comeback

iCommune, software that allow iTunes users to share their music over a network, and software that drew fire from Apple, now uses "a combination of little-known features in iTunes along with code written in AppleScript, the Mac's built-in scripting language." The latest open source release is available from sourceforge.net.

Porn Spam Makes A Comeback For The
Summer

Porn Spam Makes A Comeback For The
Summer
08/17/2004 01:29 PM
Last year at about this time, we noted that porn spam seemed to be on the "decline" relative to "healthcare" (read: Viagra) spam. However, this year, the latest study says that porn spam shot up this summer. Who knew these things were seasonal? Actually, this report claims the same thing happened last summer, which goes against what we reported back then (and, yes, it's the same company's study). The discrepancy in the claims may be due to the difference between relative and absolute numbers. The percent of overall spam that was porn may have declined, while the actual number of porn spam may have increased, since other forms of spam increased at an even faster rate. Honestly, though, at this point, when something like 80% of all email is spam, does it really matter how much is porn vs. gambling vs. phishing vs. drugs?

Can You Classify What Makes Music Good?

Can You Classify What Makes Music Good? 12/11/2003 02:29 PM
About the time I was starting Techdirt, a friend of mine started a company called Mongo Music. I remember getting lunch and hanging out in his living room, which was doubling as his office (surrounded by stacks and stacks of CDs) as he explained the concept. He was going to build up a huge database of music, and use people to define all the various characteristics of the song to identify "that thang" that made music catchy. The idea was that this information was objectively identifiable, and if you liked one song, Mongo's database would point out other songs that matched it on all the characteristics that were measured. It was an interesting idea - but I wasn't convinced "that thang" was objectively identifiable. Microsoft disagreed and eventually bought the company - but never really introduced the service Jeremy described to me in his living room that day. Now, it appears that another startup is trying to do the exact same thing. Soundflavor is tryin g to recommend music based on breaking down each song into more than 700 component parts and having human listeners define each and every one to figure out what makes the song sound the way it does. I'm still not convinced what makes music good can be defined in such a calculated way, but it seems that everyone is trying to figure out the best way to recommend new music to people. Of course, I still stick by what I've said in the past. This isn't a problem that is solved by technology and analysis, but by people. Some of the music I enjoy most was recommended to me by friends who know my tastes and can suggest what they know I'll like. For example, I'm now completely hooked on a CD from a band I'd never heard of two weeks ago. But, over Thanksgiving I saw an old friend, who knows my musical tastes, and as we were driving somewhere said "Hey, check out this CD I got. I know you'll like it." He was right, and the next day I went out and bought the CD myself - and now can't stop listening to it. It's the human connection that made this possible. I should also note, by the way, that the CD cost me about $5 and came with not only the CD but a DVD that includes concert footage, interviews and random extras about the band. Whether done on purpose or not, this band gets it. They're offering you something extra of value for buying the CD.

There are days I think the $WORK_PROJECT is an exercise in extended programming irony. The parrot code my compiler generates for $WORK_LANGUAGE makes heavy use of continuations. Really heavy use of continuations, to the point where reports are taking (and discarding) three continuations per record plus another two or three per page of the output. For a language which doesn't have functions, blocks, or lexical variables, and whose idea of sophisticated control flow is goto or gosub to bare labels. Go figure....

Download audio to your PlayStation

IT Conversations podcast on a PSP

Last week I picked up a new PlayStation Portable (PSP) in the hopes that I could use FeedDemon to download podcasts and other audio files to it. Turns out it's possible, but it wasn't as straightforward as I would've liked.

In my case, I decided to use the PSP's USB connection to copy downloaded audio directly to the PSP's memory stick. Just in case other readers are struggling with this, here's how to do it:

  1. Select "USB Connection" in your PSP's settings and enable the USB mode - this must be done in order for the PSP's memory stick to be mapped to a Windows drive letter
  2. If you haven't done so already, create a folder on the mapped drive named PSP, then create a subfolder of that named Music
  3. Open FeedDemon's FeedStation utility, then click the Options toolbutton and switch to the Podcasting tab
  4. Place a checkmark in "This Folder" to copy downloaded podcasts to a local folder, then enter the path to your PSP's music folder (in my case, this is I:\PSP\Music)
  5. Click OK to save your settings

The next step is to simply use FeedDemon to download your favorite podcasts, then let FeedStation take care of automatically copying them to your PSP.

Note: My PSP came with a feeble 32MB memory stick, which is far too small for storing audio. So if you plan to use your PSP to listen to podcasts, make sure to invest in a much larger memory stick!

After reading a forum post yesterday inquiring about DSL vs. cable download speeds (specifically Cox Cable), I though I’d write about one of OS X’s more underappreciated applications. Let’s face it. If you’re using OS X, you’re using the Internet; and if you’re using the Internet, you’re looking for one thing: speed. For most people, dial-up just doesn’t cut it anymore, and for some, cable speeds still aren’t enough. While Safari and Camino have taken care of many gripes about page...

Orrin Hatch wants to ban P2P networks that are used for music-sharing, claiming that their non-infringing uses are negligible. He even held hearings on his Induce bill to make the point. Video of those hearings are now available on a P2P system called Bittorrent that allows lots of people to simultaneously download large files by portioning out the burden of serving parts of the file to everyone who's trying to get a copy.

Download a copy of the hearings for yourself, participate in the democratic process, and in so doing, prove that their conclusions were utterly bogus. Torrent Link

More about evil-or-not

More about evil-or-not 03/23/2005 08:15 AM

Yesterday, late in the afternoon, I wrote a bit about evil, and how unfortunate it is that this word has entered discourse in the blogosphere. I think we can trace it back to the Google goal of not being evil, an idea that's run its course, and should be stricken from their corporate philosophy. Google is no more or less evil than any other company, has no basis to claim a moral superiority, and should openly cancel it. And if they won't remove the hex, let me offer a new law of the Internet, a corollary to Godwin's Law. "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of it becoming about evil approaches one." And I'd add, that the length of time is shorter, but the effect on discourse is the same. It stops all rational discussion immediately.

Coincidence or contortion? Ivan Panin deciphered a numeric code in the Bible. Known as Gematria, the 'code' implies the Bible could not have been written without Holy assistance. Panin offered an open challenge for someone to create text using a similar pattern, yet no one was able to create one(nor tried).

However many people doubt the authenticity of the code though. The code is found in the same verses using different translations. It is also claimed that Panin manufactured his own translations to create this mathematical phenomenon.

Whether or not you believe, you can determine how good or evil any text or website is.

Google To Start Selling Banner Adverts From the that-didn't-take-too-long-department, Google's ad sales VP Tim Armstrong says Google will now start selling graphical banner adverts. One concession to their old mores is that, for now, the banner adverts will only appear on affiliated websites running their AdSense referral program (as does MeFi), and there is an opt-out. However... "We have no plans to show images on Google.com", said Mr. Armstrong "but we are not opposed to it".
