of taste rather than politics. However, to most insiders the
question is not one of taste. There is a fundamental difference
between the two areas even if they share a similar root. Free software
is not the same as open source. The two groups differ in their
fundamental philosophical approach to software and its importance to
society as a whole. This paper examines the two groups’ differing
philosophies and explores how their actions have affected software
development, access to fundamental software infrastructure, and the
development of the concept of freedom.

the process, I will also show you some of the better locations to

A model for open source software
development
A model for open source software
development
05/25/2004 11:36 AMCritics of open source software have argued that, from an economic
standpoint, "giving the product away" makes no sense. As a new
business model, open source has been the victim of many misconceptions
and mischaracterizations: that it's the equivalent of communism,
that's it's like a virus, and that it's economically dangerous to
society, for example. In such a hostile atmosphere, it's not easy to
objectively assess a new paradigm that differs greatly from the status
quo. However, though a comparable model may not exist in the IT
sector, a parallel working model for open source already exists in at
least one other field, biomedical research, and this model has been
proven to be of great benefit to society.

09/13/2004 08:45 AMHow do you organize all those little notes and ideas that you have
spread out all over the place in a way that you can actually use them
and make have them make some sense? That's one of the goals of a class
of software known as mind mapping. Once the realm only of high-priced
commercial applications, there is now at least one open source option.
It's called FreeMind and it's licensed under the GPL.
