Do We Want Spam Software That Fights
Back?
11/04/2003 01:20 PM
It's no secret that spammers are increasingly using dirty tricks to continue the spread of spam - while also doing their best to annoy anti-spam activists. They've been launching denial of service attacks on just about all anti-spam sites, and recently tricked a registrar into taking away SpamCop's domain name. Some in the anti-spam world are sinking lower themselves and looking at ways to fight back by issuing automatic denial of service attacks against links in spam messages. There are a number of obvious problems with such a plan. First of all, it's illegal. More importantly, though, many anti-spam offerings have been shown to be a little too quick on the trigger, leading to many legitimate messages getting tagged as spam - and folks being hosted on the same servers often found their own email blocked. What happens when a denial of service attack hits one of those servers? Even worse, the spammers will begin to look on this as a tool to do denial of service attacks on their own. They no longer need to infect machines with trojans. Just spam the website they want attacked and the anti-spam tools will do the work for them.

What's impressive is that an algorithm named Chung-Kwei (after a feng-shui talisman that protects the home against evil spirits) can catch nearly 97 per cent of spam. What's even more surprising is it wasn't developed for fighting unsolicited email -- it was created to analyze DNA and amino acid sequences for recurring patterns, which often indicate genetic structures that have an important role.

Chung-Kwei is based on the Teiresias algorithm, developed by the bioinformatics research group at IBM's Thomas J Watson Research Center in New York, US. Instead of chains of characters representing DNA sequences, the research group fed the algorithm 65,000 examples of known spam. Each email was treated as a long, DNA-like chain of characters. Teiresias identified six million recurring patterns in this collection, such as "Viagra".

IBM intends to include Chung-Kwei in its commercial product, SpamGuru. Justin Mason, who developed SpamAssassin, one of the most popular open-source anti-spam filters, says that Chung-Kwei looks promising.

"I think there is still a lot of work to be done. But what is exciting is not the particular algorithm, but the fact that IBM has shown there is the entire field of bioinformatics techniques to explore in the fight against spam."

Microsoft Fights For Browser Plug-Ins 06/09/2004 08:46 AM
Microsoft fired another shot in its defense of the patent infringement suit brought by Eolas Technologies, asking the U.S. District Court to overturn a Federal Court ruling. Microsoft has lost twice in the suit, once in a jury trial and once on appeal. Now, it's asked the U.S. District court to overturn the $521 million judgment and injunction against distribution of its Internet Explorer browser. Eolas, a spin-off from the University of California, sued Microsoft in February, 1999 for patent infringement related to the way the Internet Explorer browser handles media and plug-ins within Web pages.

Microsoft is taking steps to stop its leaked Windows source code spreading widely on the internet. It is using the messaging systems in file-swapping networks to alert people sharing the code that what they are doing is illegal. The software giant said it had written to "some" of the people it had identified as sharing the source code. Anyone searching for the source code on file-sharing systems will see a pop-up message alerting them to the fact that downloading the code is illegal.

Can Spam Save the World? 04/20/2004 06:06 PM
Can Spam Save the World? Mark Cuban, broadcast.com billionaire, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, and Donald Trump wannabe (though he says he's not) is set to host a new "reality" show called The Benefactor. The winner gets $1 million bucks. This guy, who bought the terribly optimistic cubansmillion.com domain, claims he has a "well thought-out" 4-step plan to use the money to save the world. It sounds to me like it was conceived by the underwear gnomes. He fails to explain just how sending 50 million spam emails a day "generates 250 million dollars annually for charitable causes . ($5 in annual earnings per member enrolled.)" I'd be interested in hearing what others with experience in email marketing think. A viable idea or just crackpot self-promotion?

Dan Farber reports from the OSBC here in SF and let's us know what Larry Augustimn said. He's identified specific models and shown how companies are asking their clients to pay them to convince them to hire them.

That is so beautiful.

And watch Doc's IT Garage for more goings on in this area. It's time to cash in and kick the old school - out. I guess the next scene is Portland Aug. 1-4 at OSCON.

BTW Dan Farber is one of my favorite peeps.
