Mash is back

Mash is back

Mash is back 10/29/2003 01:15 AM

This MetaFilter thread about someone's version of the game of MASH reminded me of the version that Ben and I whipped together about two years ago.

Because it became pretty popular and because there are a lot of images, the game became a bit of a bandwidth hog and we were constantly going over our transfer allotment. So, I took it down and -- though I promised it would return -- never put it back up.

Well, tonight, after playing around with the game again and thinking it was pretty neat, I decided to bring it back (for the time being). And since, even with a new server, it still be a bit of bandwidth drain, I decided to put up a TypePad ad to at least make good use of any possible traffic it might attract. When we get our overcharge bill at the end of the month, I may at least be able say to say that the endeavor might have possibly brought in a user or two.

Play Mash.

18 Months of Phone Cam Photos

hn_04252004_giant_sheet_web

"With the help of a special query to the hiptop Nation database, I was able to back up over 18 months of moblog posts and phone cam photos to my local hard drive by simply loading everything into a single Netscape window and saving the page....

With all the photos on my local hard drive, I was able to dump them into my iView image catalog utility to create a big thumbnail sheet. You can see the 1200 x 5500 pixel, 1.2 mb image in a pop-up window by clicking on the image above.

Rendered this way, my reaction was that 1715 images didn't look like a lot. Later this year, I'd like to pump another back up of these images into a photomosaic program to generate some Rob Silvers-style artwork." [curiousLee, PubSub: "treo 600"]

Too way cool! I hope TextAmerica picks up on this, lets me create a thumbnail view of pictures on my moblog, and then offers a way for me to print it as a poster, especially incorporating the mosaic idea.

The Mainstream Mash-Up

The Mainstream Mash-Up 12/17/2004 06:34 PM

"The Mainstream Mash-Up" makes it onto the New York Times' list of great ideas of 2004. Question #1: Where is Creative Commons here? Don't they read WIRED at the NYTimes? Question #2: How "mainstream" is a concocted mash-up between Linkin Park + Jay-Z? Hats off to them for innovating, but this is just the tip of the iced-down Rolex.

Watch the Fine Art of Sampling contest, starting here soon, for the real deal.

French DJ/producer duo Loo & Placido tell BoingBoing:
We've been doing bootlegs / mash-ups for a few years now. For the last several months, we've been working with MTV on exclusive bootlegs for a new show called ""MTV MASH" which is broadcast all around Europe 3 times a week. We already made12 tracks for the show so far. If you want to listen to our bootlegs, check out our website, it's still under construction, but there's already a lot of tracks to listen to.
Link to the L&P site. The MTV out-takes you can listen to here are terrific, and if this is what ended up on the cutting room floor -- the show should be amazing. I'm particularly fond of the Missy Elliot meets Green day track "get your green on," as well as the Goldbug meets ODB number "Golden Bastard."

Time To Back Up Your Back Ups

Time To Back Up Your Back Ups 09/01/2004 06:24 AM
Wasn't Jack Valenti just telling us that DVDs last forever? Maybe not. As many people are now learning, digital media has a pretty rapid decay rate. The latest to discover this was a reporter who, five years ago or so, had fallen for that old (har har) "paperless office" gag that has been pulled before. He bought a CD-RW and scanned in all sorts of stuff (including photos and old articles he'd written) -- and then made the fatal mistake: he tossed out the original copies. Glad to have the filing space back, he proceeded to shove the CDs on a shelf somewhere and forget about them for years... until now. Partly out of curiosity, he pulled out these backup CDs, put them in his CD drive and discovered the wonders of Windows error messages. He begins to wonder (uh oh) what will this mean for all the CDs and DVDs he's been paying good money for over the years. It would be nice if he could back them all up, perhaps multiple times to various different storage media, but the entertainment industry isn't real keen on that idea, seeing as they're actively stompin g out those who try to help you save your own digital files.

"Back-to-Iraq" bl0gger is back in Iraq

"Back-to-Iraq" bl0gger is back in Iraq 05/20/2004 05:43 PM
Clive sez: "Chris Allbritton has begun blogging from Iraq. He's the writer who raised $13,000 last year from his blog readers to fund an indie-reporting trip to Iraq during the war. His readers have asked him to go back, and he raised another $11,000 in the last few months. He just arrived in Baghdad, and has begun writing more of his excellent stuff -- slices of everyday life in one of the most fraught places on earth. The first post describes the crazily harrowing landing you have to endure when you fly into Baghdad, as the plane corkscrews down to avoid shoulder-mounted missiles:"
After a normal flight, we went into a tight, corkscrew dive that sent your stomach up into your throat — and in the case of two passengers, out their mouths and into their laps. It’s a vomit-comet experience. But if you like roller coasters in a sealed container where you can’t really see anything, it’s a lot of fun. Just don’t think about the very real threat of shoulder-mounted SAMs.

Can I have my name back - now?

Can I have my name back - now? 04/18/2005 02:53 PM

The greetings and salutations have been pouring in this morning.

DING DONG - the WITCH IS DEAD!

The 17 year nightmare is over.

The rape and pillage is finally complete.

Now what?

Will the new Adobe grok the new paradigm of tools?

Will Rob Burgess ever be able to set foot in Silicon Valley again? Isn't his reign ending on a down note? Kind of pathetic - no? Lost opportunity, drop the ball - all that?

And what of Norm Meyrowitz or David Mendels? Who cares?

I bet Kevin Lynch has a job - he's pretty smart - but the rest of them - lord knows they an teach a class in how NOT to run a software company.

Maybe Mr. Chizen (who once called Acrobat the 'roach motel of standards') - will get a clue.

Either way - I'd sure like the name back.

And I'd take the Director product line off their hands - if they'd like me to. They more or less have abandoned it. In fact they should pay US to do that.

The name Macromedia started as the name of our new 'compound document' architecture we were working on. But they cancelled the project, got rid of most of our programmers and kept the name. Here's the Macromedia story - from their POV.

Anyone remember the dualing patent lawsuits fight? Well I got to testify AGAINST Macromedia - helping out Adobe. I wonder if John Warnock remembers that.

What are the odds that something will now happen - bare to midlin? But I'd be honored to return - to help out my former company.

The previous caretakers were slimeballs - but Adobe has always had a cooler panache. Either way - they had better get ready for some change - cause who designs software to be sold in a box nowadays?

Who designs software that's single user or that doesn't have a built-in community?

Who designs software that's based upon 'patent' protection or which doesn't have an on-line component to it?

Like I said - I'd be honored to help Adobe out - but they'd have to go open source. I've grown at least over the years. But have they?
