cluing into this. Do the people that are sitting there in airports

06/07/2004 10:25 AMThe Royal Bank of Canada is still trying to
sort out the mess from last week when
their computer "upgrade" appears to have stopped processing
transactions, meaning that money that should have gone into accounts

won't explain exactly what went wrong, though they admit that's
because everyone who understands it has been busy working on the fix.
Still, this does make you pause and wonder about how much we rely on
computer systems to function properly to go about our daily lives.

Cablevision Gets A Clue, Gives VoIP Away
06/21/2004 01:51 PMLast month, when writing about how the cable companies were moving big
time into VoIP, we thought the smartest thing they could do was to
drop
the price on VoIP drastically and bundle it with other options.
This way, they'd get customers using all three elements of the triple
play (voice, video and data) when studies have shown that for each
additional element in the bundle that customers have, customer churn
gets cut down significantly. This makes sense, because having to
change all three pieces may seem like a lot more of a pain than just
switching one. The other benefit to drastically cutting VoIP prices
is that it would hit the phone companies (the cable co's main
competitors) right where it hurt the most -- the cash cow business
they've been relying on to keep them going. Now, Cablevision is
following that plan perfectly. They're
offering a triple play bundle that includes free
VoIP for the first year (that is, it's the same price as if you
just got cable TV and broadband internet access from them). This is a
bit surprising, as it seemed likely the cable companies would try to
squeeze every last penny out of any offering, rather than realizing
the competitive situation. It appears Cablevision does understand the
situation -- though, it may not last long if
worried analysts keep complaining and someone gets the idea that
this is unfair competition. However, analysts who think that a price
war will be avoided aren't really paying attention.
Proxim's Loss May be Industry Loss
Proxim's Loss May be Industry Loss
09/23/2004 01:03 PMProxim lost a legal battle with Symbol and the result may be that
Wi-Fi vendors will be required to pay license royalties to Symbol:
Proxim had to pony up $23 million in damages and must pay two percent
royalties, though every other vendor is on the hook for six percent.
The question will be whether Symbol decides to chase down everyone
else. Symbol claims that some vendors are already paying the royalties
but it wouldn't name which. As Peter Judge points out in an email to
Wi-Fi Networking News, it will be interesting to watch if Symbol
approaches Cisco and how that interaction plays out. Cisco, with its
deep pockets, could afford to fight a legal battle that argues against
the recent ruling in Symbol's favor. Proxim basically said it gave in
because it would have had to post a bond for a large part of the $26
million if it continued the fight and the company didn't want that
hanging over its head. In just about any situation, licensing can be
sticky. On one hand, companies should benefit if everyone else uses
technology that they develop. But one of the reasons that Wi-Fi has
taken off so quickly and so widely is because the cost of products
dropped so dramatically. If vendors had to pay licenses on many
different components of a product, the price would have to rise which
at some point slows down growth. We'll just have to wait and see if
Symbol does chase everyone down and if so, what affect the six percent
will have on vendors....

Colour Schemes
05/14/2004 03:13 PMA designer's 'style' is made up of a number of
different factors, though colour plays a large role. Everyone has
their own method of coming up with a good colour scheme, which will
inevitably affect the results.
Technical
A 'technical' method of colour-selection involves choosing one or
two dominant colours from the colour wheel, to be used with a small
set of complementary colours. Basic
colour theory concepts like split complementary and triadic colour
schemes offer a wide range of variation, particularly when you start
throwing in shades, tints, and saturation adjustments.
Pro: An easy way to start with good, workable
colour. Con: being too technical can lead to dull and
uninspired colour choice.
Matching
Matching involves starting with an image or an object (usually a
photograph) and picking colours from within to generate a colour
scheme. Boxes and Arrows ran a great article a while ago about selecting colours from
nature.
Pro: Naturalistic, familiar-feeling colour schemes
that appeal. Con: it's easy to select the
wrong colours from a photo.
Intuition
Probably my most frequently-used method. I begin with a blank
canvas and fill it with whatever colours seem appropriate. Naturally
my mind computes the corresponding compliementary and similar colours
on the fly, but now and then I'll ignore solid colour theory just to
see where it gets me. Hence this site's colour scheme, among
others.
Pro: Fresh and surprising colour schemes.
Con: dangerous without a solid knowledge of colour
theory. Dangerous even with.
These are a few of my own methods, and what influences my design
sensibility. Others will differ, of course. Tell me about your own
methods, comments are open.

Don't Worry, Many In China Have No Clue
What IPv9 Is Either
07/06/2004 12:15 PMLast week, a variety of stories started appearing suggesting that
China was adopting a new internet protocol standard called IPv9.
While many in the press just went with the report, just about everyone
who knew anything about this were left scratching their heads
wondering just what the hell IPv9 was. It wouldn't be the first time
China decided to "go it alone" when it came to internet standards.
Recently there was a big international and diplomatic stink over
China's decision to use their very own, completely incompatible
WiFi
standard that had many WiFi equipment providers threatening to
completely ignore the huge Chinese market out of fear for their
intellectual property (which they would need to share with a Chinese
"partner" to help them build WAPI-compliant equipment). China is also
trying (with questionable success) to
go it alone
with their own 3G wireless standard, while the rest of the world
follows one of two standard upgrade paths. So, when the whole
concept of IPv9 started making news, it was easy to assume that
perhaps China had done it again. However, now reports are coming out
that, even in China,
ma
ny have no idea about IPv9 and suggest that it's really just a
concept being
pushed by one research group in China, rather
than any real adopted standard at this point.

Origin of colour-trends
Origin of colour-trends
07/14/2004 03:38 PMTeresa Nielsen Hayden has written an amazing, heavily linked,
well-researched piece on the Color Marketing Group, a trade
association that determines each season's "in" colours and dictates
the national pallette.
I knew what was up with the big khaki push. Remember that one? Ads
everywhere saying "Hemingway wore khaki"? We'd all been wearing black
for several years. We had black levis, good black skirts, black
leather or denim jackets, little black dresses—a great installed
user base of basic black clothing, plus the colored stuff we wore with
it. I hadn't heard anyone sighing for the return of khaki, and if I
had, I'd have pointed them to one of the WASP mail-order catalogues.
What's the big deal with khaki? It gets dirty too easily, and for a
lot of people it's an unbecoming color. But there's only so much new
black clothing you can sell a happy consumer who already has a closet
full of black-and-coordinates; so the clothing industry pushed khaki
remorselessly.
