Cometa: Seattle is a Crucible of Its
Future

Cometa: Seattle is a Crucible of Its
Future
04/21/2004 06:22 PM
Cometa Networks is one of the most talked-about hotspot builders, and the least well understood. Their CEO and their VP of sales and business development talked about the present and future dispelling some of the mystery: In an interview today with Cometa Networks' CEO Gary Weis and vice president Jeff Damir, the two executives provided context for their recent decisions, apparent setbacks, and their future planning. Cometa Networks is a hotspot infrastructure builder, signing contracts with venues to build Wi-Fi network locations that they also provide technical and customer service for, and then resell access to those locations to service providers such as aggregators (like iPass, with which they have a relationship) and cell carriers (such as AT&T Wireless). I've been one of the strongest critics of Cometa's ongoing development in part because of the initial hype (not all theirs) and the ongoing obscurity with which they have proceded. I came away from this interview quite convinced that Cometa's plans are much more in line with how the rest of the industry has matured and the needs of both venue owners with whom they must negotiate and service providers to which they have to sell their offering. If anything, Cometa and Wayport have swapped places: Wayport is aggressively building as many as 17,000 hotspots in the next three years under contract, while Cometa's Weis and Damir said they are looking for the right partners to more cautiously build out a network in which every hotspot has the value that their upstream service provider partners want. Weis joined the firm in March 2003, several months after its public launch. Weis stated at the outset when asked about the previous projections of Cometa's network growth, "I have taken a lot of time to work with the team we built to get it right, if you will, instead of shooting from the hip and talking off the cuff." Even though Cometa started serving McDonald's locations around the time Weis joined the company--as part of the publicity associated with Intel's Centrino rollout--the main thrust of their current approach to which venues to partner with began in June 2003 when the firm decided to start a few months later in Seattle. Weis said that Seattle was selected to "get us more information about what venues are really valuable, not just to our perception but to our service providers' perception." In September, they had 100 locations...

More Santarchy in Antarctica

More Santarchy in Antarctica 12/24/2003 12:14 PM
Somewhere in Antarctica, a woman in a Santa suit is blogging. Alli, aka Sandwichgirl, e-mails BoingBoing with this update on holiday preparations and the spread of Santarchy down south. And by "down south," I mean way, way, way down south. Click thumbnails for larger images.
if there is a god or santa, i must have done something to piss them off in the dish line cause santawich got no love from the health fairy. a week and a half ago, i was told i have a stomach virus. after a very humbling 4 days, a cough that bruised my ribs, a fever of 102, and a vicious lung infection kicked my ass the one week i have been looking forward to since before i came to antarctica.

i have been trapped in my little crap dorm watching no less than 15 movies, wishing, for once, i could be at work. i wanted to be making cookies. i wanted to be slacking off in the name of christmas. i wanted to be taking advantage of all our volunteers. feck. so i stayed in bed the past 4 days. hacking, breathing, sweating, crapping. did i mention the 15 movies i watched? maybe it was more.

today was the first day i emerged since saturday night. i asked medical if icould borrow a wheelchair to make a grand appearance into the galley but they said they needed it for 'real emergencies'. then i asked the firefighters if they could carry me in, but most the firefighters i know were off base on some call. so, i trudged in on my own, clad in santa. it was hilarious, watching santas collect their food from the hot lines, then along table full of santas, eating together in peace and harmony.

after i watched everyone eat (i still have zero appetite), i hung around to watch the community file in and react. it was amusing, but i had to do something less stimulating or perhaps i would die. there were lots of people taking pictures and video. i promise i will report within the next few days. here's a few things. i'm going back to the galley now to see how things are progressing. tonight i want to go out for a little while to get some shots around town. thank you for everything. the galley staff thanks you! -- santawich

(Thanks, David)

Click thumbnail for full-size image. The RSA's David Calkins shares this snapshot of Santarchy mayhem afoot on the ice continent (left), and says:

"Santacon comes to Antarctica! Yeah! There will be a 36-Santa rampage tomorrow and Thursday. I know... Because me 'n' Rob (who founded Santarchy) bought those 36 suits and shipped 'em to my friend Allie, who works at McMurdo (bigdeadplace.com!)."

NASA Tumbleweed Rolls Across Antarctica

NASA Tumbleweed Rolls Across Antarctica 03/06/2004 02:03 AM
The NSF issued a press release yesterday announcing that the NASA Tumbleweed, a two-meter beachball-shaped robot, had completed a 70 km roll across Antarctica's polar plateau. The robot left the NSF Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station on Jan. 24 and made the journey in 8 days propelled by wind at up to 30 kph (average speed was 1.3 kph). The Tumbleweed is a mini test version of an eventual 6 meter robot designed to roll across Mars at 25 kph, bouncing over rocks as large as 1 meter. The robot can with withstand impacts of up to 30 m/sec so no parachute is needed for landing.

The ultimate renewable energy resource - kids. Unlike Monsters inc, who harness the energy of screams, the Playpump (also discussed here) harnesses kids having fun to provide clean water. If they have to cart water, the Q-dr um (also discussed here) is a very simple way to make this chore easier. In this complicated world, the best ideas are still the simple ones. via A Whole Lotta Nothing

Do you block banner ads? 09/18/2004 05:21 PM
We here at MacMerc.com have a love/hate relationship with banner advertisements. On the one hand they are annoying--especially those "Click the monkey and win a prize" ones. But on the other hand, they help us pay our hosting fees.

Quite a while ago, as a public service to our readers, we posted an article on ad blocking and now that sufficient time has passed and our Google AdSense revenues are dwindling, we thought it might be the appropriate time to see if some method of ad blocking as become a standard part of your internet experience.
