08/12/2004 01:09 PMMy latest article for TheFeature is about an audio algorithm that
battles cell phone background noise:
My friends seem to spend an inordinate amount of time
inside wind tunnels, aboard locomotives, and underwater. At least,
that's what it sounds like when they call me from their cell phones.
Blame it on the background noise. Unlike calling from home or a
telephone booth, we have little control over the noise pollution that
surrounds us out there. It's sort of like extra baggage that our voice
is forced to carry when it travels across the wireless ether. Now
though, researchers at the University of Toronto have developed a
novel bit of technology that may someday alleviate us of the audio
aggravation.

Verizon, Cingular and Sprint have entered into an agreement with 32
states to provide full disclosure of service contract rates and
conditions. Also included in the agreement is a clause for more
detailed coverage maps to consumers and a two-week grace period for
new customers to terminate service without penalty. You know, when I
first read this I actually stood up and applauded….

You know how sometimes when you're angry at someone, you write a
letter that you don't send just because writing it feels good? That's
what I do when I get frustrated at what I'm hearing from politicians,
except it comes out not as a letter but as a speech in the bombastic
rhetorical style typical of candidates. This is what I wrote last
night......

Digital Rights Management (DRM)is a tool that doesn't reflect the
general preference of legal music downloaders. Before you read on,
hoping that I will advocate for the free distribution of music, let me
warn you: I'm a strong supporter of copyright and the protection of
intellectual property; I want artists and distributors to make a
decent living, but I'm frustrated by the current misuse of digital
technology that attempts to thwart illegal distribution. In practice,
DRM makes creates compatibility problems that make it excessively
difficult, and in most cases, impossible, to listen to music that has
been purchased online.

Let's hear it for the al-Mahdi Army!!
04/09/2004 03:55 PMI was watching the news last night, and among the usual vagueness of
"insurgents" and "attacks on coalition forces" was some footage of a
march by the al-Mahdi Militia. This is apparently some group of
supporters of the Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. The footage itself
was pretty impressive: thousands of men marchin in black, pressed
military uniforms. They were apparently unarmed, but the march took
them through streets lined with buildings on which they had placed
their own snipers, and past a reviewing stand of Shi'ite clerics.

session led to an audition on Friday for the

In this entry, I talk about the difference between on-camera and voice

announce some pretty cool writing opportunities that have come my way
recently.

ABC's
"After School Specials" will be released on DVD (in DVD

at least four more will follow. TV Shows on DVD has the names of many

Jump

two), she jumps out the window. Those were the days.

Robots that Hear Through Noise
Robots that Hear Through Noise
06/24/2005 09:05 PMRoland Piquepaille writes,
"The Japanese Humanoid Robotics Project
has produced the HRP-2 robot,
which is known for dancing and preserving
Japanese culture. But now, the HRP-2, which is about 1.6 meter high
and
weighs about 60 kilograms, can hear humans and understand them with
its
sophisticated software and hearing equipment. It uses an array of
microphones consisting of eight omnidirectional microphones mounted
around the robot's head. Stable speech
recognition is obtained by combining information from the microphone
array and a camera also mounted on its head, and by isolating and
eliminating noises, even from your TV. These hearing capabilities are
essential "for helping humans to communicate with robots in real
environments by 2025." For more details and photos see Roland's
blog. Also,
see our previous story on the HRP-2 robot's dancing
abilities.

Why the Supreme Court will hear Grokster
Why the Supreme Court will hear Grokster
08/22/2004 07:30 AMCory Doctorow: Over on Lessig's blog, Tim Wu has
enumerated 10 reasons that the Supreme Court is likely to hear the
Grokster case:
1. These is a stated legal conflict on the Sony standard as between
the 7th and 9th Circuits;
2. The 7th and 9th Circuits disagree (albeit in partially in dicta) on
the relevance of willful blindness to secondary liability;
4. The Court has these matters in hand: it has granted cert. in many
similar cases historically (Sony, 1980s, White-Smith (the Piano Roll
case) 1909, Teleprompter and Fortnightly (Cable / Broadcast, 1960s &
1970s);
5. The Court has a vague sense that some far-out stuff is going on in
the field of “Computer Law” that maybe it should check
out;
6. Law clerks use KaZaA & BitTorrent to plan basketball games;
7. Stevens and Breyer deeply dig this stuff;
8. Scalia likes anything having to do with property;
9. Souter got his first computer last week.
And most importantly,
10. The Court loves to be the center of attention, and this would make
it so.
