An application developer can choose any one of a number of strategies to read and use an XML document. In some very simple examples a script containing a number of regular expressions might do the job, but normally a more rigorous technique is required. The Simple API for XML (SAX) is one of the two key techniques for analysing and processing XML documents (the other is the more complicated Document Object Model (DOM)).

Next-generation e-forms

Next-generation e-forms 01/26/2004 09:11 AM
E-forms, a technology that's been around for a long time, is now a hotbed of activity. Microsoft's XML-oriented InfoPath, which shipped with Office 2003 in October, is now deployed and in use. Adobe plans to ship a beta version of its PDF-and-XML-oriented forms designer in the first quarter of this year. And e-forms veterans such as PureEdge and Cardiff, whose offerings are built on an XML core, are lining up behind XForms, the e-forms standard that became an official W3C recommendation in October 2003. MT Background Processing Limitations

MT Background Processing Limitations 09/07/2004 08:30 AM

One of the cool new things in Movable Type 3.x is that it forks processes to do stuff in the background. For instance, if you save an entry, you don't have to wait for it to rebuild. MT runs the rebuild process in the background, and the entry quietly rebuilds within 30 seconds or so of you saving the entry and returning to the menu screen.

However, this morning I was mass deleting 60+ comment spams (another great new feature: search for comments by IP). MT 3.x is automatically rebuilds the entry when you delete a comment (great improvement, BTW), so 60+ entries were rebuilding at the same time in the background.

Now, we all know that MT isn't terribly efficient with the database calls (doesn't have to be when it's write-one, read-many), so the database must have been getting hammered while these entries were rebuilding.

I made a change to another entry, tried to save it, and got this:

Got an error: Bad ObjectDriver config: Connection error: User [removed]@localhost has already more than 'max_user_connections' active connections

A small price to pay for background processing, but they probably should have trapped the error. Now I'm left wondering how many of my entries actually rebuilt, and how many died in process due to this error. Since they were being rebuilt in the background and thus wouldn't display an errror, I may never know.

The solution: Rebuild All Files. My hosting company must hate me.

Text Processing in Python

Text Processing in Python 10/28/2003 11:06 PM
I'm seeing ever more Python in the social software space. Its suitability to the task of converting napkin pseudocode to equally-readable running code and focus on there simply being at least one reasonable way to do things (as opposed to the Perlish TMTOWTDI) means its often quicker for a social software programmer-to-be to pick up and prototype an idea without all that $_@%# gobbledegook.

/. reviews David Mertz's Text Processing in Python.

"If you have read an introductory book or two about Python programming, but you are far from being an expert, then you will benefit a lot from reading this book. If you are a competent programmer in any other language, you will benefit from this book. If you are an expert Python programmer, you will also benefit from this book."
A Perl hacker myself, I dabbled in Python with the first incarnation of blosxom, the peerkat "personal syndicated data aggregator living on your desktop" back in 2001. While blosxom's come full-circle, sporting all of the ideas and fun(ctionality) of peerkat, it was also a round-trip, programmatically-speaking. I returned to Perl, the language I've come to know and love over the past 7 years. That isn't to say my anal-retentive > 1/2 isn't still drawn to the clean lines of Python. This book's definitely on my wishlist.

A Question on PDF Post Processing

A Question on PDF Post Processing 12/29/2003 11:49 PM

Here's something that's been in the back of my mind for a couple of weeks, but it hasn't been pressing enough to really dig into research. So I'm going to be lazy and throw the question out here.

If you take a document from Word or whatever and convert it to a PDF, Adobe Acrobat can then do some great things with it (and I mean really great things; browse this book sometime, and you'll be amazed at what you can do with Acrobat). You can create hotspots that hyperlink to Web sites, add video, specify articles within larger documents, add bookmarks, etc.

But what happens when you have to change the source document? You make a change in Word, reprint to Acrobat Distiller, and you now have a brand new PDF. You have to do all the post processing all over again.

So, my question is: is there a way to "swap out" the source document from a PDF? How do you avoid having to re-do all the Acrobat enhancements you did post-PDF conversion? Just wondering.
