This is how justice works

This is how justice works 01/18/2004 03:49 PM
I've had a wonderful weekend. I've had time to watch four movies from my "DVDs I am going to watch when I retire since I am never going to have the time before that" -collection, I have eaten well, slept - well - sufficiently, and still managed to tick off a few "things to try before you die" -list and move them onto "cool, I'll do that again" -list.

So, however, this evening, at a business dinner (don't ask: I know it's Sunday) I make a complete fool of myself by showing up late (darn). And not only that - my cough which I thought had already vanished, decides to have its encore right at the same moment I have introduced myself and am thirstily sipping from a glass of water. And what an encore it was: in a surprising combination of sight and sound the cough (with a mouthful of water) bursts out, spraying the water across the table, completely surprising everyone. Including me.

The whole table stops, forks suspended midway between plate and mouth, and I feel the cool and curious look of Japanese businessmen fixed on my neck, as I try to hide and escape under the table. "Are you ok?", I hear my boss ask faintly - and I stammer something in reply that nearly, but not quite, sounds like "yes", cheeks burning. Oh well, there goes my professional reputation...

I guess this is how the universe collects its debt on happiness. I recall once, in a shower (I do a lot of my thinking in the shower), I had a wonderful revelation. I don't recall what it was about anymore, but it was a profound thing - enlightenment, you could say - and I was so happy about it that the soap slipped from my hand and fell right into the toilet. So I guess that was the more important lesson to be learned of the two: close the lid before you shower.

Irony. The most common element in the universe. And what a wonderful universe it is! ;-).

'Sting' by vigilante group results in firefighter's arrest: We've mentioned this guys before. Here's their Web site. Looks like they bagged one clean.

An indictment alleges Ryan Hogan, 24, of Massapequa, N.Y., used a firehouse computer to try to entice a woman posing as a 14-year-old girl to have sex with him, and to send her an obscene image of himself.

The girl actually was a member of a group called Perverted Justice, a group that sends volunteers into Internet chat rooms to pose as young teens. When men contact the "teens," the group's Web site posts their sexually explicit conversation and often the men's pictures and phone numbers.

I've read through some of the chat transcripts they've posted. Lemme tell you — they're awfully disturbing to a guy with two daughters.

The only thing more irritating then getting throw in Orkut jail 8 times, is that Joi (who's right on my heels as the #2 Orkut networker) - had NEVER been thrown into jail.

Well it's great to hear that there's justice in the world.

:-)

I' m in Orkut jail.

I was making fun of Marc Canter because he kept on ending up in Orkut jail, but I got this message today when I tried to invite a friend into Orkut.

To keep orkut.com a trusted community, we have implemented an automated system that tries to identify members who may be abusing it. While your account is being reviewed, you will still be able to login, but the system will prevent you from performing any actions such as inviting friends or posting messages.

If your account has been flagged by mistake, we're very sorry. Certain actions can trigger our alarm by accident. If you think you have been mistakenly suspended, please send an email to help+blocked@orkut.com with your username, and we'll review your account as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I haven't invited very many people and have only sent three private messages. I wonder what the triggers are. Maybe approving too many friend request. Hmm...

Justice -- Guantanamo Style

Justice -- Guantanamo Style 08/27/2004 01:28 PM
The USA has been keeping approximately 600 detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has called them "the worst of the worst". Other sources have described them otherwise. Abdurahman Khadr, who the CIA placed, as a mole, within the detainee population, said most of the detainees were innocent, or were merely local Taliban militia-men, with no intelligence value. Well, after no public review of their status, the Guantanamo detainees are finally getting their day in court -- kind of. There are actually three separate kinds of reviews slowly underway.

Is the Department of Justice lying?

Is the Department of Justice lying? 07/01/2004 03:48 PM
Is the U.S. Department of Justice lying about its computer systems in order to avoid living up to the law of the land, or is America really so much at risk that a vital department -- to which the FBI itself reports, and purports to be a major player in the fight against terrorism -- cannot use its computer systems for fear that they will crash and destroy vital data? And why are there no backups?
