At CES... Sort Of...
01/09/2004 09:50 PMEarlier this year we had a few articles about the mysterious Phantom
gaming console that many are saying
is just
a big hoax or scam - as there seems to be very little real
information on the thing. Now
TAD writes in to point out that:
"The Phantom console has shown up at
CES, with no games, no screen shots - the reps wouldn't even turn
it on. Just a box with some "ports" on it." Doesn't do much to
inspire confidence.

Longhorn launch date
08/02/2004 12:23 PMMicrosoft's chief financial officer, John Connors, talked up the
"innovative pipeline" that will ensure that new products and
technology keep rolling out through future years.
But "future" was the key word at the annual financial
analyst meeting when it came to the next major version of Windows.
Microsoft did not provide the final ship date for the release of
Longhorn. "We've made really good progress in the last year. The
next milestone for us is getting the beta out sometime next year and
that'll be the point at which the feature set and the schedule will
really be pretty much locked down," said Bill Gates, Microsoft's
chief software architect.
"It's a release that's driven by the breakthrough features, and
we'll have a strong sense of exactly what gets in and what the
schedule looks like as we get that beta out sometime in the next ...
well, next year sometime." Gates did not say the beta would be
released in the first half of next year, as the company had been
saying prior to last week. If the beta should slip to the second half
of the year, that could have a snowballing effect on the final ship
date and potentially push the product beyond the 2006 target that the
company has bandied about.

Phantom pixels in CSS
Phantom pixels in CSS
06/04/2004 02:16 PMLast weekend I helped get a great new FCC policy blog up called Wireless Unleashed. It's a
cool idea about how once regular TV stations go digital, all the
unused stuff above channel 13 could be reallocated as a new free
wireless spectrum, kind of like a super powerful 802.11b.
Anyway, now that the site is up, I can point out a phantom CSS
pixel problem I encountered while doing the layout. I used a basic
three colum CSS layout, with some padding in the main content area. My
favorite hack is that it's got a background image to make the post
area and sidebar fill their space to the bottom (while using an alpha
transparent png that degrades nicely in IE for windows). On this one
page, the design called for full-width banners, so I put some
inline CSS to override the padding in the white area, and to get IE
and moz to display the full width banners I had to resort to an image
replacement hack.
Now, here's the crazy part. The center column isn't fixed width in
CSS even though it's a fixed width layout, and the banners with
people's names on them are the full width of that space. If you look
carefully, you'll see a pixel or two of white space on the right edge
of the banners. In firefox I see one pixel. In IE/Win, I see about 3
px. If you scroll down below the right sidebar to the last banner,
you'll see that it's flush and there's no gap at all. The background
line between white and orange doesn't bend, but the banners don't
appear all the way to the edge when content is on the right. I can't
figure out why, and just gave up on trying.

The Phantom Console
05/11/2004 09:27 AMInfinium Labs sets launch for Phantom console: There's a new
gaming console coming. It's free with a two year subscription to
their gaming service,
The console features a PC-like architecture, with 256 megabytes of
RAM and a 40 gigabyte hard drive, running an embedded version of
Windows XP. It will use a custom controller and support surround sound
and high-definition TV.
But Bachus downplayed the capabilities of the hardware, saying the
real focus was the gaming service. "It's kind of a fool's errand to
try and chase the PC," he said.

This is a shocker: The Phantom Game
Service will be demonstrated at the upcoming CES in the Microsoft
Booth in preperation for going live in 2005. I always assumed that the
Phantom would live up to its name and go down in a flaming streak of
screaming investors. The device will use Windows XP Embedded
technology to deliver games to peoples’ living rooms. Infinium Labs,
the company behind the Phantom, say they’ve got the backing of nearly
two dozen leading game providers.

The Phantom Looking More Real, New
Business Model Still Questionable
The Phantom Looking More Real, New
Business Model Still Questionable
05/10/2004 01:30 PMAs expected, Infinium Labs is using E3 as its coming out party to
prove that they do, in fact, have a product. You may recall this is
the company that has faced
lots of
doubt
a> about whether or not its gaming console really existed. The
company started to look a bit more respectable by hiring a CEO who
helped develop the X-Box, but quickly lost a lot of goodwill by suing
one of the sites that questioned the legitimacy of the company.
Now, they're making a big push to prove that they exist. Wired News
has an article about the company saying that instead of pushing it as
competition to gaming consoles, they're
targeting
"occasional" or "lapsed" gamers and offering the system as a
service. That is, if you agree to pay $30/month for two years you get
the hardware "free" and access to the basic level of downloadable
games they offer. Of course, it's not really free, but the hardware
fee is baked into that monthly fee. Of course, it looks like
they
still don't have any publishers officially signed up. The games
they're displaying at E3 are only for display at E3 and might not
actually be available when the device/service launches in November.
As anyone in the gaming business will tell you, if you don't have good
publishers signed up early, the gaming device will fail. Infinium
seems to believe they'll be able to sign up enough publishers now that
they can demonstrate the device publicly and build some buzz. You'll
also notice that the box looks entirely different than it did just a
few months back when people were doubting that it really existed.
More importantly, you have to wonder about the business model and the
target market. They say they don't want hardcore gamers, because
they'll already have a console and a PC with all the games they want.
However, you have to wonder why the occasional or lapsed gamer wants
to pay $30/month if they don't really play games that often. On top
of this, the games they'll offer at that basic level of service are
older games. As Infinium points out, this may help get publishers on
board by offering them a new revenue stream for old games, but that
also means that your offering users
old games. I guess they're
hoping that these lapsed video gamers won't notice that they're
playing old games, but it doesn't seem like the most compelling pitch
to a lapsed gamer: come back to gaming, but get locked into a two
year, $30/month contract, and we'll let you play a few old games that
you can probably pick up for a couple dollars in the bargain bin!
