nigritude ultramarine: A search engine optimization site is
running a contest to see who can get the number one position on Google
in 30 days.
The SEO Challenge will have you vying for the number one
ranking on a specific search term. The term, currently with no Google
results, will be announced May 7th, the day the competition commences.
The term is "nigritude ultramarine" and here's the Google search for it. Winners get an iPod and a flat-panel
monitor.
With any luck, the mere mention of the term in this post will cause
me to win. (But you have to be a Search Guild member — too
bad.)

An interesting contest has just opened for entries, called Fusedspace. "An international
design competition on innovative applications for new technology in
the public domain" is how they describe themselves but keep in mind
the term "public domain" in this case is more specific to public
spaces. The contest is set to give away over 17 thousand Euros in
prize money for the best proposals that meld public spaces,
technology, art, and community. Entry deadline is April 30th.

self-portrait. You don't have to be a professional artist to enter,
but the entries should involve some time and thought, along with a bit
of creativity. The entries must be hand-drawn on paper (pencil, pen,
charcoal, chalk, crayon), then either scanned or photographed and
uploaded to the Hand-drawn self-portrait category in the Spymac
Gallery.
The winner will receive a one year Wheel account and a Spymac T.Shirt.
The contest will be open until July 4th when voting will begin by the
Spymac community.

presented at this year’s OS X conference in October.
If you’re an OS X developer, no matter how small, I encourage
you to enter the contest. It was a great thing for us (NetNewsWire won
last year in the first contest)—and it would have been a good
learning experience even had we not won, since in entering we had to
write about our application succinctly and describe why anyone would
be interested in it. (Which is a valuable thing to be able to do.)

06/14/2004 02:18 AMFirst off, let me just say I got a ton of response to my gmail
photo invites thing and among the entries I got far too many good ones
to pick just a few. I actually used gmail's built-in tools to track
everything. By labeling all incoming entries, I can see in one click
that 118 people sent a photo link in. Of those, I put a star next to
36 I liked on first view. Of those, I narrowed them down to 31. Among
those 31, there was something compelling about the colors, lighting,
and/or subject matter and any one of ten could have had the top spots.
I'm going with my gut reaction on first viewing but here are the three
winning entries:

It was really hard to pick the top three, as any one of these could
have also been there. If I had more invites to give out, I would have
thrown them all into this list, in no particular order:

I learned some things in this experiment. The biggest one is that
when I said "send in your best photo" I figured that meant the best
composition with the best lighting and most technically superior
image. What most people sent was their finest memory captured on film,
regardless of photo quality. It was eye-opening to me, and told me a
lot about over a hundred strangers. I got to see many, many photos
from vacations and untold numbers of sunsets. It's a fantastic way to
experience meaningful moments in peoples' lives, by seeing these
photos. I've been getting way too far into the technical side of
photography for the last year or two and forgot that photography is
first and foremost a way to record memories.
Overall, I got to see (and share here) many wonderful photos and
memories from those that sent them in. I wish I had more invites to
give and thank everyone for participating.

The Fine Art of Sampling Contest, builds off November's release of the
THE WIRED CD: Rip. Sample.
Mash. Share., which contains sixteen tracks licensed under
Creative Commons Sampling licenses. The licenses allow you to sample
the tracks into your own musical creations, without legal hassle.
To demonstrate how easily songs can be sampled, mashed, and shared, we
built a new site/application called CC Mixter, thanks in part to the
work of veteran music mixer, Victor Stone, and WebJay creator, Lucas Gonze. CC Mixter
has all the WIRED CD tracks
plus loops from
each song. And when you upload your own mashup, the site is able to
track connections between songs, so you can quickly see everyone that
used that same sample in their own work, and everyone that cut up one
of the WIRED CD songs.
The site also lets you connect to other people -- say for example,
find me all the musicians who like jazz music, you can review tracks,
and there's a forum to post questions and comments. We're also happy
to announce we're getting the CC Mixter software ready to release as
open source software, so that anyone can build their own related
community around any kind of content, be that video, fan fiction,
educational materials, or whatever you want.
