Ludicorp, who make the awesome Flickr photo-sharing service, have signed a deal with Feedburner to develop new tools and standards for syndicating photos -- and they've released their first technology, called "splicing." (Disclosure: I am on Ludicorp's advisory board)

Splicing gives people the ability to offer a single RSS feed which contains a chronologically ordered arrangement of their photostream from Flickr and the feed from their existing blog (so you might end up with something like blog post, blog post, photo, photo, photo, blog post, photo, blog post, photo, photo, and so on).

Part of the story is this: photos are a perfect application of RSS. You can stick an html reference to a photo into a feed right now, but our namespace will allow for passing along the social context of the image: the raw pixels have value, but the title, description, comments, tags and notes, along with things like EXIF data add a whole other dimension of value.

With everyone using digital cameras and (now) camera phones, you'd think that the traditional photo print shops would be getting worried. Not necessarily. They're apparently betting that people will be lazy or uninterested in figuring out the details of printing at home, and will still bring in their digital photos to be printed professionally. They may be underestimating the public - and printer companies who are trying to make the process as easy as possible. Also, this might work for some period of time, but as the younger tech savvy generation grows up, they're going to be just fine printing at home.

Recently, due to a combination of very poor user interface, and momentary insanity, while meaning to delete one picture on an almost full flash (SmartMedia) card, I recently deleted all the digital picture files on the card. Once I discovered my mistake, I compounded it by continuing to take photos, assuming that the ones I had deleted were irrecoverable and weren't important anyway. Later that day I was informed in no uncertain terms that the pictures I had deleted were important, and that I should make all efforts possible to recover them. So later that night I sat up with Google and downloaded and tried a number of file recovery programs. A lot of the programs I tried were totally useless. File Scavenger V2, File Recover, Digital Picture Recovery, PC Inspector File Smart Recovery couldn't find any of the deleted files. PC Inspector File Recovery crashed when I ran it. Plus, the people who make the PC Inspector programs started spamming me about their products. I found one that looked promising, PhotoRescue, that showed me thumbnails of the missing photos, and promised that if I bought the program it could recover the full files, or my money back. That seemed reasonable enough and I was prepared to buy it for $29 if none of the others worked. However, the clear winner at photo file recovery was a program called Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery. I downloaded the program, checked it for viruses, ran it, and it recovered my files and put them on my hard disk. It has an exceedingly simple user interface. Somewhat disconcertingly for my geeky soul, there are no options to configure or choices to make. I just started the program, told it where to save the images it recovered, pointed it at the card, and it did its stuff. In my case, it worked flawlessly and recovered 155 images, including 22 files that I had deleted and that other programs said didn't exist. It made someone in my family very happy. Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery is the best program that I have found for recovering photos files deleted from flash cards. As a bonus, it is freeware, released by a Russian programmer as a way of promoting his corporate data recovery software. I hope he succeeds. Very Highly Recommended. It's so slow today that we're reduced to writing about printers. The Samsung SPP-2040 and SPP-2020 are thermal transfer printers that firmly place the Korean giant among such greats as Lexmark and HP. These 1-photo-per-minute printers don't use inkjets. Instead, the heads burn a thin film of color for waterproof and age-proof—call me in 50 years, Samsung, and we'll see how age-proof they are—prints.

They're pricey, at least in the UK, in the $300-$400 range, I'll reckon. And they're shiny and silver. We also didn't write the nasty headline you'll find below. We would have used something much more tasteless.
