We've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright. In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an impact on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset makers to offer multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly) over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will cost lots of money and anger many people.

Yesterday, Dan Bricklin took me camera-shopping at his favorite camera store, Newtonville Camera (in, guess where, Newtonville, MA). My current camera, a Sony DSC-S50 is about 4 years old. It's 2.1 megapixels and only ASA 100. Worse, I've never been impressed by the vividness of the images it takes. So, I'm looking for a camera that I'll use primarily for family photos, almost always for viewing on screen. Chicago plans advanced surveillance: I don't know what's more amazing — that Chicago is going to have a network of 2,000 cameras monitoring their city streets, or that the ACLU didn't flip their lid about it.

The linchpin in the network — paid for with a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and scheduled to be up by March 2006 — is software designed to detect "suspicious" activity.

For instance, if someone left a suitcase in a stairwell, the software would engage any camera within range and alert a worker at the emergency operations center. It would do the same if an individual rushed up to another and dragged him away. A series of cameras could track fleeing criminals, and 911 operators would be able to give police descriptions of suspects.

It looks extremely hokey, but Matsushita Electric Works has announced a new camera with a motion-sensor that will take pictures of your pet, then email them to your mobile phone so you can keep an eye on them. Called the 'Poppot Camera ATR0202W,' it uses a DDI Pocket CF card for some reason (why couldn't they just integrate the electronics?) And while that's all well and good, I don't know that a 0.1-megapixel camera and motion-sensor is worth $110 dollars, especially when a combination of a webcam and some software could probably do almost the same thing for about one-quarter the price.

Ok, so it is basically a large-format film camera, the image only gets to gigapixel size after the film is developed and scanned, and the thing will probably never see mass production, but Clifford Ross' R1 camera is getting plenty of attention in spite of it's decidedly low-tech construction. And it's worth noting that the people who are sitting up to take notice of this camera are scientists from NASA and spooks from the CIA.

The camera uses a 9 x 12 inch piece of high-definition film — ordinarily used for high-altitude reconnoissance photography — which yields a 2.6GB image file. The file has to be color corrected in Photoshop to clean up color abberations that are characteristic to the film (can you imagine how long it takes to apply a change in a file that big?)

The end result is an image that has about a thousand times more detail than a standard digital photo, which NASA engineers think may be able to help them see problems with the Shuttle's heat shielding without the need for the astronauts to do a manual inspection. And who knows what kind of duties the CIA and military types might cook up for it.

There seem to be two opinions when it comes to camera phones: either people think they're going to be the greatest thing since the first internet browser or they're a silly waste-of-time trinket that's only going to make mobile phones (that don't work all that well already) more expensive. As with any such situation where there are extreme viewpoints, it often helps to have someone take a bit more of an objective look at what's really happening in the camera phone space. The summary seems to be that they're coming, no matter what. What people aren't quite as sure about is whether or not people want them. In fact, in areas where camera phones are being offered, there's really not much evidence that they're using them all that much. Also, while much of the push for camera phones has focused on how it will help the carriers by driving more wireless data usage, some providers have said they've seen no evidence to support that. Does this mean the whole camera phone concept is set to come crashing down before it's really begun? It's certainly possible. As with so much in the wireless space, the ridiculous level of hype has a tendency to do more damage than help. However, there are a few reasons why camera phones may work out after all. First off, people aren't buying camera phones for the camera. They're buying them for the phone. The camera just comes along with it. As such, handset makers and wireless carriers don't have to be nearly as concerned about the success of camera phones early on. It's almost a "stealth" way of seeding the market (if you can call this stealth). Next, whether or not users think they'll use camera phones isn't so much of an issue compared to whether or not they actually will use camera phones - and that will depend on the applications. People are going to realize that there are an awful lot of connected cameras out there - and that presents an opportunity. It's not the fact that everyone will have a camera in their hands, but the fact that those cameras are connected that will drive people to start creating applications that take advantage of that - whether for productivity, for safety or for fun. It's those applications that will make the camera phone worth while. I doubt that it will happen nearly as fast as most folks in the industry would like, but I certainly don't think it's the fad that some columnists/analysts are predicting will quickly go away.

World Pinhole Day 2004 is Sunday, 25 April this year. The idea is to have people around the world take a pinhole photograph on that day and submit them. I wasn't interested in making one out of an oatmeal box or buying an expensive wooden model but when I noticed that you can buy body caps with a pinhole for your 35mm camera and an exposure guide I've decided to give it a try. Jarkko laughed at the idea of taking an expensive camera and turning it into a cardboard box. Everyone's a critic. :)

Did Kodak just build 802.1X into a camera? Kodak will release a camera in June that can upload photos via T-Mobile hotspots. The software to enable this uploading isn't due until fall, for some reason. The new Easyshare-One sounds like a combination of Apple iPod Photo, PDA functionality (for wireless and previewing), and digital camera. It comes with a trial for using T-Mobile's service. I'm guessing that this camera's fall software release will leverage the 802.1X authentication that T-Mobile has added to its North American venues. 802.1X is both simple and hard. If Kodak preloads unique accounts, or allows people to set this up through PC or camera back software, there's very little complexity. The 802.1X supplicant in the camera can manage the connection. The camera will retail for $600 plus $100 for the optional Wi-Fi card. Terms of the free trial service and monthly pricing are yet to be determined. It's a direct shot across the bow at cellular operators who are offering poor upload speeds on their high-speed network. Given that T-Mobile has articulated a long delay in their 3G rollout plans and don't want to clog their GPRS networks, this seems like a perfect symbiosis for Kodak and T-Mobile....

Here's something fun to do next time you're at Best Buy or anywhere else that carries PDAs like the Sony PEG-UX50 - work through the menus until you find the pictures taken with the devices built-in camera. Better yet, find the video clips. It's pretty funny to watch clips of people staring at the device with a quizzical, "is this thing on?" look on their faces, especially when they keep moving their heads in closer and closer to the lens. Minutes and minutes of endless fun....
